Start by confirming that your account, purpose, and data source are permitted under the current Instagram terms and Meta developer documentation. For many projects, the compliant path is an export supplied by the account owner or an approved API product—not bypassing a login, CAPTCHA, rate limit, or other platform control.
What “scrape Instagram” means
Meta describes scraping as automated collection of data from a website or interface designed for people. That description covers both authorized and unauthorized activity. A script that processes an export you were given is automated collection; so is a program that repeatedly loads public pages. The technical method does not decide whether the activity is allowed.
Authorization is the dividing line
The Instagram Terms reproduction surfaced for this topic says unauthorized access or collection, including automated collection without express permission, is prohibited. Because that copy is archived, check the current official terms before relying on its exact wording. Meta also describes rate limits as one of the measures it uses to make unauthorized scraping harder. No stable Instagram-specific numeric limit is established here, so do not build a workflow around a quoted requests-per-minute figure.
Public visibility is not permission to reuse
A page being viewable in a browser does not automatically authorize automated collection, storage, or republication. Instagram’s help guidance tells people to post content that does not violate another person’s intellectual-property rights. Downloading a photo therefore does not by itself give you the right to publish it elsewhere, train a model on it, or use it in marketing.

Separate the four kinds of data before you collect anything
“Instagram data” is not one field. Define exactly what you need, who owns it, and how long you will retain it.

Current Graph API products, scopes, eligibility rules, and fields change. The available material for this article does not verify which current endpoint exposes a particular profile, post, comment, or photo field. Check Meta’s live developer documentation for your account type and use case before writing endpoint-specific code.
Choose a compliant collection route
1. An export supplied by the account owner
For an account you control, or when an owner can provide the data, an Instagram information export is often the clearest starting point. Use the current Accounts Center labels shown to you, request only the categories you need, and keep the original archive unchanged. Export formats and category names can change, so treat the files as input data rather than a permanent API contract.

2. An approved Meta developer product
If you need recurring synchronization, use the Meta product and permissions that are currently documented for your account and business case. Confirm eligibility, user consent, allowed fields, rate limits, retention terms, and deletion requirements before requesting access. Do not infer that a field exists because a third-party library, blog post, or old code sample mentions it.

For a small study, a participant can provide selected links, screenshots, or files and confirm what you may analyze. This is slower than an API, but it avoids treating a public page as a blanket license. Record the participant’s scope, dates, and withdrawal process.
A do-it-yourself workflow for authorized data
- Write a data specification. List the account or accounts, the exact objects (profiles, posts, comments, or media), fields, date range, purpose, retention period, and people who may access the result.
- Confirm authority. Obtain the account owner’s express permission where required. For a developer product, verify the current Meta documentation for the account type, scopes, review requirements, and permitted uses.
- Use the permitted source. Download an owner-provided export or call the approved product. Never defeat a login wall, CAPTCHA, device check, robots control, or rate limit. Never ask a user to hand an unauthorized application their Instagram password.
- Preserve provenance. Keep the untouched archive or API response, record when and from which authorized account it came, and hash files if you need an audit trail.
- Normalize locally. Convert records into your own schema only after validating the source. Keep unknown fields instead of silently discarding them; they may be needed to explain a later mismatch.
- Minimize and protect. Store only the fields needed for the stated purpose, encrypt sensitive exports, restrict access, and set a deletion date. Separate media from metadata when different people need access.
- Validate before analysis. Check duplicate IDs, missing timestamps, timezone assumptions, malformed URLs, and whether comments belong to the expected post. Treat a missing field as “not supplied,” not as proof that no such data exists.
- Document changes. Record permission changes, failed requests, deletions, and schema changes so another developer can reproduce the result without guessing.
Runnable Python example: process an export you are allowed to use
The following script reads a local JSON export, walks nested objects without assuming one Instagram schema, and writes a CSV inventory. It does not log in, request Instagram pages, or bypass a control. It is deliberately conservative: it reports candidate records for your review instead of claiming that every matching key is an official field.

If a source delivers HTML, CSV, or several JSON files instead, write a separate importer and retain the raw files; do not scrape a live page merely because the export format is inconvenient.
Operational safeguards
Rate limits and retries
Rate limits are a platform control, not a performance challenge. Follow the limit and retry guidance for the approved product you are using. Exponential backoff, bounded concurrency, and caching can reduce accidental load, but they do not make an unauthorized request permissible. Stop on authentication, permission, or policy errors rather than retrying indefinitely.

Credentials and secrets
Keep access tokens in a secret manager or environment variable, not source control or logs. Give each job the smallest scope it needs, rotate credentials when staff or vendors change, and revoke them when the project ends. A vendor that asks for an Instagram password is not an equivalent substitute for a documented permission flow.
Media rights and retention
Store a license or permission record beside each downloaded work when you have one. Do not assume that attribution alone permits republication. Define who can see raw media, when it is deleted, and how deletion requests propagate to backups and derived datasets.

Stop new collection, identify the owner’s records and derivatives, follow the agreed deletion process, and record what was removed and when. Your contractual, legal, or platform obligations may require additional steps.
Can I combine several authorized exports into one dataset?
Yes, if each export permits the same purpose and retention period. Keep account-level provenance so records are not accidentally attributed to the wrong owner.
