Build the MCP layer around the application you actually need to control: use Playwright MCP for browser pages, and Windows UI Automation (UIA) for native Windows controls. MCP exposes tools to an AI client; it does not provide a universal automation engine. Your server must inspect application state, locate semantic controls, perform narrowly scoped actions, and verify the result.

The practical design is a small, privileged adapter with separate inspection and action tools. Start with one target surface, pin the protocol and SDK versions, test against real controls (including failures), and require confirmation for consequential changes.

Choose the automation surface before writing the server

Browser DOM/accessibility trees and native desktop control trees are different interfaces. Treat them as interchangeable only at the MCP boundary, not inside the backend.

There is no evidence-backed winner for every operating system or application. If the workflow crosses a browser and a native app, expose two explicit backends and identify the target in every tool call instead of silently guessing.

A small architecture that is easy to constrain

Keep the server understandable to both the host and the operator. A useful request path is:

  1. Session manager: starts or attaches to the browser or Windows desktop session and records the target application identity.
  2. Inspection adapter: returns a bounded snapshot of visible state, not an unrestricted dump of the entire desktop.
  3. Locator: resolves a role, name, automation ID, selector or other semantic property to a current element.
  4. Action adapter: performs one operation such as click, type, select, invoke or submit.
  5. Verifier: reads post-action state and returns observable evidence of success or a structured failure.
  6. Policy layer: validates inputs, allowed applications, destinations, files and operation types before the backend runs.

Keep inspection and mutation as different tools. A model can call inspect_page or inspect_window without receiving permission to click, type or submit. Return stable identifiers only for the duration in which they are valid; dynamic pages and windows can invalidate references after navigation or rerendering.

Browser implementation with Playwright MCP

Install the documented starting point

Playwright’s getting-started material lists Node.js 20 or newer as a prerequisite and demonstrates launching its MCP server with the package runner:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
npx @playwright/mcp@latest

Use that command as a browser-specific adapter, not as a requirement imposed by MCP itself. Configure your MCP client to start the process with a controlled working directory and environment. Pin a tested package version in production rather than relying indefinitely on @latest.

Use snapshots instead of coordinate clicks

The documented Playwright flow exposes an accessibility snapshot with roles, visible text and element references. A safe interaction loop is:

  1. Request a fresh snapshot for the intended page.
  2. Choose a control by semantic role and name, checking that the surrounding page and origin are expected.
  3. Invoke one action using the current reference.
  4. Request another snapshot and verify the changed state, URL, confirmation text or download result.

Do not cache a reference across navigation unless the adapter confirms it is still valid. If a control is missing, report that fact instead of falling back automatically to screen coordinates or an unbounded click.

Expose a narrow browser tool contract

A browser-oriented MCP server can define tools such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • browser_inspect — returns the current URL, title and a size-limited accessibility snapshot.
  • browser_find — resolves a role/name or selector and returns a redacted description.
  • browser_click — accepts only a previously resolved reference and an optional confirmation token.
  • browser_fill — limits fields to an allowlist and never echoes secret values.
  • browser_verify — checks URL, text, role state or download metadata after an action.

Validate URL schemes and permitted origins before navigation. Treat file downloads, uploads, new windows and clipboard access as separate capabilities that can be disabled by policy.

Native Windows automation with UI Automation

Understand the client/provider model

Microsoft’s UI Automation model gives a client an element tree plus properties, control patterns and events. A provider exposes those semantics from the application. Standard Windows controls commonly have providers; a custom control or a third-party control without one may expose little or no actionable information.

Minimal C# inspection-and-invoke example

The following console-style method illustrates the semantic sequence: find a top-level window, locate a button by its control type and name, invoke it, then read the resulting state. Add references to the Windows UI Automation client assemblies when creating the project.

        if (window == null)
            throw new InvalidOperationException("Target window was not found.");

        var button = window.FindFirst(
            TreeScope.Descendants,
            new AndCondition(
                new PropertyCondition(AutomationElement.ControlTypeProperty,
                    ControlType.Button),

        ((InvokePattern)pattern).Invoke();
        Console.WriteLine("Action sent; inspect the window again to verify state.");
    }
}

Names in this example are application-specific. In a real adapter, discover the window using a process identifier or an explicitly approved title, reject ambiguous matches, and collect the control’s supported patterns before attempting an action. For text entry, check for a value or text pattern; for selection, check the relevant selection pattern. Never assume that a visible rectangle implies an invokable control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Handle unsupported and dynamic controls explicitly

  • Return a machine-readable unsupported_control error when no provider exposes the required pattern.
  • Offer a separately permissioned fallback only when you can bound its window, coordinates and effects.
  • Subscribe to UIA events where available instead of polling indefinitely.
  • Reacquire elements after a dialog opens, a list refreshes or a window changes state.

