For a direct Playwright screenshot that should not vary because of motion, pass animations: 'disabled' to page.screenshot() or a locator’s screenshot() method. Direct screenshots otherwise allow animations by default. For Playwright Test visual assertions, toHaveScreenshot() already disables animations by default and waits for two consecutive screenshots to match.
Choose the right screenshot behavior
“Handle animations” can mean two different things: capture the page as it is moving, or make a screenshot stable enough to compare with a baseline. Playwright exposes both behaviors. A direct screenshot is a capture operation; a screenshot assertion is a test-runner check that also waits for visual stability.

Use animations: 'disabled' in the screenshot options. This works for a full page or a specific locator, so choose the narrowest capture that matches what you intend to inspect.

Runnable JavaScript example
Install Playwright with npm install playwright, then save this as capture.js. Run it with node capture.js. It navigates to a page, saves a full-page capture, and saves a separate element capture.

})();Replace the example URL and selector with the page and element you need. A locator screenshot captures that element rather than the whole page; the animation setting applies to the capture in either case. If you want normal animation behavior for one particular capture, set animations: 'allow' explicitly or omit the option, since allow is the direct screenshot default.
What “disabled” actually does
It does not simply freeze every animation at whichever frame happened to be on screen when capture began. Playwright treats finite and infinite animations differently:

transitionendevent, so application code listening for that event may run as part of the capture. - Infinite animations: Playwright cancels them to their initial state for the screenshot, then replays them afterward.
That distinction matters when the desired image is a particular intermediate state. Disabling motion is useful for stable endpoints, but it is not a request to preserve an arbitrary animation frame. If the test is specifically about an in-progress animation, leave it allowed and control the page’s state through the application or test setup rather than expecting disabled to select a frame.

Use screenshot assertions for visual regression tests
If the purpose is comparing rendered output against a baseline, use Playwright Test’s screenshot assertion rather than taking a direct screenshot and comparing files yourself. The assertion waits until two consecutive screenshots match before comparing, and its animations option defaults to disabled.

Install the test runner with npm install --save-dev @playwright/test. Save this as tests/home.spec.js and run npx playwright test.

});Screenshot assertions are a Playwright Test runner feature, not a method on a plain Playwright Page. The two assertion forms above compare a page and a locator respectively. If the assertion should preserve motion instead, supply { animations: 'allow' } in its options; otherwise its default is the stable, disabled behavior.
Reduced motion is a separate control
Playwright can also emulate the browser’s prefers-reduced-motion media feature. This is different from the screenshot operation’s animations option:

animations: 'disabled'specifies how Playwright handles animations for that screenshot or assertion.reducedMotion: 'reduce'emulates a media preference that page code and styles may respond to. The documented default is'no-preference'.
For example, set the preference in Playwright Test configuration when you want the application itself to render its reduced-motion experience:

The setting does not replace the screenshot option: choose both deliberately if you need the application’s reduced-motion styling and Playwright’s animation handling. The TestProject API and TestOptions API document the test configuration setting.
Why animated screenshots fail or differ
A visual test can vary when a direct screenshot catches an animated element at a different point in its cycle, or when a moving page has not yet settled into the expected rendered state. The direct screenshot default allows motion; a test that assumes it disables it without setting the option may therefore produce inconsistent images. For assertions, Playwright’s animation default and consecutive-match wait address those sources of variation, but they do not guarantee that every other part of a page is deterministic.
- Direct capture differs between runs: set
animations: 'disabled'for the shot if the final/static state is what matters. - Test needs the animated appearance: use
animations: 'allow'explicitly so the intent is clear. The captured frame can depend on when the screenshot occurs. - Expected transition callback does not run as expected: account for the fact that fast-forwarding a finite animation can fire
transitionend. - Looping animation changes after capture: infinite animations are canceled for the image and replayed afterward; do not treat the screenshot as a permanent alteration to the page.
- Reduced-motion styling is missing: check that the application actually defines behavior for
prefers-reduced-motion; emulating the preference alone does not create alternate styles. - Assertion still differs: first determine whether the changing region is animated or whether some other page state is changing. The assertion’s animation default only addresses animation handling; it does not establish that all application content is identical.
Performance, repeatability, and cost
Playwright’s documented handling for finite animations fast-forwards them, while infinite animations are canceled for the capture and replayed after it. That behavior helps avoid waiting through a complete animation cycle simply to obtain a static endpoint. Screenshot assertions additionally wait for consecutive matching images, so that stability check is part of the assertion workflow rather than a general guarantee attached to every direct screenshot.

For repeatable visual tests, make the choice based on the behavior under test: disable animation for static baselines, allow it when motion itself is the subject, and use reduced-motion emulation only when the site’s response to that preference is being tested. The cited Playwright documentation describes API behavior but does not publish a benchmark or numeric performance guarantee for these settings.
Playwright itself is browser automation you run in your environment; the cited API documentation does not state a per-screenshot fee. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture the exact middle frame of a Playwright animation with `animations: ‘disabled’`?
No. Disabled handling fast-forwards finite animations and cancels infinite ones to their initial state during capture; it is not an arbitrary-frame pause.
Does `reducedMotion: ‘reduce’` disable animations in the screenshot call?
No. It emulates the page’s reduced-motion media preference. The screenshot API’s separate `animations` option controls how Playwright handles animations during capture.
Does a direct `page.screenshot()` wait for two matching images by default?
No. The documented two-consecutive-match wait belongs to Playwright Test’s `toHaveScreenshot()` assertions.
