Short answer: “Google Search MCP” can mean different things. Google’s official service for this setup is the Google Developer Knowledge MCP server, whose search_documents tool searches Google developer documentation—not the public web. To research documentation and then inspect ordinary web pages, connect that server and a separate Playwright browser-automation MCP server to the same MCP client. Your client’s settings file and authentication support determine the exact configuration syntax.
What you are connecting
There are two independent MCP servers in this workflow:
| Server | Purpose | Key detail |
|---|---|---|
| Google Developer Knowledge MCP | Searches official Google developer documentation | Endpoint: https://developerknowledge.googleapis.com/mcp; exposes search_documents |
| Playwright MCP | Opens pages, inspects the DOM, clicks controls and performs browser tasks | Use its standard server configuration; Playwright documents support for multiple MCP clients |
This distinction matters. A successful search_documents call will not return general Google web results, news pages or arbitrary sites. It returns relevant excerpts and document names from Google developer documentation. Playwright is the component that works with ordinary web pages.
Prerequisites and design decisions
- An MCP client that supports more than one server (Google gives client-specific examples, including Codex).
- Credentials accepted by your chosen client and environment. Google documents API-key setup for third-party IDEs and CLI agents, and OAuth or Application Default Credentials for supported environments.
- A Playwright MCP installation configured according to Playwright’s standard instructions.
- A clear division of labor: use Google search for authoritative implementation guidance, then use Playwright for live-page verification or interaction.
Authentication is not uniform across clients. Before editing a file, check whether your client expects an API key field, an OAuth sign-in flow, or Application Default Credentials. Do not paste a secret into a shared project configuration or commit it to source control.

Configure both servers in one MCP client
1. Add Google Developer Knowledge MCP
- Open your MCP client’s server settings or configuration file.
- Add a remote MCP server entry whose URL is
https://developerknowledge.googleapis.com/mcp. - Enable the authentication method supported by your environment. For a third-party IDE or CLI agent, Google documents API-key setup. Supported Google environments may instead use OAuth or Application Default Credentials.
- Save the configuration and restart or reload the client if it does not discover new tools automatically.
- Verify that the tool list contains
search_documents.
The exact JSON or UI labels vary by client, so copy the field names shown by that client rather than assuming that a configuration from another MCP host will work unchanged.
2. Add Playwright MCP separately
- Install or enable the Playwright MCP server using Playwright’s documented standard configuration for your MCP client.
- Keep it as a second server entry; do not replace the Google endpoint with a browser endpoint.
- Grant the browser process access to the profile, display session or container resources required by your environment.
- Reload the MCP client and confirm that Playwright’s browser tools appear alongside
search_documents.
When both entries are active, the client can call documentation search and browser tools in one conversation. The servers remain separate processes or endpoints; MCP is the common interface, not a promise that one server provides the other server’s capabilities.
A practical research-to-browser workflow
Step 1: Ask for documentation, not a web search
Start with a focused query such as “OAuth setup for Google APIs in a third-party CLI.” The client should call search_documents and show document names and excerpts. Narrow the query when results mix products or versions.
Step 2: Extract the authoritative details
Record the authentication method, endpoint, required scopes and any version or environment conditions stated in the returned Google documentation. Treat excerpts as navigation: open the named document when the exact parameter or prerequisite matters.

Step 3: Hand the browser task to Playwright
Use Playwright to open the relevant page, inspect headings or code blocks, and interact with the page when necessary. Typical requests include checking whether a documentation link resolves, reading the currently rendered text, or reproducing a sign-in flow in a test profile.
Step 4: Keep claims traceable
Have the agent identify which result came from Google documentation and which observation came from the live browser. A page’s current text can change independently of the documentation search index.
Example MCP client configuration pattern
Clients use different setting names, so the following is a conceptual checklist rather than a universal file to paste:
- Google server: remote URL set to
https://developerknowledge.googleapis.com/mcp; authentication set using the method your client and Google environment support; expected toolsearch_documents. - Playwright server: the standard Playwright MCP command and options supplied by Playwright for your client; expected browser tools enabled.
- Isolation: separate names such as
google-developer-knowledgeandplaywright, so prompts and logs make the selected server obvious.
If the client reports an unknown field, compare its current MCP schema with the example for that client. A configuration copied from Codex, an IDE or a CLI agent may not be portable without changing the wrapper fields.

