To generate a website screenshot request URL, put the page you want to capture in the url query parameter of a screenshot service’s documented endpoint, then encode the page URL as a single query-parameter value. A screenshot URL is usually a request to a rendering service, not the address of the page’s eventual image. - Outer URL: the screenshot service’s API endpoint and its request parameters.
- Nested target URL: the absolute web address the service should load, passed as the value of a parameter such as
url.
For example, a conceptual request might look like https://service.example/shot?url=https%3A%2F%2Fexample.org%2Farticle. The domain and path here are illustrative only. Use the endpoint and parameter names in the specific provider’s documentation; there is no universal screenshot API URL.

Generate a request URL safely
1. Choose an endpoint and check its contract
Start with the provider’s documentation. Confirm the exact endpoint, whether it accepts GET, POST, or both, where authentication belongs, which capture controls it supports, and what successful responses contain. For instance, ScreenshotEngine’s parameter reference documents GET query parameters and POST with a JSON body; its GET method requires an API-key parameter, while its POST method uses a Bearer API key. Site-Shot’s API page documents an endpoint with a target url and API key. Those details apply to those providers, not every service.
2. Supply an absolute target URL
Use the full page address, including https:// or http://. ScreenshotEngine specifies an absolute, publicly reachable HTTP or HTTPS URL. A local path such as /products is not enough: the renderer needs a complete address it can reach.
3. Encode the target as one query value
A target URL can itself contain a query string, such as https://example.org/search?q=blue&sort=new. If you paste it unencoded into the outer request, its & may be interpreted as the start of another screenshot-service parameter, while reserved characters can change how the request is parsed. Encode the nested URL as a single value. The Site-Shot documentation identifies its target as URL-encoded, and ScreenshotAPI’s render documentation illustrates percent-encoding in a target URL value.
Prefer a query-parameter builder in your programming language or a command such as curl --data-urlencode. These handle characters such as ?, &, spaces, and fragments more reliably than manual substitutions. Do not encode the entire outer request; encode the target URL value as required by the client or tool you use.
4. Add only documented options
Depending on the provider, optional parameters may control output format, viewport width and height, full-page capture, a CSS selector, dark mode or device emulation, and how long the renderer waits. Names, allowed values, defaults, and support for GET or POST vary. Do not copy a parameter from one API’s example into another API’s request unless the second provider documents it.

5. Treat credentials as secrets
Some GET APIs put an API key in the query string. Query strings can be exposed in application logs, browser history, monitoring systems, and shared links, so do not publish a live credential or embed it in a public webpage. If the provider supports a POST body or authorization header, use the documented method that better fits your application’s secret-handling needs. POST does not eliminate the need to protect credentials.

A URL that triggers a screenshot is not automatically a durable, shareable image address. The service may return file bytes directly, JSON containing encoded image data and metadata, or another response type. - The service says the target URL is invalid. Supply a fully qualified HTTP or HTTPS address, not a relative path. Confirm the URL is publicly reachable from the renderer, as required by ScreenshotEngine’s documentation.
- The captured page is wrong or a query parameter seems missing. Encode the nested target URL as one outer query value. Build parameters with a client library or use
curl --data-urlencode; check that the target’s own&characters were not parsed as screenshot options. - Authentication fails. Verify whether the chosen method expects a query parameter, Bearer authorization, or another documented mechanism. - A key appears in logs or a shared URL. Treat query-string credentials as exposed wherever the complete request URL is recorded. Rotate a leaked key and, where supported, move authentication to a protected header or POST flow.

Screenshot rendering involves loading a page and waiting for a capture condition, so response time can vary with the page, network, and selected wait behavior. A longer wait may allow more dynamic content to appear but can also extend the request; a short wait may capture before the page is ready. Use a selector or network-idle condition when the provider supports it and the page’s behavior makes that a better fit than a blind fixed delay.

Often, if the provider uses GET and the request includes all required parameters. Whether the browser displays an image, downloads a file, or shows JSON depends on the endpoint’s response contract and authentication requirements.
Can I use a screenshot URL directly in an HTML image tag?
Only if the endpoint returns an image in a way the browser can load and the request can be authenticated safely. A service that requires a secret query parameter or returns JSON may need a server-side request or a documented signed image link instead.
Should I use GET or POST?
