You authenticate with your BrowserStack username and access key, submit a screenshot job with its browser, device, viewport and timing settings, then receive the completed image list at a callback URL or retrieve it with the job-result request. API access is tied to Automate plans that include browsers; a Live-only subscription can use BrowserStack’s webpage Screenshots experience, not this API.
What the BrowserStack Screenshot API does
The API turns a URL into screenshots rendered by BrowserStack’s remote browser and device infrastructure. A single job can target desktop or mobile combinations, allowing you to generate reference images for compatibility reviews, documentation, release checks or visual evidence without maintaining your own browser machines.
This is different from the browser-based Screenshots page: the webpage workflow is available to Live-only subscribers, while the HTTP API requires an Automate subscription that includes browsers. It is also different from Percy, BrowserStack’s separate visual-testing product; Percy is not the endpoint described here.
Access and authentication requirements
Plan eligibility
- Use an Automate plan that includes browsers.
- Do not assume a Live-only subscription includes API access. Live-only users can use Screenshots through BrowserStack’s webpage.
- Plan names, limits and packaging can change, so verify your account’s current Automate entitlements before implementation.
Credentials
Each request is authenticated with the BrowserStack account username and access key. The official example uses HTTP Basic Authentication. Keep both values in environment variables or a secret manager; never commit them to source control or expose them in client-side JavaScript.

BrowserStack request workflow
- List supported combinations. Start with the API operation that lists available operating-system and browser combinations. Use its response to select versions that are currently offered to your account.
- Create a screenshot job. Send an authenticated POST request containing the target URL and the desired platform, browser and rendering options.
- Choose completion handling. Supply a callback URL for an asynchronous POST when the job completes, or retain the returned job ID and retrieve results with
GET /screenshots/<JOB-ID>.json. - Store the returned image URLs or metadata. Treat the callback or result response as the source of truth for completion; do not assume that submitting the job means the image is ready.
The exact host and operation paths are maintained in BrowserStack’s live API reference. Use those documented paths rather than copying an old endpoint from an example or blog post.
Request settings you can control
The API reference documents these fields. Availability can depend on the selected platform, so validate combinations against the configuration-list response.
| Setting | What it controls | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| URL | Page to render | Send a fully qualified URL that the remote browser can reach. |
| OS and OS version | Desktop or mobile operating system target | Examples in the reference include Windows, OS X, iOS and Android. |
| Browser and browser version | Browser engine and release | Select versions that appear in the account’s available-combinations response. |
| Device | Mobile hardware profile | Required when targeting a mobile device. |
| Orientation | Portrait or landscape mobile rendering | Required when a device is specified; portrait is the default. |
| Resolution | Desktop viewport size | The reference lists Windows and OS X resolution settings. |
| Quality | Screenshot output quality | Choose the level supported by the API reference for your request. |
| Local testing | Whether BrowserStack should reach a site through your local-testing setup | Configure and start BrowserStack Local separately before submitting a private URL. |
| Wait time | Delay before the capture | Documented examples are 2, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 60 seconds. |
| Callback URL | Where BrowserStack posts the completed screenshot listing | Use a publicly reachable HTTPS endpoint that can authenticate and validate incoming requests. |
Designing a reliable capture job
Choose coverage deliberately
Do not request every available combination by default. Define a support matrix first: for example, one or two desktop operating systems and browser versions, plus the mobile devices and orientations that your users actually need. This keeps result sets reviewable and avoids accidental expansion when BrowserStack adds configurations.
Wait for page readiness
Use a wait value when the page has animations, client-side rendering or delayed content. A fixed delay is simple but can be wasteful; choose the smallest documented value that consistently captures the finished state. For pages whose readiness varies, make the page itself expose a deterministic state before submitting the job, or repeat the capture with a longer documented wait.

Handle private sites
Enable the documented local-testing option only when your BrowserStack Local connection is active and the target hostname is routed through it. A public URL does not need local testing. If a private page fails, first verify that the local connector can reach the same hostname and port from the environment where it runs.
Use callbacks or polling
Callbacks are preferable for batches because your worker can process results as they finish. Return a fast 2xx response, authenticate the endpoint, record the job ID, and make processing idempotent. If inbound callbacks are not possible, poll the documented job-result request using the job ID until the API reports completion, then back off between attempts.
Result delivery and operational safeguards
Callback delivery
When you provide a callback URL, BrowserStack posts the completed screenshot listing there. Your endpoint should validate the request, persist the payload, acknowledge quickly and queue any image downloads or comparisons. Protect the callback with an authentication mechanism you control, such as an unguessable path plus request authentication at your edge.
Job-result retrieval
Without a callback, retrieve results with GET /screenshots/<JOB-ID>.json using the same account authentication. Keep the job ID with your application’s build or test identifier so a retry cannot attach an image to the wrong run.

Storage and retention
Download or copy images to storage you control if they are needed for audits or long-lived baselines. Keep only the metadata and retention period your policy requires, especially when screenshots contain customer or internal information.
Common problems and fixes
Authentication fails
Symptom: the request is rejected before a job is created. Fix: verify the username and access key pair, ensure Basic Authentication is being sent, remove accidental whitespace, and check that the account has an Automate plan with browsers.
The selected combination is rejected
Symptom: an OS, browser, version or device is reported as invalid. Fix: call the available-combinations operation first and copy supported values exactly. Do not infer availability from an old example.
Mobile request validation fails
Symptom: a device request is refused. Fix: include the required device field and specify orientation when a device is present. Portrait is the documented default, but explicitly sending it can make generated requests clearer.

The page is incomplete
Symptom: the screenshot shows a loading shell, missing images or an unfinished animation. Fix: increase the wait time to another documented value, make the page’s data-loading state deterministic, and confirm that required assets are reachable from the selected platform.
Local pages cannot be reached
Symptom: a public page works but a development hostname fails. Fix: start BrowserStack Local, enable the request’s local-testing option, and test DNS, ports and firewall rules from the connector host.
Callbacks never arrive
Symptom: the job completes but your application sees no callback. Fix: check that the URL is publicly reachable over HTTPS, inspect edge logs for non-2xx responses, accept the callback quickly, and fall back to job-result retrieval for the recorded job ID.

Cost and performance considerations
The reviewed BrowserStack material establishes plan eligibility but does not provide a stable numeric API price or performance guarantee. Check BrowserStack’s current pricing and account limits before budgeting. Control workload by limiting the matrix, using callbacks for batches, selecting an appropriate wait, and avoiding duplicate captures in your own queue. Treat each browser/device combination as a separate result that may complete independently.
BrowserStack or ScreenshotNeo?
Choose BrowserStack when your organization already standardizes on an Automate browser matrix and needs its documented OS, browser, device, resolution and local-testing controls. Choose ScreenshotNeo when a simple URL-to-image call, clean output, explicit billing verdicts or MCP access matters more. In either case, validate the current documentation and plan entitlement before shipping an integration.
