There is no reliable, universally safe list of Chrome flags that makes Chrome faster. Flags are temporary experiments, not supported speed settings, and Google warns that changing them can break features or risk browser data, security, and privacy. Start with Chrome’s built-in Performance settings and basic troubleshooting; consider a flag only for a specific, documented reason that applies to your Chrome version and device.

Why a list of “fast Chrome flags” is hard to trust

Chrome flags are experimental controls at chrome://flags. Their names, availability, behavior, and platform support can change between Chrome releases. Google says flags “may change, break, or be removed in the future without notice,” and that “Most users shouldn’t need to modify Chrome flags.” A flag that appears in an old speed tip may be gone, have a different effect, or be unsuitable for your device.

There is also an important distinction between a browser setting and a proven performance improvement. The official Google guidance reviewed here does not establish a current, cross-platform list of flags shown to make stable Chrome faster. So a confident list of universal toggles—or percentage speed claims—would overstate what is known. Google’s standard advice is to use supported performance controls and address common sources of slowdown first.

Flags can still be useful when you have a specific experimental feature to test. Read the description shown beside the flag, check that it applies to your device, and change only one setting at a time. Do not treat an experimental flag as a permanent optimization.

Try Chrome’s supported Performance settings first

On desktop Chrome, open More (the three-dot menu) > Settings > Performance. The useful choice depends on whether your bottleneck is memory, battery life, or the time it takes to open likely next pages.

Setting What it is for Trade-off to consider
Memory Saver Deactivates inactive tabs to free memory; a tab reloads when you return to it. Tabs may need to reload. Choose among Moderate, Balanced (recommended), and Maximum; higher savings deactivate tabs sooner.
Energy Saver Extends battery life by reducing image capture rate and other background work. It may affect video or gaming performance. It is available on Windows, Mac, and Chromebook devices with a battery, and operates when the device is unplugged or its battery is low.
Preload Pages Preloads pages Chrome thinks you may visit, to make browsing and searching faster. Preloading uses data and has privacy implications: it may use cookies, and Google says pages may be encrypted and sent through Google to hide your identity from sites. Review the Standard and Extended choices in Settings.

Some activity can prevent Memory Saver from deactivating a tab. Google lists active media, calls, screen sharing, downloads, partially completed forms, pinned tabs, and connected devices among the examples. That behavior is intentional: a tab doing work or holding an in-progress task may remain active.

These settings are not personalized through the same Performance controls on mobile devices running iOS or Android. Do not assume desktop instructions or flags apply the same way on a phone.

Find the cause of slowness before changing experiments

  1. Update Chrome. Google recommends using the latest version. Open More > Help > About Google Chrome to check for an update; follow the prompt to relaunch if one is installed.
  2. Close tabs you are not using. Many open tabs can consume resources, especially if pages continue doing work in the background.
  3. Review extensions. Disable or remove extensions you do not need. If performance improves, re-enable extensions selectively to identify whether one is contributing to the problem.
  4. Inspect Chrome Task Manager. Open More > More tools > Task Manager, sort by the memory column, and look for tabs or background pages using substantial memory. Ending a task can lose unsaved work, so check the page before selecting it and choosing End process.
  5. Match the Performance setting to your goal. Try Memory Saver if memory pressure is the issue, Energy Saver if battery life is the priority, or Preload Pages if you want likely destinations to open sooner. Consider the reload, smoothness, data, and privacy trade-offs before enabling a setting.
  6. Only then consider a flag. Use one experimental setting for a specific documented reason, relaunch when Chrome asks you to, and compare the same kind of work before and after. This is a cautious testing method, not a guarantee of improvement.

The documented Hyper-Threading flag is a narrow exception

Google Chromebook Help documents Scheduler Configuration at chrome://flags#scheduler-configuration for Hyper-Threading on Chromebooks with relevant CPUs and ChromeOS version 74 or later. This is not a general Chrome speed flag, and the documentation does not establish that every current Chromebook exposes the option or that turning it on makes Chrome faster.

Google says Hyper-Threading is off by default because it may pose a security risk. It also notes that some users may notice slower performance in some apps and games. Do not enable it simply because an online list calls it a speed boost. If you are considering it, confirm that the setting is present on your Chromebook, understand the security trade-off, and follow current guidance for your device and organization.

How to test a flag and undo it safely

  1. Enter chrome://flags in Chrome’s address bar.
  2. Find the exact flag and read its on-page description. Do not infer what it does from its name or a guide written for another release.
  3. Change only that flag, using the available option, and select Relaunch if Chrome displays the prompt.
  4. Use the same sites and workload you used before the change. If the result is worse or something stops working, return to chrome://flags.
  5. Select Reset all, then relaunch Chrome. This returns flags to their default state.

Google warns that changing flags can cause you to lose browser data or compromise security and privacy. If you want to experiment with features before they reach regular Chrome, Google points users to Chrome Beta and its feedback process; beta software is for testing, not a substitute for diagnosing a slow stable installation.

Or skip the browser setup

If your actual task is capturing a clean screenshot of a web page—not speeding up Chrome itself—you can make one request to ScreenshotNeo, a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its response can be a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, and its documented options include full-page capture, CSS selector capture, device presets, custom CSS and JavaScript, and waits for page conditions. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.

Common problems and what to do

A flag from a guide is missing

Flags can be removed or changed without notice, and a flag may be limited to a particular platform or Chrome release. Do not look for a substitute with a similar name; use supported Performance settings or consult current documentation for the exact feature and device.

Chrome behaves oddly after a flag change

Return to chrome://flags, choose Reset all, and relaunch. If you changed more than one flag, resetting all is safer than trying to remember which combination caused the problem.

Tabs reload when you return to them

That is expected when Memory Saver deactivates inactive tabs. Choose a less aggressive level, or reconsider enabling it if preserving a tab’s current state matters more than freeing memory.

Video or games feel less smooth on battery

Energy Saver reduces image capture rate and background work, and Google notes it can affect video or gaming performance. Review the Energy Saver setting when smooth playback or gaming matters more than extending battery life.

Pages open more quickly, but you have privacy or data concerns

Review Preload Pages in Settings > Performance. Preloading can use cookies and data; Google describes privacy measures that may route encrypted pages through Google to hide identity from sites. Choose a preloading level that fits your preferences, or turn it off if the trade-off is not acceptable.

Practical recommendation

For most people, the safest path is to update Chrome, reduce unnecessary tabs and extensions, identify resource-heavy processes, then select a supported Performance setting that matches the problem. Treat flags as temporary experiments for a narrow, documented purpose—not as a dependable list of speed switches. If a flag causes trouble, reset all flags and relaunch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Chrome flags apply to Chrome on Android or iPhone?

The desktop Performance personalization controls described here are not available for personalization on iOS or Android. Flag availability and behavior can also vary by platform, so do not assume a desktop flag guide applies to mobile Chrome.

Can I use Chrome Beta to try experimental features?

Google recommends Chrome Beta for testing experimental features before they reach Chrome and for sending feedback. Treat it as a testing channel rather than a guaranteed performance fix.
