Use PyAutoGUI’s region argument to capture a window: first obtain the window’s current screen rectangle, then call pyautogui.screenshot(region=(left, top, width, height)). The tuple is in screen coordinates and controls whether borders and the title bar appear. PyAutoGUI does not provide a portable, title-based window lookup API, so finding the rectangle is a separate, platform-specific step.

The core PyAutoGUI operation

Install PyAutoGUI with pip install pyautogui. It uses Pillow for the returned image. Once you know the target window’s left and top coordinates and its width and height, capture it like this:

import pyautogui

left, top, width, height = 100, 80, 900, 600
image = pyautogui.screenshot(region=(left, top, width, height))
image.save("window.png")

You can also pass a filename directly: pyautogui.screenshot("window.png", region=(left, top, width, height)). The image is a Pillow object when no filename is supplied, so you can further crop, convert, or inspect it before saving.

What the four region values mean

Value Meaning Typical mistake
left Horizontal screen coordinate of the region’s top-left corner Using a window-relative coordinate instead of a screen coordinate
top Vertical screen coordinate of the top-left corner Forgetting that a second monitor can have negative coordinates
width Number of pixels to capture horizontally Confusing right edge with width
height Number of pixels to capture vertically Including or excluding borders unintentionally

If a window rectangle is (left, top, right, bottom), convert it before calling PyAutoGUI:

left, top, right, bottom = window_bounds
region = (left, top, right - left, bottom - top)
pyautogui.screenshot(region=region).save("window.png")

PyAutoGUI captures pixels, not a semantic “window” object. A rectangle that starts at the outer frame includes the title bar and borders. A client-area rectangle begins inside those decorations and excludes them.

Finding a window by title on Windows

PyAutoGUI’s project overview documents window locating and management as Windows-only. For a title-based workflow, use a Windows window-information library such as PyGetWindow to enumerate or select a window, read its bounds, and pass those bounds to PyAutoGUI.

import pyautogui
import pygetwindow as gw

matches = [w for w in gw.getWindowsWithTitle("Notepad") if w.title]
if not matches:
    raise RuntimeError("No matching window was found")

window = matches[0]
if window.isMinimized:
    window.restore()
window.activate()

# PyGetWindow exposes the outer window rectangle.
left, top = window.left, window.top
width, height = window.width, window.height
pyautogui.screenshot(region=(left, top, width, height)).save("notepad-window.png")

Titles can change as documents or tabs change, and several windows may share a title. Filter the returned list more precisely, or select by process and handle when your chosen Windows library supports that. Restore and activate the window before capture if it may be minimized or covered. If the application moves, reacquire its bounds immediately before each shot.

macOS and Linux: obtain bounds through the native desktop

PyAutoGUI’s portable primitive remains the same, but title lookup is not documented as a cross-platform PyAutoGUI feature. On macOS, obtain the rectangle through the Accessibility/window API or another compatible library. The user must grant Screen Recording and, where needed, Accessibility permission in System Settings. On Linux, use the desktop’s native window API or a compatible library and verify whether the session is X11 or Wayland; compositor policy can restrict window enumeration or screen capture.

After your platform-specific code returns (left, top, right, bottom), the capture is identical:

import pyautogui

left, top, right, bottom = get_bounds_from_your_os_api()
region = (left, top, right - left, bottom - top)
pyautogui.screenshot(region=region).save("window.png")

Do not assume that coordinates reported by an accessibility API, a window manager, and a screenshot backend use the same scaling. Test on every display arrangement you support.

