To control the image shown when someone shares a website link, add Open Graph tags to that page’s HTML <head>. Set an absolute og:image URL, along with og:title, og:type, and og:url. Add og:description and og:image:alt, then confirm that the social platform can fetch both the page and image.
What creates a website link thumbnail?
A link thumbnail is usually a social preview image selected from metadata on the shared page. The visible hero image in your article does not automatically become the preview image. The sharing service first retrieves the page, reads its metadata, downloads the referenced image and then builds its own card layout.
The standard mechanism is Open Graph. The protocol defines four required properties for a page: og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url. Most implementations also provide a description, site name and image details.

Add Open Graph tags to the page
Use the exact page URL
Place the tags in the <head> of the page people will share, not only in the home page template. Use absolute HTTPS URLs so a crawler does not have to resolve a relative path. The canonical URL and og:url should identify the same page version you want people to open.

Complete HTML example
<head>
<title>Page title</title>
<meta property="og:title" content="Page title">
<meta property="og:type" content="website">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/page">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/page-preview.jpg">
<meta property="og:image:alt" content="A concise description of the preview image">
<meta property="og:image:type" content="image/jpeg">
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
<meta property="og:image:height" content="627">
<meta property="og:description" content="A short description of this page.">
</head>
Replace every example value with content for the individual URL. Keep the title and description useful when they are displayed without the full page. The protocol says that when an image is declared, it should also have og:image:alt.
Understand the image properties
og:imageis the image URL that the platform should retrieve.og:image:altdescribes the image for accessibility and fallback contexts.og:image:typeidentifies the MIME type, such asimage/jpegorimage/png.og:image:widthandog:image:heightstate the image dimensions.og:image:secure_urlcan provide an HTTPS version when a separate secure URL is needed.
Open Graph permits repeated values. If conflicting values are present, the first value takes preference, so put the intended image and text first and remove accidental duplicates.
Choose and prepare the preview image
Make the image specific to the page
Use an image that represents the article, product or landing page being shared. A generic logo may identify your brand but gives a reader little context. Keep important faces, labels and text away from the outer edges because each platform can crop or resize the source into its own card shape.

See LinkedIn’s sharing image requirements for the platform’s current guidance. The page was marked as last updated two years before this article, so check it again if exact compliance is important.
Serve a retrievable file
The image URL must be reachable by the service fetching the preview. A protected directory, login wall, firewall rule or blocked crawler can make a correctly sized image unusable. Return the image itself at the URL, with a correct image content type, rather than an HTML error page or an authorization redirect.
Publish metadata that crawlers can read
Inspect the final HTML
After deployment, request the public page and inspect its source or response HTML. Confirm that the Open Graph tags are inside <head>, contain the final values and are not being replaced by a default site-wide template. If your site renders metadata only after browser JavaScript runs, verify the final output with the platform you care about; crawler execution of client-rendered metadata is not identical across services.
Keep one authoritative set
CMS plugins, themes and SEO extensions can each emit their own Open Graph tags. Search the final HTML for every og: property and remove duplicate or contradictory entries. Because the first value wins when a property is repeated, a stale tag placed earlier in the document can override the image you intended.

Use correct page variants
Give each shareable article, product or campaign URL its own title, description, image and URL. If query strings create tracking variants, decide which canonical page should own the preview and set og:url consistently. Do not point every page at the same home-page image unless that is genuinely the desired experience.
Account for platform differences
Open Graph is a common protocol, but platforms may support different fields, fallbacks, card layouts, crop rules and cache lifetimes. A preview that looks correct in one app is not proof that another app will render it identically. Compare services on five practical axes: which metadata they read, accepted dimensions and file weight, cropping and card layout, crawler access, and how they refresh cached previews.
Apple’s TN3156 on rich previews for Messages identifies og:image as relevant, but it does not establish that Messages uses every Open Graph field in the same way as other services. Test the apps your audience actually uses rather than promising one universal result.
Test a link thumbnail before announcing a page
- Deploy the page and image at their final HTTPS URLs.
- View the raw HTML and verify the required Open Graph properties and the intended first image value.
- Open the image URL directly from a private or unauthenticated browser session. It should return the image without a login prompt or redirect loop.
- Submit the page to the target platform’s current preview or inspection tool, if that platform provides one.
- Check the rendered card on a phone and desktop. Look for text cropping, an incorrect page title, a missing image or an old cached version.
Platforms cache fetched metadata. If an inspector offers a re-fetch or refresh action, use it after changing the tags; otherwise allow for the platform’s own cache policy and test with the exact URL that readers will share.

Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect thumbnail
No image appears
- Cause: No
og:imageexists on the shared page, or it is outside the HTML head. Fix: add the absolute image URL to that page’s head and inspect the deployed source. - Cause: The crawler cannot retrieve the image because of authentication, a protected directory, robots or network filtering. Fix: make the intended file publicly fetchable and test the URL without your logged-in session.
- Cause: The URL returns an error document or an unsupported response instead of the image. Fix: check the response, redirect chain and image content type.
The wrong image or title appears
- Cause: A theme or plugin emits duplicate Open Graph tags earlier in the document. Fix: remove duplicates and leave one authoritative value for each property.
- Cause: You edited one URL but shared another path, redirect or query-string variant. Fix: inspect the exact URL being shared and align its
og:urland metadata. - Cause: The platform is showing a cached fetch. Fix: use its current official re-fetch tool when available, then test the final URL again.
The image is cropped or reduced to a tiny card
- Cause: The source ratio does not suit the platform’s card layout, or key content is too close to an edge. Fix: create a crop-safe composition with generous margins and verify it on the target platform.
- Cause: The image falls below a platform’s documented size threshold. Fix: export a larger source; for LinkedIn, use at least 1200 × 627 pixels and stay within its 5 MB limit.
Changes never appear
Check that the new tags are present in the public response rather than only in a local build. Then request the page through the platform’s official inspection workflow, if one exists. Do not assume that changing the visible hero image changes the social metadata.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Performance, reliability and accessibility considerations
- Keep the preview file reasonably sized while meeting the target platform’s documented dimensions; large downloads slow crawler retrieval and can hit file-size limits.
- Use stable, versioned image URLs when you need deterministic previews. Changing the bytes at an unchanged URL may leave older cards in a platform cache.
- Preserve meaningful
og:image:alttext. It should describe the visual content, not repeat a filename or keyword list. - Set titles and descriptions per page so a shared card remains understandable when the image is hidden or fails to load.
- Retest after changing a CDN, access-control rule, redirect, domain or image format. A metadata edit cannot help if the fetch path has become inaccessible.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It can capture a clean PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one request, which is useful when you need a generated image of a rendered page rather than a manually designed Open Graph asset. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
Use the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all parameters. Basic calls:
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/page -o preview.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com/page"},
timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("preview.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com/page' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const data = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('preview.webp', data));
For an automated thumbnail pipeline, ScreenshotNeo also supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, element selection by CSS selector, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, click actions, waits, ad or tracker blocking, custom headers and cookies, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it.

FAQ
Is an Open Graph image the same as a website’s featured image?
Not necessarily. A featured image is page content managed by your site; og:image is explicit sharing metadata. Set both when you want the same visual, and verify the final HTML.
Can I use a relative image path?
Use an absolute URL such as https://example.com/images/share.jpg. It removes ambiguity for services fetching the page outside a normal browser session.
Will one thumbnail look identical in every app?
No guarantee exists. Services can apply different fallbacks, crops, card layouts and cache behavior, so validate the platforms that matter to your audience.
Should every page use the same og:type?
Choose the type that describes the page according to the Open Graph protocol and keep the value consistent with that page’s purpose. The protocol’s basic metadata still requires the type property.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a social platform ignore my Open Graph image?
Yes. A platform may use its own fallback or fail to fetch the URL. Confirm crawler access and test the exact service with its current official tools.
Does changing an image file update old shared cards?
Not reliably. Cached previews can outlive the file change; use a platform re-fetch workflow when available or publish a versioned image URL.
