To print a website image as a large poster on ordinary paper, open the image by itself, save it as a PDF, then use Adobe Acrobat or Reader’s Print > Poster option to tile it across sheets. Set the tile scale and overlap, check the preview, and turn off any extra “Fit” or “Shrink” scaling in the printer dialog. The exact sheet count depends on the image, paper, margins, and scale.

Why printing the image by itself matters

Printing a web page normally prints the page layout: menus, surrounding text, ads, and responsive page elements may affect what fits on the paper. To make a poster from one picture, first isolate the picture and create a stable file that a print program can divide into tiles.

Open the image in Firefox

  1. Right-click the image on the website and choose Open Image in New Tab. If it is a page background rather than a regular image, use View Background Image if that option is available.
  2. Check that the new tab shows the image itself, not the website around it. If the result is a thumbnail or an unexpected crop, return to the page and try the full-size image or another available image link.
  3. Use Firefox’s print workflow to save the isolated image as a PDF. In the print dialog, check paper size, orientation, and scale before saving. Firefox’s More settings also exposes controls such as margins, pages per sheet, and background printing; labels and availability can vary by release and operating system.

Saving to PDF makes a fixed document for the tiling step. It does not make the image higher resolution, and it does not guarantee that the original website served the full-resolution version. Zoom in or inspect the source image before printing if fine detail matters.

Tile the PDF across regular paper

Choose Poster in Acrobat

  1. Open the saved PDF in Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader and select Print.
  2. In Page Sizing & Handling, choose Poster. Acrobat’s Poster mode splits a large document page across multiple sheets.
  3. Set Tile Scale to control the finished size. A higher percentage enlarges the source page and usually increases the number of sheets; a lower percentage reduces the poster and sheet count.
  4. Set an Overlap so adjacent tiles share a strip of image. That repeated area gives you room to align the pages and helps accommodate printer margins.
  5. When available, enable Cut marks and Labels. Cut marks indicate where to trim; labels help identify tile order.
  6. Review the preview before printing. Confirm orientation, paper size, tile count, and that no important part of the image is clipped.

Adobe’s menu wording can differ between versions. Look for the Poster tiling mode under the page sizing or handling controls, and trust the preview over assumptions about a particular dialog layout.

Understand scale and sheet count

Tile Scale is a percentage of the PDF page’s size, not a promise that the printer will put ink to the exact edge of every sheet. At 100%, Acrobat tiles the page at its source-page size. If the source PDF page is already a particular size, 100% preserves that page’s intended dimensions; it does not necessarily enlarge a small image to poster size. To enlarge, raise the Tile Scale deliberately and inspect the resulting layout.

There is no universal number of sheets for a given picture. The count depends on the PDF page dimensions, chosen paper size and orientation, printer margins, overlap, and tile scale. Let Acrobat calculate the layout for the actual file. If you have a target poster width and height, decide those first, then adjust scale until the preview’s tile layout is practical. Record the selected scale and dimensions so you can reproduce the result.

Set overlap and assembly aids

A modest overlap is usually easier to assemble than edges that must meet exactly. Too little overlap makes alignment unforgiving; too much wastes paper and can make seams more obvious. Cut marks help you trim one edge of adjoining sheets while retaining the overlap on the opposite edge. Labels are useful when the image spans several rows and columns. The preview should show the page order and the repeated area before you commit to printing.

Print without accidental resizing

There are two places that can scale the job: Acrobat’s Tile Scale and the printer driver’s own scaling setting. If the driver applies “Fit,” “Shrink,” or a similar option after Acrobat has tiled the PDF, the printed tiles can be smaller than the preview’s intended scale. For a controlled result, set the driver to actual size or 100% where available, and use Acrobat’s Tile Scale for the poster dimensions.

Consumer desktop printers have nonprinting regions near the edges; Microsoft notes that all desktop printers have such a region. This is one reason overlap and careful trimming matter. A printer that supports borderless printing may reduce the unprinted border, but do not assume it can print every paper type or size borderlessly. Check the printer’s own options and use the Acrobat preview to judge the layout.

Assemble the printed tiles

  1. Lay the pages out in the row-and-column order shown by the labels or preview. Keep the image facing up while you verify the sequence.
  2. Trim only the edges needed to make the seams clean. Where two tiles overlap, remove the margin from one tile, not both, so there is image area to align against.
  3. Align the repeated image in the overlap, checking distinctive lines or shapes across the seam before joining the sheets.
  4. Tape the joined pages from the back. Removable tape can make repositioning easier during alignment; avoid pulling the paper out of shape as you work.

For a large or valuable print, make a small test run first. It can reveal unexpected driver scaling, an unsuitable paper orientation, or a crop before you use a full set of sheets.

If you need a clean capture of a webpage before making a PDF, ScreenshotNeo can return a website screenshot by API; it is not the tiling or physical printing step, so use the PDF-and-Poster workflow above afterward. Its consent-banner, newsletter-popup, and chat-widget removal runs before capture and can be turned off; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. It also has an MCP server with screenshot tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. See the API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Replace the example URL with the page you need and save the returned image, then make a PDF and tile that PDF in Acrobat. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Troubleshooting

The printout shows the whole website instead of the image

Go back to the browser and open the image itself in a new tab, rather than printing the page. Confirm that the tab contains only the image before saving to PDF. A responsive page may display a different crop or size than the image file, so check what is actually open.

The poster is smaller than expected

Check both Acrobat’s Tile Scale and the printer driver’s scale setting. Choose the intended Tile Scale in Acrobat and disable any additional fit-to-page or shrink option in the driver. If the source PDF page itself is smaller than expected, a 100% tile setting will preserve that smaller source page rather than create a larger poster.

Parts of the image are missing

Inspect the Acrobat preview for orientation, page size, and clipping. If the PDF was created from the web page rather than the isolated image, remake it from the image tab. Also check that the PDF page is oriented to fit the image and that the print layout includes all the tiles.

There is a white strip at a seam

Desktop printers cannot print to every edge. Use an overlap, enable cut marks where available, and trim one adjoining edge so the image can be aligned across the seam. A driver’s borderless option may help on supported paper and printer combinations, but availability is device-specific.

The preview has an unexpected number of pages

Tile count changes with scale, overlap, page orientation, paper dimensions, and printable margins. Recheck those settings in the preview rather than relying on a page-count estimate from another image or printer.

The menus do not match these names

Acrobat, Firefox, and printer-driver labels can differ by software release and operating system. In Acrobat, locate the Poster concept under page sizing and handling; in Firefox, use the print controls to save the image as a PDF. Use the preview to verify the outcome before printing.

When home tiling is not the right choice

Home tiling uses ordinary paper and requires trimming and joining, so seams are part of the finished result. If you need one uninterrupted sheet, do not have a printer that supports the required paper size, or need a polished large-format output, a print shop may be a better fit. Ask for the final dimensions and file requirements before ordering; the best source file and PDF settings depend on the printer’s specifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I print a website image across pages without Adobe Acrobat?

The steps here use Acrobat’s Poster mode because it provides tile-scale and assembly controls. Other PDF readers or poster-printing utilities may offer similar tiling, but their controls and availability vary; check their preview and scaling options before printing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will tiling improve a blurry or low-resolution image?

No. Tiling spreads the existing image over more sheets; it does not add source detail. A small or compressed image may look soft when enlarged.