When the window moves: reacquire or locate it visually

Reacquire a known window rectangle

The fastest reliable loop is to cache bounds while the window is stationary and refresh them whenever your automation detects movement. A 1920×1080 screenshot takes roughly 100 milliseconds according to the PyAutoGUI screenshot documentation, so repeated captures are usually inexpensive compared with discovery.

for frame in range(10):
    left, top, width, height = read_current_window_rectangle()
    pyautogui.screenshot(region=(left, top, width, height)).save(f"frame-{frame:02d}.png")

Find a visual landmark

For appearance-based discovery, use pyautogui.locateOnScreen() with a small template image. It returns a bounding box that you can convert to a region. Locate calls are documented as taking about one or two seconds in the cited example, so they are substantially slower than capturing a known rectangle.

import pyautogui

try:
    box = pyautogui.locateOnScreen("window-corner.png", confidence=0.9)
except pyautogui.ImageNotFoundException:
    raise RuntimeError("The visual landmark is not visible")

left, top, width, height = box
pyautogui.screenshot(region=(left, top, width, height)).save("located.png")

The confidence argument requires OpenCV. Restrict the search with region=(search_left, search_top, search_width, search_height) to reduce false matches and work. Templates are sensitive to theme, scaling, window content, and localization; use a distinctive, stable element rather than a changing title.

Full window versus client area

  • Outer bounds: include title bar, borders, and shadows; useful for documentation of the complete application frame.
  • Client bounds: include only the application content; better for OCR, visual regression, and product screenshots.
  • Manual inset: subtracting a fixed number of pixels is fragile because decorations vary by operating system, theme, DPI, and window state.

Prefer client-area bounds supplied by the operating system when available. If you must crop manually, record the decoration assumptions alongside your code and test maximized, restored, and high-DPI states.

Dependencies and display-server requirements

  • Install PyAutoGUI and its Pillow dependency with pip install pyautogui.
  • On Linux, the PyAutoGUI screenshot documentation lists scrot as required.
  • macOS uses the system screencapture utility underneath the documented screenshot workflow.
  • On Windows, DPI scaling can make logical window dimensions differ from physical screenshot pixels.
  • Multiple monitors may produce negative coordinates or different scale factors.
  • Wayland and macOS privacy controls can deny enumeration or capture even when Python code is correct.

Run a small diagnostic capture on the deployment machine and compare the saved image dimensions with the expected physical pixel size before building a larger automation job.

Troubleshooting common failures

The screenshot is shifted or clipped

Cause: the rectangle uses stale bounds, logical rather than physical coordinates, or the wrong monitor origin. Fix: reacquire bounds immediately before capture, log all four values, and test each DPI and monitor configuration.

The title bar is present when it should not be

Cause: you captured outer bounds. Fix: request client-area bounds from the window API, or apply a tested crop for that exact operating-system configuration.

The title bar or border is missing

Cause: your bounds start inside the client area. Fix: use the outer rectangle and include the decoration pixels.

locateOnScreen cannot find the template

Cause: the template differs because of scaling, theme, animation, or occlusion. Fix: capture a fresh template at the same scale, search a smaller known area, wait for the UI to settle, and use confidence only with OpenCV installed. Handle ImageNotFoundException rather than assuming a match exists.

Linux reports a screenshot or display error

Install scrot, confirm the DISPLAY or session configuration, and check whether Wayland policy permits the requested operation. A different desktop session may require a native portal or compositor-specific solution.

macOS returns a blank or blocked image

Enable Screen Recording permission for the terminal, IDE, or packaged application that actually runs Python. Re-run the capture after restarting that application so the permission is applied.

The window is minimized or covered

Restore and activate it before reading bounds. If the application is still covered, a normal screen capture records the covering pixels; PyAutoGUI is not an off-screen window renderer.

Performance, reliability, and design choices

Approach Strength Cost or limitation
Known rectangle Fastest and simplest capture Breaks when the window moves or scaling changes
Title-based lookup Readable and convenient on Windows Platform-specific; titles are not always unique or stable
Visual locating Can recover from movement without a window API About one to two seconds per locate call; sensitive to appearance
Native client-area API Best control over decorations and geometry Different integration for each operating system and display server

For a stable test suite, discover once, validate the rectangle, and capture repeatedly. For an interactive desktop that users move, reacquire after movement. For unattended jobs, fail clearly when permissions, display access, or a visual match is unavailable instead of saving a misleading image.
