To simulate a webpage at a particular screen size, set a custom viewport width and height in your browser’s responsive or device mode. Use a device preset for a quick preview, but enter the exact dimensions when reproducing a reported issue. If a layout changes at a breakpoint, test just above and below it. A browser preview is an approximation—not proof that the page behaves identically on a physical phone or tablet.
Screen resolution and viewport size are not the same thing
People often say “screen resolution” when they want to know how a webpage will look at a certain size. For responsive layout testing, the useful controls are usually the webpage’s viewport width and height: the space the browser gives the page. Changing those dimensions lets you see whether content reflows, navigation collapses, or elements overflow.
A simulated viewport does not recreate every characteristic of a physical display or device. Browser interface elements can affect the space available to a page; a phone’s address bar and on-screen keyboard may change the visible area, for example. Touch input, device-specific form fields, operating-system behavior, and performance can also differ from a desktop preview. Chrome describes Device Mode as a “first-order approximation” of how a page looks and performs on mobile. (See Chrome DevTools’ Device Mode documentation.)

Choose dimensions that answer your question
Reproduce a reported problem
Use the width and height associated with the problem if you know them. A preset is only a convenient starting point; it may not match the available webpage area on the reporter’s device. If the problem occurs in landscape, set the landscape dimensions rather than relying on a portrait preview.
Find a responsive breakpoint
Inspect the page’s own CSS media queries, then test immediately on either side of a relevant breakpoint. A page can look fine at a popular preset and still fail at an intermediate width where a navigation bar wraps or a column becomes too narrow. In Chrome and Edge, breakpoint indicators can help you find and trigger the page’s breakpoints.

Check height-sensitive layouts
Do not change only the width when the issue involves a dialog, sticky control, fixed footer, or another element near the top or bottom of the visible page. Try the relevant height and orientation too. When an on-screen keyboard or browser controls are part of the problem, a desktop viewport preview may not reproduce the same available space.
Simulate a webpage size in Chrome
- Open the page you want to inspect, then open Chrome DevTools.
- Turn on the Device Toolbar. In its device selector, choose Responsive to set dimensions manually, or select a device-like preset for a quick preview.
- Enter the target width and height in the viewport controls, or drag the viewport handles. Chrome’s documented width presets include 320 px, 375 px, 425 px, 768 px, 1024 px, 1440 px, and 2560 px. Treat these as interface presets, not universal breakpoint recommendations.
- To inspect responsive rules, open the Device Toolbar’s More options menu and show media queries. Chrome marks
max-widthandmin-widthbreakpoints; click a marker to trigger that breakpoint. - Check the page at the target size and at nearby widths if you are tracking a layout change. Rotate the emulated view or enter landscape dimensions if orientation matters.
Chrome’s documentation explains the limits of desktop emulation: mobile CPU architecture and other device characteristics cannot all be reproduced on a desktop. Use a real device or remote debugging when those differences matter. See Simulate mobile devices with Device Mode.
Use responsive design mode in Safari, Firefox, or Edge
| Browser | Open the responsive view | Set or inspect the size | Useful qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Safari | With the page focused, choose Enter Responsive Design Mode from the Develop menu. | Choose a viewport preset, or drag the viewport edges and corners to set a custom size. | Apple notes that browser interface elements and device-specific form-field behavior can affect a layout. See Apple’s Responsive Design Mode documentation. |
| Firefox | Open Responsive Design Mode from the Browser Tools menu. | Drag the bottom-right corner to resize the viewport. Enable touch simulation when testing touch-related behavior. | Device-profile behavior can change the browser identity presented by the emulation. Confirm platform-specific behavior in the actual target browser. See Firefox Responsive Design Mode documentation. |
| Microsoft Edge | Open DevTools and turn on the Device Toolbar to enter Responsive Viewport Mode. | Drag the viewport to the target dimensions. Breakpoint bars appear above the viewport when the page has min-width or max-width media-query breakpoints. |
Use the bars to inspect the page’s breakpoints, then verify the actual target browser if device-specific behavior matters. See Microsoft Edge device emulation documentation. |
These built-in modes offer different conveniences, such as Firefox touch simulation or breakpoint indicators in Chrome and Edge. The cited documentation does not establish that one browser’s emulation is more accurate overall.

A reliable breakpoint-testing procedure
- Record the failing dimensions. Write down the viewport width and height where you see the problem, along with the browser and whether the view is portrait or landscape.
- Set the same viewport. Use responsive mode and custom dimensions rather than assuming a device preset has the same usable webpage area.
- Find the relevant CSS rule. In Chrome or Edge, use the media-query indicators. In the page’s styles, look for the rule that changes layout near the failing width.
- Test either side of the change. Reduce or increase the width around the breakpoint. Watch for abrupt wrapping, clipped content, horizontal overflow, or a navigation change that leaves controls inaccessible.
- Check height and orientation where relevant. Repeat at the height or orientation that triggers the issue. If a keyboard or browser chrome is involved, check on the target device too.
- Validate important findings on real hardware. Emulation is useful for quickly iterating on layout, but it cannot certify every mobile-browser, touch, or performance behavior.
Common problems and what to check
- The page does not match the device preset. A preset is a device-like preview, not a guarantee that the webpage receives the same usable area as on physical hardware. Enter the dimensions you are trying to reproduce and confirm on the target device if exact behavior matters.
- The layout breaks between common sizes. Presets can miss intermediate widths. Inspect the site’s media queries and test immediately above and below the breakpoint instead of checking only a few popular sizes.
- The mobile page looks different despite matching width. Width alone does not reproduce browser controls, the on-screen keyboard, device-specific form fields, or all platform behavior. Recheck the height and use the actual target browser and device for a device-dependent issue.
- Touch interactions cannot be verified with the preview. Firefox provides touch simulation in Responsive Design Mode, but simulated input is not a substitute for checking the intended device when the interaction is important.
- You cannot see breakpoint indicators. In Chrome, open the Device Toolbar’s More options menu and show media queries. In Edge, breakpoint bars are displayed when the page has
min-widthormax-widthbreakpoints. These indicators depend on the page’s CSS rules; they are not a list of recommended sizes. - The problem appears only when scrolling or opening a keyboard. Test the affected interaction and height, not just the initial viewport. Browser interface elements and the on-screen keyboard can change the visible area on a physical device.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a clean screenshot at a webpage viewport rather than an interactive browser preview, ScreenshotNeo can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. It supports custom viewports and device presets; use the documentation for request options and output settings: ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The example saves a screenshot for the target URL; configure the viewport and output options using the API documentation. An API screenshot is useful for a repeatable capture, but it does not replace responsive DevTools when you need to interactively inspect breakpoints or test touch behavior.

Use responsive viewport mode to reproduce layout dimensions, find where CSS changes, and catch common wrapping or overflow problems quickly. Presets and custom sizes are both useful, but the page’s own breakpoints and the reported failure dimensions are more informative than a generic list of popular widths. If the result depends on a physical device’s browser UI, keyboard, input, form controls, or performance, validate it on that device and browser. Chrome explicitly cautions that Device Mode cannot reproduce every mobile characteristic, and Apple documents device and browser influences on responsive layouts.
