To change the image shown when someone shares a website URL, replace that page’s Open Graph og:image value (or use your site builder’s Social Share control), publish the change, then refresh the target platform’s cached preview. A new image in your website dashboard does not automatically replace an image that Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp or another service already scraped.
The three-step answer
- Set the image. For a builder, use the page-level social-sharing image or the site-wide default. On a custom site, edit the page head and set an absolute URL in
og:image. - Publish. A saved draft is not necessarily visible to crawlers. Publish the page or site so the metadata and image can be fetched publicly.
- Refresh the preview. Test the exact URL on the service where it will be shared. Use that service’s debugger or re-scrape control when it still shows an older image.
The image in an attached social post is a separate workflow. This guide changes the preview generated from a shared link.
Choose between a page image and a site-wide default
Use a page-specific image for one URL
A page-level image is the right choice for an article, product, campaign or landing page that needs its own visual. It overrides the general image when the platform accepts the page metadata. Make sure you test the canonical URL people will actually share, including the correct path, protocol and any required trailing slash.

A general social image gives pages without their own image a consistent default. It is useful for a small site or for pages where a custom graphic has not been prepared. It should not be confused with a browser favicon: a favicon appears in tabs and bookmarks, while a social image is fetched for a link preview.

Change the image in a website builder
Wix: page-level social image
- Open the Wix Editor.
- Open Pages & Menu.
- Open the page’s More Actions menu.
- Choose Social share and upload the image.
- Publish the site.
Wix’s dashboard labels can change, but the important distinction is that this is a page-level setting. The image will not be live for crawlers until the changed site is published.
Wix: site-wide general social image
- In the Wix dashboard, open Website Settings.
- Choose Site and Domain, then Website settings.
- Find General social image.
- Upload the default image, select Save, and publish.
Use the page-level control when one URL needs a unique graphic; use the general image as a fallback for the rest of the site.
Squarespace
Squarespace’s social-sharing logo represents the site as a whole rather than providing the same page-specific workflow documented for Wix. If Facebook continues to show an old image, Squarespace’s troubleshooting guidance is to submit the URL to Facebook’s Debugger, inspect the Link Preview, and choose Scrape Again. A password-protected page may need to be temporarily accessible while Facebook refreshes it.

Other builders
Look for labels such as Social sharing, Social image, Open Graph image or Link preview in the page’s SEO or sharing settings. If the builder exposes only a site-wide image, it may not support a different image for each URL without custom metadata or an extension. Save and publish after changing the setting.
Set og:image on a custom site
The Open Graph protocol places metadata in the document head. Its four basic properties are og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url. For the image, use a complete, publicly fetchable URL, not a filesystem path or a URL that requires a login.
<head>n <meta property="og:title" content="Example article title">n <meta property="og:type" content="article">n <meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/articles/example">n <meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/example-share.jpg">n <meta property="og:image:type" content="image/jpeg">n <meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">n <meta property="og:image:height" content="630">n <meta property="og:image:alt" content="A concise description of the image">n</head>
The structured image properties are optional enhancements. The og:image:alt value should describe what the image contains; it is not a caption or a place to repeat the headline. Keep one canonical og:image value for predictable results, and verify that your template does not emit an old image tag before the new one.

Confirm the generated HTML
View the publicly served page source, not only the editor preview, and search for og:image. Check that the URL is absolute, uses the intended protocol, and points to the new file. If your site renders metadata with JavaScript, confirm that the target crawler can receive the final head markup; a server-rendered or statically generated tag is generally easier to inspect.
Recommended Free Tools
Prepare an image that survives platform resizing
Wix recommends a 1200 × 630 pixel image, a 1.91:1 aspect ratio and a maximum file size of 8 MB. It says images below 600 × 315 pixels may appear small. These are Wix recommendations, not a universal guarantee for every network. Keep important text and faces away from the extreme edges because individual services may crop the preview differently.
- Use the right file URL. The image must be reachable without a password, expiring signature or interactive consent step.
- Keep the file within the target service’s limits. Wix notes that WhatsApp may display the preview image only when it is under 300 KB; treat that as WhatsApp-specific guidance, not a general requirement.
- Export for the job. JPEG is often suitable for photographs, while PNG can preserve sharp text and transparency. The social platform, not the browser, decides the final crop and compression.
- Describe the image. Add useful
og:image:alttext when you control the head markup.
Publish, then refresh the platform’s scrape
After publishing, open the exact URL in each service’s inspection tool. Wix identifies Facebook Sharing Debugger, Twitter Card Validator, Pinterest Debugger and LinkedIn Post Inspector as examples. On Facebook, enter the URL, inspect the Link Preview, and select Scrape Again when the old image remains. A successful refresh updates what Facebook can fetch; it does not rewrite an already-created post that contains an image attachment.

Different channels apply their own selection criteria, so og:image is a strong signal rather than an absolute command. One service may use another image tag, a previously cached result or a platform-specific card field. Test on the destination service instead of relying only on your browser or the builder preview.
Troubleshooting an unchanged or incorrect preview
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The old image still appears | The service has a cached scrape. | Publish first, then submit the exact URL to the service debugger and use its re-scrape control, such as Facebook’s Scrape Again. |
| No image appears | The image URL is private, invalid, blocked or not publicly reachable. | Open the image URL in an unauthenticated browser session, check the URL in the live page source, and remove access restrictions or broken redirects. |
| The wrong page’s image appears | You tested a different URL, redirect target or canonical page. | Compare the shared URL, og:url, canonical link and final redirect. Refresh the final URL that users will share. |
| The image looks tiny or badly cropped | The asset is too small or the channel uses a different crop. | Start with Wix’s 1200 × 630 recommendation, keep key content inside a safe central area, and test the destination channel’s rendered preview. |
| WhatsApp shows no image | The file may exceed the platform-specific size guidance. | Try an image under 300 KB, as Wix recommends for WhatsApp previews, then share the URL again. |
| One network shows a different image | Channels use their own selection rules and caches. | Inspect that network’s card fields and debugger separately; do not assume one refresh updates every service. |
| The builder preview changed but social sites did not | The draft was saved but not published, or crawlers cannot fetch the page. | Publish, confirm the live HTML contains the new tag, ensure the page is accessible, and request a fresh scrape. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you need to verify how the published page actually renders, ScreenshotNeo can capture it through one API request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers; it does not replace setting og:image, but it gives you a repeatable check of the live result without configuring a headless browser. Cookie and consent banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

FAQ
Does changing og:image force every app to use it?
No. It is the standard Open Graph image signal, but each channel can apply its own selection rules, metadata support and cache lifetime.
Can I change the image in a post that was already published?
Changing the page metadata affects future scrapes. An existing post may retain the image it stored when the post was created, and an attached image follows the social network’s own editing rules.

Make the page and image publicly accessible while the target service refreshes its scrape, then restore access controls if appropriate. A crawler that cannot fetch the page cannot read its metadata.
