To keep colors when exporting HTML to PDF, enable the print dialog’s background option and, if you control the page, add print-color-adjust: exact (plus -webkit-print-color-adjust: exact for Chromium workflows). These settings request that authored backgrounds, gradients, and images remain visible, but a user’s print preference or the conversion engine can still override them. Always verify the print preview and the PDF produced by your actual pipeline.
Why HTML colors disappear in a PDF
Web browsers optimize pages for paper. Their default print behavior may remove background colors and images to save ink or improve legibility. A page can therefore look correct on screen while its PDF has a white background. Print-specific CSS can also intentionally change the layout or palette; Mozilla notes that web pages may appear differently on paper than on screen (Firefox printing help).
The CSS property involved is print-color-adjust. MDN defines it as the control over what the user agent may do to optimize an element’s appearance on an output device (MDN reference). Its initial value, economy, permits those optimizations. exact asks the renderer to preserve the authored appearance, but it is not a way to override a person’s “do not print backgrounds” choice.
One-off export in Firefox
- Open the page and press Ctrl+P on Windows/Linux or Command+P on macOS.
- In the print dialog, select Save to PDF as the destination and inspect the preview.
- Expand More settings.
- Turn on Print backgrounds.
- Leave Format set to Original. Firefox removes the background option when Simplified is selected.
- Choose the required paper size, orientation, margins, and page range, then save the PDF.
Firefox may also show a color-mode control, depending on the available printer configuration. If the preview is still monochrome, check that the destination is a color-capable PDF printer and that no operating-system print preference is forcing grayscale.

Export from HTML you control
Add a print stylesheet that targets the elements whose color carries meaning. Put it in your normal stylesheet or in a <style media="print"> block:

</section>Use the rule selectively rather than on every element. A full-page exact adjustment can consume more ink and may reduce contrast if the design was not prepared for paper. Set explicit print colors for text and borders, and provide a non-color cue (labels, patterns, or icons) when color alone communicates status.
Check print media styles
Print CSS can hide navigation, alter font sizes, or replace a dark theme with a light one. Search your stylesheets for @media print, display: none, background declarations, and rules that set color or filter. A missing color may be an intentional print rule rather than a browser failure.

Understand the override limit
print-color-adjust: exact is a request to the user agent. MDN’s guidance on color explains that user preferences and output constraints remain authoritative (Using color wisely). A print dialog with backgrounds disabled can therefore produce a white page even when the CSS is correct. Give users a visible instruction to enable background printing when fidelity matters.

Automated HTML-to-PDF conversion
Automation has two independent controls: the page’s print CSS and the renderer’s PDF options. Configure both, then inspect a generated file in the same environment used in production.
Puppeteer (Chromium)
Puppeteer’s page.pdf() uses print CSS media and documents the Chromium-prefixed color-adjust property (Puppeteer page.pdf documentation). A minimal Node.js example is:

await browser.close();printBackground: true tells Chromium to include CSS backgrounds. Keep -webkit-print-color-adjust: exact in the page CSS for elements that must retain authored colors. Wait for fonts and images as well as network activity when your application loads them lazily; otherwise the PDF can contain blank areas even though its colors are configured correctly.

Gotenberg’s Chromium conversion documentation identifies printBackground, omitBackground, and the document’s CSS as inputs to the final PDF (Gotenberg HTML-to-PDF documentation). Do not set omitBackground when you need a colored page. If a request is sent through a wrapper or service, verify that it actually forwards the background option instead of silently applying its own defaults.
Fonts, images, and transparency
- Use absolute or correctly rooted asset URLs that the converter can access.
- Wait for web fonts before creating the PDF; a fallback font can change line wrapping and move colored blocks.
- Give images explicit dimensions to reduce layout shifts.
- Check alpha transparency. A transparent element may correctly reveal a white PDF page when the intended page background was never painted.
- For charts, include text labels or patterns so the document remains understandable in grayscale.
Adobe Acrobat web-page conversion
Acrobat’s web-page conversion settings include Retain page background for background colors and tiled images. The same settings expose page size, orientation, margins, and wide-content scaling (Adobe’s web-to-PDF settings). Enable background retention, review the page-size and scaling choices, and generate the PDF. Acrobat is useful when a conversion workflow needs these controls without maintaining browser automation code.

Troubleshooting missing colors
Preview is white, but the webpage is colored
Enable Print backgrounds (Firefox) or the equivalent background-graphics setting in your browser. If the control is absent in Firefox, change Format from Simplified to Original.
CSS is present but automation still drops backgrounds
Set the renderer’s background option. In Puppeteer that is printBackground: true; in Gotenberg, use the corresponding printBackground setting and avoid omitBackground. Confirm that the service receiving your request supports and forwards the option.
Only some components lose color
Inspect the computed print styles for those elements. A more specific print rule, a pseudo-element, an SVG fill, or a background image may be responsible. Apply the exact color-adjust rule to the component and ensure its assets are reachable by the converter.
Colors are present but look different
Print media styles, color management, transparency, and paper-size scaling can alter perception. Compare the PDF at 100% zoom, check the CSS used under print media, and avoid relying on subtle color differences without labels.
PDF pages are blank or incomplete
This is usually a loading or access problem, not a color setting. Wait for network idle and fonts, authenticate requests where required, and make sure every image, stylesheet, and font URL is available to the conversion process.

Backgrounds work locally but not in production
Pin the browser or conversion-service version, record the exact options sent, and compare a production-generated PDF with a local one. Differences in user preferences, sandbox permissions, blocked resources, or print CSS can change the result.

- Fidelity: Treat CSS and renderer settings as a pair; either one alone can be overridden.
- Repeatability: Fix browser, fonts, assets, and page data when PDFs must be identical across runs.
- Performance: Waiting for network idle improves completeness but can delay pages with persistent analytics connections; use a deliberate selector or bounded delay when appropriate.
- Privacy: Review cookies, authorization headers, and third-party resources before sending protected pages to a hosted converter.

Does converting HTML to PDF preserve hover colors?
Usually not. PDF generation uses print media and captures a static state; trigger the desired state before conversion or style it explicitly for print.
Can CSS force backgrounds when a user disables them?
No. print-color-adjust: exact requests preservation, but the user’s print preference and the renderer’s policy take priority.
Should I use RGB or CMYK values in HTML?
Use valid CSS colors and verify the target PDF workflow. The browser or converter performs the output color management; HTML alone does not guarantee a particular print profile.
