A failed Playwright screenshot comparison is usually a capture-consistency problem before it is a product bug. First inspect the expected, actual, and diff images; then make the baseline and test run use the same operating system, browser/runtime, settings, hardware conditions, and headless mode. Stabilize animations and hover state, and only then adjust pixel tolerances or update the snapshot for an intentional change.

Why is my Playwright screenshot test failing?

Visual assertions compare rendered pixels, so any difference in the rendering environment or page state can fail the test. Playwright specifically identifies the host operating system, versions, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode as variables. Its guidance is to run comparisons in the same environment that generated the baseline: Playwright visual comparisons.

Separate failures into three categories:

  • Environment variance: fonts, browser builds, operating-system rendering, device scale, or CI configuration differ.
  • Transient state: an animation, hover style, caret, late data, ad, or other changing content was captured at a different moment.
  • Real or accepted change: the UI genuinely changed, or a small rendering difference is harmless and can be expressed with a measured tolerance.

Do not run --update-snapshots until you know which category applies. Otherwise an unintended regression becomes the new expectation.

1. Read the failure artifacts before changing code

Open all three files produced by the test run: the expected snapshot, the actual screenshot, and the diff. A page-wide shift, different text rasterization, or changed font suggests an environment mismatch. A small region around a button suggests hover or dynamic content. A new component, missing image, or altered layout is more likely a real application change.

  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
  • Check whether the difference is global or localized.
  • Look for missing fonts, images, icons, or network responses.
  • Compare the URL, viewport, color scheme, locale, timezone, and device scale used to create the baseline.
  • Record the browser version and operating-system image for both runs.

Keep the artifacts with the failed CI job so reviewers can see what changed. A diff is evidence for choosing a remedy, not a reason to loosen the assertion automatically.

2. Reproduce the baseline environment

Choose one canonical environment for generating and checking snapshots. Pin the Playwright/browser version and use the same CI container or virtual-machine image for both operations. Do not create baselines on a developer laptop and compare them with a different operating system in CI unless you deliberately accept that rendering variance.

Environment checklist

  • Same host operating system and patch level.
  • Same Playwright package and browser binary versions.
  • Same headless or headed mode.
  • Same viewport, device scale factor, fonts, locale, timezone, and color scheme.
  • Same application build, seeded data, feature flags, and network fixtures.
  • Stable power and hardware conditions where rendering differences are possible.

If the baseline was created on the wrong platform, first review the application change, then regenerate snapshots in the canonical environment. Commit those reviewed files together with the intentional UI change.

3. Use Playwright’s stable screenshot assertion

For page comparisons, use Playwright Test’s await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). The assertion captures repeatedly until two consecutive screenshots match, then compares the settled image with the stored expectation. Page screenshot comparisons should use the Playwright Test runner; the API is documented in PageAssertions and the repository’s snapshot assertion documentation.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('landing page', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('/');
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('landing.png');
});

Make navigation deterministic before the assertion. Wait for the application state your test actually needs rather than adding an arbitrary long sleep:

  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
test('account page', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('/account');
  await page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Account' }).waitFor();
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('account.png');
});

The assertion disables animations by default. Finite animations are fast-forwarded; infinite animations are canceled for the capture and replayed afterward. That removes many timing failures, but it does not make application data deterministic.

4. Remove hover and other transient states

The mouse position can still activate a hover style. Move the pointer away from interactive content before capturing, as shown in Playwright’s visual-comparison guide:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
await page.mouse.move(-1, -1);
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('menu.png');

Alternatively, hover an element that has no hover effect. Also make test data stable: freeze or seed random values, use fixed dates, wait for the relevant API response, and avoid live advertisements or rotating content. Masking a truly dynamic region can be appropriate when that region is outside the purpose of the test, but masking should be an explicit test decision rather than a blanket fix.

When a wait is appropriate

  • Wait for a selector that proves the required UI is ready.
  • Wait for a specific response when the screenshot depends on that response.
  • Use a short delay only for a documented external transition that cannot expose a reliable readiness signal.

Do not use repeated sleeps to conceal a race; they make tests slower without guaranteeing identical pixels.

5. Tune comparison thresholds only after inspecting the diff

Playwright’s comparison uses pixelmatch’s perceived color difference in YIQ color space. The documented default color-difference threshold is 0.2. You can also limit the number or proportion of changed pixels with maxDiffPixels and maxDiffPixelRatio; see the TestProject configuration API.

A color threshold answers “how different may an individual pixel be?” A pixel-count limit answers “how many pixels may differ?” A ratio scales that allowance with image size. Start with strict settings, inspect a known harmless diff, and increase only the smallest value that accepts that documented variance. A tolerance that hides a one-pixel text change in a small component can hide a substantial defect when applied to a large page.

Choose the right remedy

Observed difference Likely cause Preferred action
Entire page has subtle color or text-rasterization changes Different OS, browser, fonts, or device settings Use the canonical environment and regenerate reviewed baselines
Only a button, tooltip, or menu differs Pointer hover or focus state Move the mouse, set focus deliberately, and capture the intended state
Animated region differs between runs Transient application state Use the built-in settled assertion and deterministic test data
Small, understood anti-aliasing variance remains Harmless rendering noise Apply a narrowly justified threshold or diff limit
Layout, copy, or component changed intentionally Approved product change Review and update the snapshot

6. Update snapshots only for an approved visual change

After confirming that the page change is intentional, run:

npx playwright test --update-snapshots

Review every changed image, check the diff into version control, and include the corresponding UI or test change in the same pull request. If the difference is unexplained, return to environment and state diagnostics instead of refreshing the baseline.

Common failures and fixes

“The screenshot is different only in CI”

Compare CI’s OS image, browser version, fonts, headless mode, viewport, and device scale with the baseline-generation job. Make both jobs use one pinned image and browser installation.

“The diff moves on every retry”

The page is not deterministic. Look for timers, animations, random IDs, current time, network data, ads, or hover. Seed the input, wait for a readiness condition, move the pointer away, or mask only a justified dynamic area.

“The assertion fails even though the page looks correct”

Open the pixel diff at full resolution. Text anti-aliasing or a tiny color shift may remain. Verify that the environment is already consistent, then use a minimal threshold or maxDiffPixels value tied to that known variance.

“The test captures a menu or tooltip unexpectedly”

The pointer or keyboard focus is activating it. Set the intended focus state explicitly, or move the pointer to (-1, -1) before the assertion.

“Updating snapshots fixed CI, but the change was not planned”

Revert the generated files and investigate. Updating snapshots is a release decision, not a repair for an unidentified failure.

Performance and reliability practices

  • Run visual tests against a local or controlled test server with fixed fixtures.
  • Reuse a pinned browser installation instead of allowing an unreviewed browser download to change between jobs.
  • Keep screenshot names and directories stable so a diff maps directly to a test.
  • Upload expected, actual, and diff artifacts on failure.
  • Use full-page captures when the requirement is page layout; use a targeted element assertion when only one component matters.
  • Keep tolerances close to zero for critical UI and document every exception in the test.

FAQ

Can I compare screenshots generated on different operating systems?

You can, but cross-platform rendering differences make failures harder to interpret. A single canonical environment gives the clearest signal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does toHaveScreenshot() wait for network idle?

No. It waits for two consecutive screenshots to match. Wait for the application condition your test needs; network-idle is not a universal indication that visual content is complete.

Should every screenshot test use maxDiffPixels?

No. Use a limit only when you can explain the harmless variance it permits. Otherwise retain strict comparison so real regressions remain visible.
