Most “missing Chromium” errors in requests-html have one of three causes: the first-use browser download did not finish, Python is looking in a different pyppeteer cache, or Chromium downloaded but cannot launch. Treat those as separate stages. Run a minimal render() call in the same virtual environment, container, notebook, and user account as your application; then use the final traceback to choose the matching fix below.
Why requests-html needs Chromium
requests-html does not render JavaScript with its HTTP client alone. Its project documentation describes JavaScript support through Chromium, provided by pyppeteer. The first call to HTML.render() (or its asynchronous counterpart) is documented to download a Chromium revision into pyppeteer’s browser directory. That means a render failure can occur before any page is opened.
The download is substantial: the pyppeteer repository describes an initial download of approximately 150 MB. That is an approximate project statement, not a permanent size guarantee. First use therefore needs network access and writable storage. A completed download still does not prove that the executable can start.
Start with a minimal reproduction
Use the same interpreter and account that runs your application. Do not test in a different shell, IDE, notebook kernel, Docker stage, or virtual environment.

print(response.html.html[:200])Keep the entire traceback, including the last exception and any Chromium stderr. The wording at the end usually identifies whether you have a download, cache, or launch problem.
Fix a download that never starts or fails
Confirm first-use network access
The documented first-render behavior means the process must reach pyppeteer’s download host. Corporate proxies, firewalls, restricted build networks, and offline containers can prevent that. Check the traceback for an HTTP, DNS, TLS, proxy, or connection error. A browser that was downloaded on your laptop is not automatically available inside a container or deployment runtime.
Check writable storage
Verify that the account running Python can create directories and files in the home or application environment used by pyppeteer. Read-only containers, locked-down service accounts, and ephemeral build steps commonly make a download appear to “disappear.” Download once during an image-build step only if the runtime uses the same user and cache location; otherwise the application may attempt a second download.
Do not confuse a blocked download with a launch failure
If the traceback ends with a network or file-write exception, solve that first. Installing random system packages will not repair a download that never completed.

Fix “Chromium not found” after a successful download
When logs say the download completed but a later process cannot find Chromium, compare the environment that downloaded it with the one that is now rendering:
- Use the same Python executable (
python -c "import sys; print(sys.executable)"). - Use the same operating-system user and
HOMEvalue. - Check whether a container, notebook kernel, CI job, or service account has a different home directory.
- Confirm the installed pyppeteer version before relying on older configuration examples.
The pyppeteer API reference documents PYPPETEER_HOME as the setting for browser storage. If your installed release supports it, set that variable to a directory that exists and is writable, then run the minimal reproduction again:
export PYPPETEER_HOME=/opt/pyppeteer-cache
python your_test.pyOn Windows, set the equivalent environment variable in the process or service configuration rather than only in an unrelated terminal. A cache path is useful only when the same path is visible to the process that launches Chromium.
Fix a browser that downloads but will not launch
An error such as “browser closed unexpectedly,” an exit code, or a missing shared-library message is a launch/runtime failure, not a missing-download failure. Inspect the final launch exception and platform details.

Linux dependencies
The requests-html documentation warns that Linux may require additional packages for pyppeteer, but it does not provide a complete, current package list that fits every distribution. Do not apply a universal apt-get install recipe copied from an unrelated image. Identify your distribution, base image, and the exact missing-library or sandbox message first, then use that distribution’s maintained package documentation.
Sandbox and service environments
Containers, CI runners, and hardened service accounts can impose sandbox or permission restrictions. The correct remedy depends on the exact launch error and your security policy. Avoid adding browser flags merely because a generic snippet suggests them; disabling a sandbox can reduce isolation and may not address the actual missing dependency.
Historical exit-code examples
A requests-html issue from 2018 records Chromium exiting with code 1 after download. It is useful for recognizing the distinction between “downloaded” and “started,” but it is not evidence of a current universal fix. Follow your installed versions and current traceback instead.

Check version and maintenance compatibility
The requests-html README states Python 3.6 and above, while the current pyppeteer repository describes Python 3.8 or newer for that repository version. Those statements refer to different project/version contexts; they do not establish that every requests-html release works with every pyppeteer release. Inspect your actual dependency versions and constraints:

python -m pip checkPyppeteer’s repository currently says, “This repo is unmaintained and has been outside of minor changes for a long time.” That maintenance status matters when a modern Python, Chromium revision, or Linux image exposes a new incompatibility. If you are starting a new project, evaluate whether continuing with this stack is appropriate; if you must keep it, pin and test the versions that work in your deployment.
Configuration variables: use only when the traceback points there
An older pyppeteer API reference documents these variables:

That reference is old. Verify that the variables are recognized by the pyppeteer version installed in your environment before changing them. Overriding a host or revision without a concrete reason can create a browser binary that the library does not expect.

- Install dependencies in the same image or virtual environment used at runtime.
- Run one render during deployment validation, not only an HTTP request.
- Ensure the runtime user can write to the configured pyppeteer directory.
- Persist the cache when the runtime is ephemeral, or deliberately download during each fresh startup.
- Capture the full traceback and Chromium stderr in logs.
- Record Python, requests-html, pyppeteer, operating-system, and container-image versions.
- Test a page that requires JavaScript, not just a static HTML page.

When to replace requests-html
Keep requests-html when your existing application depends on its API and you can control the browser runtime, cache, and versions. Consider another approach when you need a maintained browser stack, reproducible container builds, or a hosted capture service and cannot justify pyppeteer’s maintenance burden. Make that decision after measuring your deployment constraints, not by treating every “missing Chromium” message as the same defect.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does reinstalling requests-html always download Chromium?
No. The documented download is triggered by the first render call through pyppeteer. Reinstalling the Python package does not guarantee that the runtime can reach the download host, write its cache, or launch the resulting executable.
Why does the error appear only in Docker or CI?
Those environments may use a different user, home directory, filesystem, network policy, or system libraries. Re-run the minimal render test inside the failing environment and compare its versions and cache path with the working machine.
Should I set a custom Chromium revision immediately?
No. Investigate revision overrides only when the traceback or deployment explicitly indicates a revision problem, and verify the variable against your installed pyppeteer version.
