The right command depends on your operating system, desktop session, and the capture target. On GNOME, use gnome-screenshot; on a Wayland compositor, use grim (often with slurp); on Windows, Microsoft’s documented command-line route opens the interactive Snipping Tool overlay through an ms-screenclip: URI. These methods are not interchangeable, and Windows’ documented URI does not silently save an image to an arbitrary path.
Choose the command by environment
Before writing a script, identify three things:
- Session: GNOME on X11, GNOME on Wayland, another Wayland compositor, or Windows.
- Target: the whole display, one window, or a selected rectangle.
- Output: a file, standard output, or the clipboard.
A command that works in a GNOME/X11 session may fail in Wayland, and a compositor-specific tool may not work on another desktop. Check that the utility is installed and that your compositor supports the capture interface it requires.

GNOME: save a full screen, window, or area
When gnome-screenshot is installed, its documented options cover the common scripted cases. The following examples save PNG files in the current directory.

gnome-screenshot -f screenshot.pngThe -f option supplies the destination filename. Use an absolute path when a scheduled job or service may start in a different working directory, for example gnome-screenshot -f "$HOME/Pictures/nightly.png".

Active window
gnome-screenshot -w -f active-window.png-w captures the active window. Focus the intended window before running the command; a terminal launched by a script may become the active window instead.
User-selected area
gnome-screenshot -a -f selected-area.png-a starts area selection. This is interactive, so it is unsuitable for unattended jobs unless you replace it with a fixed geometry workflow or another capture tool.
Delay before capture
gnome-screenshot -d 3 -f delayed.png-d 3 waits three seconds. A delay gives you time to open a menu or move the pointer, but it also makes a script slower and can capture a different screen state than expected.

Clipboard and pointer options
The command reference also documents -c for copying to the clipboard and -p for including the pointer. Border and border-effect switches are deprecated in the cited manpage. Do not assume every Linux distribution installs this utility or gives it identical defaults. GNOME’s desktop screenshot interface may save to Pictures/Screenshots and copy to the clipboard, but that interface is separate from the file-oriented examples above.
Wayland: use grim, optionally with slurp
grim captures from a Wayland compositor. It is not a universal Linux screenshot command: the compositor must expose the required protocol, and the utility must be installed. The project’s GitHub repository is archived and says development moved elsewhere, so verify the maintained project location, installed version, and compositor compatibility before standardizing it.
Capture the default output
grim screenshot.pngCapture one monitor
grim -o DP-1 monitor.pngReplace DP-1 with the output name reported by your compositor. If the name is wrong, the command cannot select that display.

Capture fixed geometry
grim -g "10,20 300x400" region.pngThe geometry describes an origin and a size. Fixed geometry is useful in repeatable tests, but it assumes the same monitor arrangement, scale, and window layout every time.

Select a region interactively
grim -g "$(slurp)" selected-region.pngslurp supplies the rectangle; grim performs the capture. Both commands must be installed, and the compositor must support them.
Send image bytes to another command
grim - | wl-copyA filename writes an image to disk. A lone hyphen sends image bytes to standard output, allowing a pipeline such as wl-copy to place the result on the Wayland clipboard. Ensure the receiving command expects the image format emitted by your installed version.
Windows: launch Snipping Tool from a command
Microsoft documents the ms-screenclip: URI protocol for starting Snipping Tool capture. The image path requires exactly one mode parameter: rectangle, freeform, or window.

What about macOS?
macOS has built-in screenshot tooling, but the exact current command syntax and flags should be checked in the target system’s current Apple documentation or local manual. Availability and behavior can vary by macOS release. This guide therefore does not present unverified macOS switches as guaranteed commands.
Make command-line captures reliable
Use explicit paths and formats
Relative paths depend on the process’s working directory. Prefer an absolute destination and create the parent directory before capture. Use a filename extension that matches the format your tool writes, and check the exit status in scripts.
Account for focus and interaction
Active-window and area modes require a human state: focus, pointer position, and a selection gesture. They are appropriate for ad-hoc terminal use, not for unattended CI. Full-output or fixed-geometry commands are more deterministic, provided the display layout is stable.
Consider display servers and permissions
Wayland intentionally restricts arbitrary screen reads, so a compositor-approved utility such as grim is required. A GNOME command may fail when run from a headless SSH session because there is no graphical display or session bus. Run the command inside the logged-in graphical session, or use a capture service designed for remote rendering.
Keep monitor layouts stable
Coordinates and output names can change after docking, unplugging a monitor, changing scale, or rotating a display. If a script depends on DP-1 or a fixed rectangle, validate the layout first and fail clearly when it has changed.
Troubleshooting common failures
“command not found”
The package is missing or the executable is not on PATH. Install the utility from your distribution’s trusted package source, then verify with command -v gnome-screenshot, command -v grim, or command -v slurp.

“cannot open display” or a blank image
The process may be outside the graphical session, connected to the wrong display, or blocked by the display server. Run it from the active desktop session and check the relevant session environment. On Wayland, use a compositor-supported capture tool instead of an X11-only workflow.
grim reports compositor or protocol errors
Confirm that you are actually running Wayland, that the compositor supports the protocol grim needs, and that your installed grim build matches the compositor. Check current project status because the original GitHub repository is archived.
slurp selection fails
Install both utilities and test slurp alone. If no selection rectangle appears, the compositor may not support the required layer-shell behavior, or the command may be running outside the graphical session.
The Windows URI opens nothing
Check the Windows version and Snipping Tool availability, and ensure the URI contains exactly one valid mode parameter. The documented URI launches an overlay; it does not provide a path to an output file.
The file exists but is empty or incomplete
Check disk permissions and free space, then inspect the command’s exit status. In pipelines, preserve failures with shell error handling so a downstream command cannot hide a capture error.
