Start with the browser’s Print dialog and choose options according to where the PDF will be used. Use the destination’s paper size, select portrait or landscape based on the page shape, preview for clipping, and adjust scale and margins until text remains readable. Turn on background graphics only when color or imagery carries meaning. For repeatable, code-driven exports, account for print CSS and @page rules rather than assuming one API flag guarantees the same result everywhere.
How do I save a web page as a PDF?
Open the page you want to preserve, launch the browser’s print command, and select the PDF destination. In Firefox the documented destination is Save to PDF; other browsers may show a system PDF printer or a similarly named option. The exact menu labels vary by browser and operating system.
- Open the page and wait for important content, images, and expandable sections to finish loading.
- Choose Print from the browser menu or use the browser’s print shortcut.
- Select the PDF destination rather than a physical printer.
- Set the page range, paper size, orientation, scale, margins, headers and footers, and background options.
- Inspect the preview at several pages, then save the file and open it in a PDF viewer to check the actual output.
A web page can deliberately use a different print layout. Mozilla’s Firefox help warns: “Web pages can set themselves up to appear different on paper to how they look on screen, so don’t be surprised to see some changes.” Navigation bars may disappear, columns may stack, and interactive controls may be replaced by static text.
Choose settings by the PDF’s destination
There is no universal best preset. Decide first whether the file is mainly a screen archive, a printed handout, or a document that must remain navigable and accessible. Then use the preview to balance readability, fit, fidelity, provenance, and paper use.

What paper size and orientation should I choose?
Match the actual paper
Select Letter for a Letter-sized workflow and A4 for an A4 workflow. The choice affects line wrapping, page breaks, and scaling. If the PDF will only be read on screens, choose the size used by the people who may later print it; otherwise a later conversion can introduce unexpected breaks.
Use portrait for text and landscape for width
Portrait is the safer starting point for articles, manuals, and forms. Choose landscape when a table, code listing, spreadsheet-like report, or visualization is intrinsically wider than a portrait page. Do not rotate a narrow page merely to reduce page count: the result can be harder to read and waste horizontal space.
Preview wide content page by page
Check the first wide table, a middle page, and the final page. Look for a column split across pages, a fixed-position element covering text, or a heading stranded at the bottom. Changing orientation may solve one problem while creating another, so verify the complete range.
How do I stop a web page from being cut off?
Try scale before changing everything else
Use the browser’s fit-to-printable-area option when available. If it makes text uncomfortably small, try a custom scale slightly below 100 percent and inspect the preview. Actual size preserves the page’s physical dimensions but may clip content that exceeds the selected paper.

Reducing margins can recover a clipped right edge or bottom line. Increasing margins can improve readability and provide room for notes. Browser defaults and printer-safe areas differ, so a PDF that looks correct on screen may still lose edge content on a physical printer.
Change orientation or paper size for genuinely wide layouts
If scaling makes the type too small, switch a wide page to landscape or use a larger paper size. This is usually better than forcing a complex table into a tiny portrait column.
Check the page itself
Cookie notices, chat widgets, sticky navigation, and scrollable panels can intrude into a capture. Close overlays where possible. A page’s print stylesheet may intentionally hide them, but you should confirm that the information you need is still present.
Should I print background graphics?
Enable backgrounds when a color, shaded cell, map layer, or image is part of the information or the intended appearance. Disable them for a text-first document where they add decoration, increase file size, or consume printer ink. Browsers can apply a simplified print mode that removes visual material; in Firefox, Simplified format cannot be combined with printing backgrounds.

