To capture everything on a web page, first decide what “complete” means: a full-page image preserves how the page looked, a PDF makes a paginated document, a saved HTML bundle helps you reopen it offline, and a DOM or accessibility snapshot records structure and text. For a repeatable full-page image, use Firefox’s built-in screenshot command or automate a browser with Playwright; for a one-off, use Firefox’s screenshot tool.
Choose the right kind of complete capture
There is no single file that preserves every property of a live website. Pick the output according to what you need to keep:

A screenshot is the right choice for visual evidence, design review, and chart or canvas content. A PDF is better for reading and printing. An offline bundle is not a guaranteed archive of a working site, and a DOM snapshot is not a substitute for either visual output or a saved web page.
Capture a full page in Firefox
Firefox can take a full-page screenshot without manually stitching scrolling screenshots together. The image is saved in the browser’s Downloads directory.

- Open the page in Firefox and wait for the content you need to appear.
- Open Developer Tools and select the toolbox options menu.
- Enable the button named Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Click that screenshot button. Firefox captures the full page and saves the image to Downloads.
For a command-line-like workflow inside Firefox, open the Web Console and use :screenshot --fullpage. The helper also supports --delay to wait before capture, --dpr to set device-pixel ratio, --filename to choose a filename, and --selector to capture a particular element. Automate a full-page screenshot with Playwright
Playwright’s full-page option captures the full scrollable page as if it had a screen tall enough to contain it. Use this when you need repeatable output, scripted waits or a batch workflow. The documented API calls are concise, but they assume you already have a Playwright browser and page set up.

With a Playwright page already created and navigated, use:

These API examples produce a screenshot of the page’s full scrollable area; they do not automatically perform page-specific interactions, sign in, or guarantee that content gated behind a click has been revealed. The CLI also supports --hires for device-pixel capture and PNG, JPEG, and WebP output. Check the CLI reference for the installed version’s precise options: Playwright CLI documentation.
Save a web page for offline use
In Firefox, choose File > Save Page As…, then select Web page, complete. Firefox saves the HTML document along with a directory of files needed to show the page, including pictures. Mozilla notes that this option may not preserve the original HTML link structure. Web page, HTML only creates one HTML file without pictures; text export retains readable text but not the original HTML structure. See Mozilla’s explanation of saving a web page.

Scripts, authentication, cross-origin resources, external assets, and links may behave differently or fail when reopened offline. If offline fidelity matters, disconnect networking and test the saved copy before relying on it.
Export a page as PDF
PDF creates a paginated document, not a tall screenshot. Printing may apply print-specific styles, reflow content, split sections across pages, or omit interface elements.
Chrome Headless
Chrome Headless can print a URL to PDF with:
chrome --headless --print-to-pdf https://example.com/
This writes output.pdf. Add --no-pdf-header-footer to omit print headers and footers. To allow a page time to load, use --timeout=5000 to wait up to five seconds, or --virtual-time-budget=42000 when time-dependent page code needs virtual time to advance before printing. Playwright CLI
Playwright CLI provides a PDF command; a named output can be requested with playwright-cli pdf --filename=page.pdf. Consult the Playwright CLI documentation for the command’s available settings.

Capture text or structure instead of pixels
For analysis or automation, a DOM or accessibility representation may be more useful than an image. Chrome’s --dump-dom serializes the DOM after Chrome has parsed the HTML and run scripts that alter it; it is not the same as downloading raw HTML with curl. The Chrome Headless documentation describes the –dump-dom flag. Playwright’s accessibility snapshots are intended for understanding page structure and reading text, while screenshots document visual layout, charts, and bugs; see Playwright accessibility snapshots.
Choose a DOM or accessibility snapshot when roles, text, and structure are the deliverable. Choose a screenshot when appearance matters. Neither format guarantees access to content hidden behind authentication, interaction, or browser security boundaries.
Handle lazy-loaded and interactive content
A full-page capture covers the page’s scrollable area, but that does not ensure all of its content has loaded or become visible. Lazy images may load only after scrolling; menus and accordions may need interaction; charts and animations may still be updating. A capture can also miss content blocked by login or cross-origin restrictions, or omit resources that failed to load.

- Wait for a meaningful page state, not just initial navigation. In a script, perform required interactions and wait for the relevant content before capturing.
- For Firefox, add
:screenshot --delaywhen a fixed pause is sufficient. - For Chrome Headless PDF output, use
--timeoutor--virtual-time-budgetwhen appropriate. - In Playwright, scroll or interact as needed, wait for the specific content, then capture. A generic delay is less reliable than waiting for the element that matters.
- Record whether the page was authenticated and the viewport and tool settings used if the image will be used as evidence or compared later.
Sticky headers may appear repeated or cover content in long captures. Inspect the result rather than assuming a technically successful screenshot contains every section cleanly.
Verify the result before relying on it
- Scroll through the saved image or document and confirm content below the fold is present.
- Check lazy-loaded images, embedded frames, charts, and sticky headers for omissions or duplication.
- For an offline bundle, reopen it with networking disabled if offline behavior is important.
- For a PDF, check page breaks, selectable text, fonts, and whether print headers and footers are present.
- Keep the source URL and capture time with the artifact so readers can distinguish the snapshot from the live page.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
The screenshot stops at the visible viewport
Use Firefox’s entire-page screenshot control or the Web Console’s :screenshot --fullpage option. In Playwright, set fullPage: true in JavaScript or full_page=True in Python. A regular viewport screenshot is not a full-page capture.
Images or lower sections are missing
The site may load them only when scrolled into view, or the capture may have started too soon. Scroll through the page or wait for the relevant selector or state before capturing. Check embedded frames and content behind interaction separately.
The page is blank or incomplete
Possible causes include a failed navigation, a bot check, a login requirement, a timeout, or resources that did not load. Confirm the page in the same browser session, sign in if authorized, wait for the actual content, and inspect the artifact. A screenshot cannot bypass access controls or reliably reproduce content that the browser could not render.
The PDF looks different from the site
PDF printing uses pagination and may apply print CSS. Review page breaks and headers and footers; use a full-page image instead if the visual screen layout is what you need to preserve.
The offline copy does not work like the live page
A complete save can include pictures and resources without preserving working scripts, authentication, original link structure, or externally hosted assets. Test the saved page offline, and use a screenshot or PDF if the priority is a fixed visual record.

A full-scroll image can be extremely tall, and high device-pixel output increases its dimensions. Use a PDF for a paginated reading copy, or capture a specific element when only one section matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a full-page screenshot include content hidden in menus or accordions?
Not unless that content is rendered and visible to the capture. Open the relevant controls before taking the screenshot.
Is a saved complete web page the same as a permanent website archive?
No. It can save HTML and resources but does not guarantee scripts, authentication, links, or external resources will work offline.
Should I use an image or PDF as visual evidence?
Use an image when screen appearance is the evidence; use a PDF when a paginated document is more useful.
