Test a screenshot capture API as both an HTTP service and a rendering system. Verify authentication, request and response semantics, decode the returned image, and inspect its dimensions and content; then exercise capture options, page-state edge cases, and failures using controlled fixtures. A 200 response alone does not prove the screenshot is correct.

Build a reliable test fixture before calling the API

Use pages you control rather than relying only on arbitrary live websites. A fixture makes the result repeatable and gives you known content and geometry to verify. Create cases for:

  • A simple static page with a distinctive heading and a known background color.
  • A long page with stable landmarks near the top, middle, and bottom.
  • An image or element that loads only after scrolling into view.
  • An element that appears after a delay, plus a selector that never appears.
  • A hidden element and, if relevant, a selector that matches multiple elements.
  • A page with animation, hover-dependent styling, or a sticky header.

Record expected viewport dimensions and a few visual landmarks for each fixture. These fixtures are test-design recommendations, not vendor benchmarks. Keep the page content stable during a test run; otherwise a difference may reflect a changed fixture rather than a change in capture behavior.

Verify the HTTP contract and the actual image

For each request, test the method and endpoint, authentication, status code, response content type, and body. Decode the body as the expected image format and check that it is non-empty, has the expected dimensions, and contains visible fixture landmarks. If a provider documents an error schema, assert its status and body for negative cases rather than treating any non-image response as an unexplained failure.

Do not assume every unsuccessful-looking page is a failed capture. A screenshot of a target site’s own access-denied or 403 page may be a valid capture; Browserless explicitly notes that such pages can be captured in its Screenshot API documentation. Distinguish the API’s capture result from the content the target site chose to serve.

Provider contracts differ. Browserless documents a POST screenshot endpoint that returns an image response. ScreenshotOne says its API follows HTTP status-code semantics and returns JSON for conditions including internal errors, invalid options, and reached limits. Build assertions against the chosen provider’s current contract, not a status or error format assumed to be universal: ScreenshotOne Getting Started.

Test capture options as observable behavior

An accepted request parameter is not proof that an option works. For every option your application depends on, assert a visible or measurable change in the output.

Viewport, format, scale, and clipping

Capture a viewport image and check its pixel dimensions. Vary width and height, then test each supported output type and any quality setting. Where available, test device scale factor or retina output and assert the resulting dimensions and clarity. For clipped screenshots, verify that the returned image corresponds to the requested rectangle and that content outside it is excluded.

Browserless documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP output, full-page capture, clip regions, viewport, scale factor, and element selection; check its current endpoint documentation for the precise request fields and semantics.

Element and selector captures

Test a visible element, a nonexistent selector, an existing but hidden element, and an element that appears after a delay. If selectors can match more than one element, include an ambiguous-selector case where relevant. Assert the documented outcome for each: an image of the intended element, a timeout, or a specific error. ScreenshotOne documents selector error behavior and selector scrolling in its Screenshot Options; Playwright’s relevant locator operations have strict matching behavior described in the Page API reference. Do not infer another provider’s behavior from either one.

How to test full-page screenshots and lazy-loaded content

A full-page response can be successful yet omit below-the-fold content. On your long-page fixture, compare viewport mode with full-page mode and check that lower landmarks and lazy-loaded images appear. Repeat with a different viewport height if supported: a shorter viewport can require more scrolling, potentially triggering lazy content, but may also take longer.

Inspect full-page images for missing sections, seams, or duplicated regions, especially where the page has sticky headers, animations, or content that changes while scrolling. Capture algorithms vary. ScreenshotOne documents both a simple full-page method and a section-by-section method, notes that scrolling is enabled by default in full-page mode unless overridden, and warns that some pages can still fail. Its full-page screenshots guide discusses viewport dimensions and scrolling in relation to page loading. Use the options documented by your own provider and validate the actual result.

Control timing, motion, and page state

Make readiness explicit. Prefer waiting for an application signal or target element that indicates the page is ready over relying only on a fixed sleep. Include client-side rendering, delayed fonts and images, and finite or looping animations in fixtures. ScreenshotOne documents delay and motion-reduction controls, but notes that custom JavaScript animations, canvas, and animated images may remain variable even with motion reduction enabled; see its options documentation.

Set pointer position deliberately. Playwright’s visual comparison documentation notes that screenshots include hover effects present at capture time and demonstrates moving the mouse away to avoid them. For consistent results, establish the same pointer position and page state before each capture. Avoid assuming that a wait for network idle alone means the page is visually settled: a page can still animate or update after network activity ends.

Compare visual baselines without mistaking noise for regressions

Generate a baseline from a known-good build. For later runs, keep the browser build, operating system, settings, hardware class, headless mode, viewport, device scale, and page state consistent. Microsoft Playwright’s visual snapshot documentation warns: “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” See Playwright visual comparisons.

Choose tolerance based on what the test is meant to catch. Strict comparison can suit stable, isolated components; a tolerance can accommodate harmless antialiasing or rendering noise. Mask or hide clocks, rotating banners, random avatars, and live counts only when those regions are outside the behavior under test. Review baseline updates rather than automatically accepting every new image. Playwright documents reference screenshots, pixel-difference allowances, custom stylesheets, and snapshot updates in its visual comparison guide.

Test failures and operational behavior separately

Exercise invalid parameters and missing authentication, as well as unreachable pages, DNS or connection failures, navigation timeouts, missing selectors, oversized input, and service-side errors where applicable. For each, verify the provider-documented status, error code or message shape, and whether retrying is safe. A malformed request and a transient network failure should not be collapsed into the same test assertion.

For asynchronous or high-volume use, test cancellation, concurrency, and rate or size limits only when the provider documents them. There is no universal retry policy or shared set of limits across screenshot APIs. Check the current provider contract before encoding those assumptions.

Choose the test approach that matches what you need to validate

Approach What it tests well What you must control
Hosted screenshot API Remote authentication, transport, provider status and error behavior, and returned image bytes. Remote request options, provider limits, network conditions, and stable fixtures.
Direct browser automation Your browser workflow and capture settings, with finer control over browser context and page state. Browser and runtime versions and a consistent CI environment.

For either approach, validate the capture behaviors your product actually relies on: viewport, full page, clipping, element selection, formats, and lazy-load handling. Visual baselines remain environment-sensitive; see Playwright’s visual comparison guidance. If you use a hosted API, include its remote behavior in your tests; if you use automation directly, make browser/runtime maintenance part of the test setup.

Or skip the browser setup

You can test a hosted capture API with a single request and validate its response in your integration. ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request; its parameter names also work with those used by other screenshot APIs, which can make switching easier. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a lazy-loaded image missing from a full-page screenshot?

The page may request it only after scrolling or after a readiness condition that your capture did not reach. Reproduce the case on a controlled fixture, wait for the image or application signal, and verify the full-page scrolling behavior documented by your provider.

How can I compare screenshots in Playwright?

Keep the rendering environment and page state consistent, establish a baseline from a known-good build, and use Playwright’s visual comparison workflow. Its visual comparison documentation describes reference screenshots, thresholds, and updating snapshots.