Prompts that prevent tool confusion
- “Search Google developer documentation for the official OAuth requirements. Use
search_documents; do not perform a browser search.” - “Open the documentation URL returned by the previous step with Playwright and report the rendered heading and the code sample language.”
- “If the page requires interaction, use the browser tool. Do not treat the browser page as evidence that the Google documentation search covered the whole web.”
Explicit tool instructions reduce accidental calls to the wrong server, especially when both servers expose similarly named navigation or retrieval capabilities.
Troubleshooting
The Google server connects but no search tool appears
Reload the MCP client and inspect the server’s reported tools. Confirm that the URL is exactly https://developerknowledge.googleapis.com/mcp and that authentication completed. A connected transport without valid authorization may expose no usable tool.
Results are not ordinary Google Search results
That is expected. This service searches Google developer documentation. Use Playwright for public websites, and describe the two operations separately in your agent prompt.
Authentication fails in an IDE or CLI agent
Use the API-key procedure Google documents for third-party IDEs and CLI agents. In a supported Google environment, try OAuth or Application Default Credentials instead. Check that the credential is available to the same process that launches the MCP client.

Playwright tools are missing
Verify that the Playwright MCP server is a second, enabled entry and that the client was restarted after installation. Check the client’s server log for a launch or permission error, then apply Playwright’s standard configuration for that specific client.
The browser opens but cannot inspect a page
Check whether the page is still loading, requires a login, or is blocked by a bot challenge. Use a test account and an isolated browser profile for authenticated flows. Do not claim that a blocked page was inspected successfully.
The agent cites stale or conflicting information
Ask it to return the document name and excerpt from search_documents, then have Playwright open the cited page and report what is currently rendered. Differences can reflect updates to the page or search index; preserve both observations and their source.
Security, reliability and operating costs
Protect credentials and sessions
- Keep API keys out of prompts, screenshots and committed configuration.
- Use a separate browser profile for automation; never expose personal cookies to an agent by default.
- Limit permissions for credentials used by unattended jobs.
Make runs reproducible
- Record the MCP client, server names and date of each run.
- Save the returned document names and the browser URL.
- Use deterministic test pages where possible and distinguish rendered content from documentation excerpts.
Expect two failure surfaces
A documentation request can fail because of endpoint or credential configuration, while a browser request can fail because of navigation, page scripts, authentication or anti-bot controls. Retry only the failing stage; repeating both stages can produce different evidence and unnecessary load.

If your goal is a clean image or PDF of a page rather than interactive inspection, ScreenshotNeo provides a single-call website screenshot API. It accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and whether the request was billed.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for options such as full-page capture with lazy images, CSS-selector elements, device presets, dark mode, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, request blocking, headers and cookies, PDFs, signed links, asynchronous webhooks and bulk capture.

ScreenshotNeo also has an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
When this architecture is the right fit
- Use both servers when you need authoritative Google developer guidance followed by live-page inspection.
- Use only Google Developer Knowledge MCP when the task is documentation discovery and no browser interaction is needed.
- Use only Playwright when you already know the source and need to interact with an ordinary website.
- Use ScreenshotNeo when the deliverable is a cleaned screenshot or PDF rather than a browser session.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Google Developer Knowledge MCP a general Google web-search API?
No. Its documented search_documents tool searches Google developer documentation and returns document names with relevant excerpts.
Can one MCP client use Google and Playwright at the same time?
Yes, when the client supports multiple MCP servers. Configure the Google endpoint and Playwright as separate server entries.
Which authentication method should I choose?
Google documents API keys for third-party IDEs and CLI agents, and OAuth or Application Default Credentials for supported environments. Follow the method your client and runtime support.
The Bottom Line
Configure Google Developer Knowledge MCP for documentation search and Playwright MCP for live browser work; they complement each other but are not the same service.