Microsoft’s provider coverage notes are a reason to test the exact applications you intend to support; they are not a guarantee for every custom toolkit.

Design tools around inspect, act and verify

Inspection results

Return enough context for an AI client to choose safely: application name, process ID or approved session ID, window title, element role, accessible name, enabled/visible state, supported patterns and a short ancestry path. Redact passwords, tokens, personal data and large document contents. Apply limits on node count, text length and recursion depth.

Action inputs

Use typed arguments rather than a free-form instruction string. For example, a click tool can require target_id, while a file-export tool separately requires an approved directory and filename. Reject unknown fields, invalid enum values, oversized text and paths outside an allowlist.

Post-action evidence

Every mutating tool should return what changed and how it was checked: a new UIA property value, a fresh accessibility snapshot, a URL transition, a visible confirmation or a file whose path and size meet policy. A successful API call only proves that input was delivered, not that the application completed the requested work.

Security is outside the protocol handshake

The Playwright MCP project states: “Playwright MCP is not a security boundary.” Its configuration documentation also describes origin lists and file-access guards as convenience defenses rather than isolation. Treat tool descriptions, annotations and allowlists as inputs to your policy, not proof that a server is safe.

MCP maintainers explain that annotations can describe likely tool behavior, but a client should treat them as untrusted unless they come from a trusted server. Put the actual controls in the host and server:

  • Run the adapter under a dedicated OS account or isolated desktop session when possible.
  • Allow only named applications, origins, directories and operations.
  • Require explicit confirmation before sending messages, deleting data, submitting forms, purchasing, changing permissions or exporting sensitive files.
  • Keep credentials out of snapshots and logs; pass secrets through protected configuration and redact errors.
  • Record who requested an action, which target was resolved, the policy decision and the verification result.
  • Test in a nonproduction account first, make incremental changes and validate the result after each step.

For unattended operation, add timeouts, cancellation, rate limits and a kill switch that terminates the automation session.

Pin the MCP protocol and SDK versions

At the time of this article, MCP maintainers identify 2026-07-28 as the current specification release, with a stateless core, a formal extensions framework and authorization changes. Protocol details and SDKs can change, so record the version your server implements, check the negotiated version at startup and fail clearly when a client requests an unsupported version. The Playwright Node.js 20 requirement belongs to that adapter, not to MCP as a whole.

Testing, reliability and performance

Build a test matrix

  • Browser pages with delayed content, navigation and accessibility changes.
  • Win32, Windows Forms and WPF controls, plus every custom or third-party control your users depend on.
  • Missing windows, duplicate names, disabled controls, modal dialogs and stale element references.
  • Network failures, crashed applications, expired sessions and cancelled actions.
  • Policy violations such as an unapproved origin, path or destructive operation.

Keep latency predictable

Prefer one bounded inspection followed by one action and one verification over repeated full-tree scans. Set per-tool and overall deadlines. Use event notifications for UIA changes where practical; in browsers, wait for a specific semantic condition rather than a fixed sleep. Limit snapshot size and avoid sending unchanged state to the model.

Recover without guessing

Classify failures as target-not-found, ambiguous-target, unsupported-pattern, timeout, policy-denied, application-crashed or verification-failed. A retry is appropriate only for transient conditions such as a window still opening. Never retry a potentially destructive action without checking whether it already succeeded.

Or skip the browser setup

If your task is to capture a browser page rather than operate its controls, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.

One request is enough:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

And in Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one MCP server automate both a browser and a native Windows app?

Yes. Keep separate Playwright and UIA adapters behind distinct tools, sessions and policy rules. Report the active target explicitly so a browser action cannot be mistaken for a desktop action.

What should the server do when a control has no UI Automation provider?

Return an explicit unsupported-control result, log the application and control identity, and require a separately reviewed fallback. Do not silently switch to coordinates or claim that every custom control is automatable.

Does MCP itself provide desktop isolation?

No. MCP transports tool calls and results. Authentication, authorization, OS isolation, confirmation and auditing must be implemented by the host and server.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why verify after every action?

Input delivery is not completion. The application may reject, delay or redirect an action; a fresh snapshot, property read, event or file check provides evidence of the resulting state.