Always compare a background-on preview with the background-off version. A white logo on a dark header may disappear when backgrounds are omitted, while a decorative gradient may make an otherwise readable report expensive to print.
Margins, headers, footers, and provenance
Margins determine how much of each page is available for content. Headers and footers add context such as the page title, source URL, date, or page number, which is valuable when pages are separated from the file. They also reduce the content area and can create an extra line that pushes a heading or table to the next page.
For an internal screen archive, turn them off if they distract from the page. For printed research, legal review, or handouts, retaining a URL and date can make the source easier to identify later. Review the first and last page for duplicated browser labels or a footer colliding with page content.
Browser-specific behavior to expect
Firefox
Firefox documents a print flow with page range, paper size, orientation, scale, margins, headers and footers, and background controls. Its Simplified format is offered only on pages where Firefox can provide it and disables background printing. Use the preview rather than assuming the on-screen layout will be reproduced.
Microsoft Edge
Edge documents fit-to-printable-area, actual-size, and custom-scale choices. Use fit when the priority is avoiding clipping; use actual size when physical dimensions matter; use custom scale when you need a compromise. Confirm the result on pages containing wide tables or fixed navigation.
Acrobat web conversion
Adobe Acrobat’s web conversion workflow exposes controls beyond a basic browser dialog, including bookmarks, PDF tags, headers and footers, HTML encoding, font and color defaults, retained backgrounds, image conversion, expansion of scrollable blocks, page layout, and fitting wide content. Interfaces vary by Acrobat edition and version; Adobe’s help page was last updated September 23, 2025.
Developer exports: print CSS and PDF APIs
Automated export is not simply “take a screenshot and save it as PDF.” Browsers commonly apply print CSS, so rules inside @media print can hide navigation, change colors, or restructure columns. CSS @page can declare a preferred size and margins. Test representative pages instead of relying on one preset.

Playwright
Playwright’s page.pdf() uses print CSS media. Its options include paper dimensions, margins, scale, page ranges, background printing, tagged output, and preferCSSPageSize. When that preference is enabled, CSS @page takes priority; otherwise content is scaled to fit the chosen paper size.

Electron
Electron’s webContents.printToPDF supports paper size, orientation, margins, scale, page ranges, header and footer templates, and background printing. It also exposes experimental tagged-PDF and document-outline options. Electron cautions that tagged output may not fully meet PDF/UA and WCAG requirements, so validate with an accessibility checker and manual review.
Accessibility and navigation
Tags and outlines can help screen-reader users and make long files easier to navigate, but support varies by engine and version. Check heading structure, reading order, link targets, selectable text, and focus-related content in the generated PDF. A visually correct file can still have a broken logical order.

Troubleshooting PDF exports
The right side of a table is missing
Switch to landscape, choose fit-to-printable-area, reduce margins, or use a larger paper size. If fit makes text too small, use a custom scale and consider restructuring the table for print.

Text is tiny
Undo an aggressive fit scale, remove unnecessary headers and footers, and use landscape or a larger paper size instead of shrinking everything.
Colors or charts disappeared
Enable background graphics and disable simplified formatting where applicable. Confirm that the page’s print CSS is not intentionally removing the element.
A popup or sticky widget covers content
Dismiss it before printing, wait for the page to settle, or use a capture workflow that can hide selectors and remove known consent and chat components.
Images or fonts are missing in automation
Wait for network activity and font loading, ensure lazy images are triggered, and test after the page reaches the intended state. A successful HTTP response does not prove that every visual resource finished rendering.

Tagged output fails an accessibility check
Treat tags and outlines as aids, not certification. Inspect reading order, heading hierarchy, links, and alternative text, then remediate the source page or PDF as needed.
FAQ
Is PDF export the same as a screenshot?
No. PDF export uses a paginated print layout and can preserve selectable text, links, and document structure; a screenshot is a fixed image. A PDF may therefore reflow or omit screen-only elements.
Should I use Letter or A4 for a screen-only archive?
Choose the size most likely to be used later. The choice still affects line wrapping and page breaks even when nobody prints immediately.
Can an API option guarantee PDF/UA compliance?
No. Tagged-PDF support varies, and Electron specifically describes its tagged generation as experimental. Conformance requires testing the produced document.
