There is no single correct website thumbnail size: a website card, social link preview, feed image, and video thumbnail are different placements. Choose the destination and aspect ratio first, then export at the platform’s recommended resolution and check how it crops. For YouTube, current Help guidance recommends 3840×2160 px (16:9) for standard video thumbnails and 2160×3840 px (9:16) for Shorts; common social-preview sizes are useful starting points, not guaranteed current requirements.
Start by identifying the thumbnail’s destination
“Website thumbnail” can mean several things: an image displayed in a card on your own site, a preview when someone shares a link, a video-platform thumbnail, or a social post image. They do not share one universal size. A 16:9 video preview, a 9:16 vertical video, and a 2:3 Pinterest pin have different shapes, and forcing one into another can crop important content or leave unused space.
Before creating the image, answer three questions:
- Where will it appear? Name the specific placement, such as a YouTube video thumbnail, Facebook link preview, or Instagram portrait feed post.
- What shape does that placement use? Decide the aspect ratio before settling on pixel dimensions.
- How is the image supplied? Some platforms accept an uploaded thumbnail; a website or search feature may fetch an image from page metadata or a video sitemap.
When a platform publishes a current specification for the exact placement, follow it. Secondary size charts can help you plan, but they can combine different placements and recommendation types. The cross-platform figures below are working references, not confirmed official requirements for every platform.
Common platform thumbnail dimensions
| Platform and placement | Working export size | Aspect ratio | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube video thumbnail | 3840×2160 px recommended by current YouTube Help | 16:9 | Older common guides often list 1280×720 px. Use YouTube’s current guidance for the target workflow. |
| YouTube Shorts thumbnail | 2160×3840 px recommended by current YouTube Help | 9:16 | Vertical format; account for how the thumbnail may appear in different surfaces. |
| Instagram square feed image | 1080×1080 px | 1:1 | A common reference for square feed posts, not portrait posts or Stories/Reels. |
| Instagram portrait feed image | 1080×1350 px | 4:5 | A commonly cited portrait feed size. |
| Instagram Stories/Reels or TikTok vertical video | 1080×1920 px | 9:16 | A starting export size; verify safe areas and overlays for the intended placement. |
| Facebook link preview | About 1200×630 px | About 1.91:1 | A commonly cited link-card size, not a universal Facebook image requirement. |
| X post image | About 1200×675 px | 16:9 | Other sizes are also published in secondary guides; check the intended post or card behavior. |
| LinkedIn post image | About 1200×627 px | About 1.91:1 | Do not confuse a post image with a LinkedIn page banner. |
| Pinterest standard pin | About 1000×1500 px | 2:3 | A tall pin shape, distinct from a link preview or video thumbnail. |
The social-platform figures in this table are secondary-source working references from OToolbox’s June 16, 2026 guide and Digital Marketing Agency’s June 23, 2026 guide. They do not establish official current requirements for every listed placement. Consult the platform’s current help for the exact placement before production.

How to choose dimensions without losing the subject
Set the aspect ratio first
Aspect ratio describes the image’s width-to-height relationship. It determines the canvas shape, while pixel dimensions determine its resolution. For example, 1200×630 and 2400×1260 are both approximately 1.91:1; the latter has more pixels but the same shape. Choose the shape that matches the destination, then use the recommended resolution or a larger export where the platform permits it.
Keep important content inside a safe area
Place faces, logos, and essential text away from the outer edges. A platform may crop an image to fit a card, show it at a different size on mobile, or place interface elements over it. Review the rendered image at the actual placement and on a narrow screen where possible. A crop that looks harmless on a desktop can cut off a title or subject on mobile.

Do not reuse a size just because it is familiar
A 16:9 export can be a reasonable starting point for a video preview, but it is not interchangeable with a vertical video, square feed post, or tall pin. Make a separate crop for materially different placements rather than shrinking or stretching one image to fit all of them.

YouTube Help currently recommends 3840×2160 px (16:9) for standard video thumbnails, with a minimum width of 640 px. It recommends 2160×3840 px (9:16) for Shorts thumbnails and a square image for podcast playlists. The same guidance describes upload limits that differ by device, so check the current YouTube Help page for the workflow you will use rather than relying on an older size chart.

There is also a display exception for vertical videos: YouTube says a 16:9 thumbnail can be replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. Keep essential text and the main subject clear in a central area so a tighter crop is less likely to remove them. This is a display behavior, not a reason to treat 4:5 as the general thumbnail upload ratio.
YouTube Help states, “Fun fact: 90% of the best-performing videos have custom thumbnails.” The cited Help passage does not provide a study citation or methodology, so treat that as YouTube’s statement rather than an independently validated statistic.

Website link previews and Google video thumbnails are different jobs
For a link card, provide the right page image
A social link preview is typically generated from information on the page, including an image URL in its metadata. The image is not the same thing as a user-uploaded video thumbnail, and the platform’s crop and rendering rules can differ. A size around 1200×630 px is a commonly cited working reference for Facebook link previews, but it should not be called a universal standard or assumed to be an official current requirement for every network.

Google Search Central says, “To be eligible to appear in video features, a video must have a valid thumbnail image.” Its guidance is specifically about video features in Search, not every social preview or website card. Google documents a minimum image size of 60×30 px and says larger is preferred. The image must be available to Googlebot and Googlebot Images.

Google describes several places from which it may obtain video thumbnail information, including an HTML video poster, a video sitemap, structured data, and Open Graph. If you provide thumbnail URLs through multiple mechanisms, keep them consistent. Use a stable image URL that Google can fetch; a blocked or inaccessible image cannot serve as a reliable thumbnail for this purpose.
Export and implementation checklist
- Write down the exact placement. For example, “YouTube standard video thumbnail” or “Facebook link preview,” not merely “website image.”
- Confirm the current specification. Prefer the platform’s own help for requirements, upload constraints, and placement behavior. Treat cross-platform charts as reference values until confirmed.
- Create the canvas at the intended ratio. Do not stretch an image to force a different ratio; crop or compose a separate version.
- Export at the recommended pixel dimensions. Distinguish a minimum from a recommendation, and check file-type and upload-size limits in the platform’s current instructions.
- Inspect the crop at the final placement. Check mobile rendering, edge crops, overlays, and whether the subject or text remains legible.
- For Google video eligibility, verify access. Ensure Googlebot and Googlebot Images can fetch the image, and use consistent thumbnail URLs across the metadata mechanisms you provide.
ScreenshotNeo: capture a page as a thumbnail source
If you need a thumbnail based on a live webpage, a browser capture can provide the source image; it does not choose the correct social crop or replace a platform’s thumbnail requirements. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. Its clean-shot workflow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. See ScreenshotNeo for product details.
Or skip the browser setup
One GET request returns an image or PDF. This cURL example saves a WebP capture of a page; replace the target URL and supply your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
FAQ
Is 1200×630 px the universal website thumbnail size?
No. It is a commonly cited working reference for a Facebook link preview. A website card, video thumbnail, and other social placements can use different ratios and rules.
Can I use the same image for a video thumbnail and a social post?
You can reuse the underlying artwork, but make a crop for each placement when their aspect ratios differ. Check the final render for edge cropping and overlays.
Does Google’s 60×30 px minimum apply to every thumbnail?
No. Google documents it for video thumbnails used in its video features. It is not a universal minimum for social previews or website cards.
