React Native does not turn Jest snapshots into rendered-image tests, and React Native Storybook’s testing guide does not provide visual testing as a built-in feature. A practical stack is Storybook plus Maestro for component states, or Detox screenshots inside end-to-end tests for full app flows. Percy can host a Storybook workflow driven by Appium when you want managed baselines and pull-request review.
What visual regression testing checks
A visual regression test answers a different question from a unit or accessibility test: “Did the pixels rendered for this known state change?” It can catch spacing shifts, clipped text, incorrect colors, missing icons, broken dark mode, z-index mistakes and changes that still leave the component tree valid.
Keep Jest snapshots as a complementary check. Jest serializes values to text; it does not compare screenshots or device pixels. See the Jest snapshot testing documentation for that distinction.
Choose a small, intentional set of states rather than capturing every navigation path. For a component library, include default, loading, error, disabled, long-content and important theme or accessibility variants. For an app, cover screens and transitions where layout regressions would be costly.

Choose the capture approach
| Approach | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Maestro + React Native Storybook | Repeatable screenshots of isolated stories on Android and iOS | You must add mobile automation and an image-comparison step; Storybook’s example is not an integrated visual-testing service. |
| Detox screenshots | Capturing a complete screen or a selected element during app-level end-to-end tests | An element crop is focused and often steadier, but can hide an overlap or surrounding layout defect. |
| Percy React Native Storybook | Hosted baselines, review and CI around Appium-driven simulator/emulator captures | Requires Percy and Appium setup; its repository documents local CLI mode and a separate BrowserStack App Automate library mode. |
| Chromatic | Cross-browser visual tests for web-rendered Storybook stories | Its documented snapshots are browser captures, not equivalent to native iOS and Android screenshots. |
| Jest snapshots | Detecting changes to serialized component output | Not a rendered-image or pixel comparison. |
These options are described in the React Native Storybook testing guide, Maestro’s React Native documentation, Detox screenshot documentation, Percy’s React Native Storybook setup and Storybook visual testing documentation.
Make rendering deterministic before capturing
Freeze application inputs
- Use fixed or seeded fixtures instead of production API responses.
- Set a known locale, timezone, color scheme, font scale and accessibility configuration.
- Disable or control network requests, random IDs, clocks and rotating content.
- Wait for images, fonts and asynchronous data to finish loading.
- Wait for animations to end. The Storybook example uses
waitForAnimationToEnd; Percy’s setup exposes ready and settle waits for rendering and image decoding.
Stabilize automation targets
Give important views and controls stable React Native testID values. Maestro notes that visible text is brittle when labels change or are translated. Use text only when the text itself is the behavior under test.
Normalize device chrome
Status-bar time, battery, network indicators and notifications are outside your app but can change pixels. Detox’s guide demonstrates simulator or emulator demo mode to control these values. Keep the simulator model, OS version, resolution, font scale and theme identical for baseline and candidate runs. This reduces environmental noise; it cannot make different rendering engines identical.
Run Storybook visual tests with Maestro
React Native Storybook’s documented flow is: install Maestro, start the app with Storybook, open a story by its story ID, wait for animation, assert that it is visible, and call takeScreenshot. Disable Storybook’s on-device UI if it would be included in the captured app content.

Example Maestro flow
appId: com.example.app
---
# For a standalone development build, launchApp can use your package/bundle id.
- launchApp
- tapOn:
id: "storybook-menu"
- tapOn:
text: "Button / Primary"
- waitForAnimationToEnd:
timeout: 1000
- assertVisible:
id: "button-primary-story"
- takeScreenshot: "button-primary-default"
Replace the identifiers and story navigation with your project’s actual controls. A story should expose a stable root testID and deterministic fixture data.
Expo Go versus a development build
Maestro supports React Native on Android and iOS, including Expo workflows. For Expo Go, its documentation says to open a development URL with openLink rather than launching a custom app ID. Standalone apps and EAS builds use their package or bundle identity. Follow the platform-specific examples in Maestro’s guide and substitute your own URL and identifiers.
Compare the captured file
Store one approved image per story, platform, simulator model and relevant theme. Your comparison job should produce a changed-pixel image and a pass/fail result. A simple local process is:
- Run the Maestro flow and write candidate images to a build directory.
- Match each candidate to its baseline using a deterministic filename.
- Fail when the comparison exceeds your chosen pixel-difference rule.
- Publish the candidate, baseline and diff as CI artifacts.
- Approve a new baseline only after a human confirms the UI change is intentional.
The Storybook guide includes a local screenshot-comparison example; it is an example implementation, not a promise of a built-in comparator. Storybook’s visual-testing documentation describes reviewing changed pixels and accepting intentional changes.

Capture app flows with Detox
Detox can capture the whole device or a selected element. Use a full-screen screenshot when composition, overlap, status-bar treatment or surrounding layout matters. Use an element screenshot when a focused component is the subject and the crop improves repeatability.
// JavaScript in a Detox test
await device.takeScreenshot('checkout-screen');
await element(by.id('price-card')).takeScreenshot('price-card');
Check the exact method signatures for your installed Detox version in the current screenshot guide. A selected-element image can miss an obstruction outside the crop, so pair component captures with at least a few full-screen checks.
Use Percy when you want hosted review
Percy’s React Native Storybook setup uses Appium to drive a simulator or emulator, captures stories, stores baselines and reports changes in CI. The repository documents both a local CLI mode and a BrowserStack App Automate library mode. It is useful when pull-request status, baseline approval and artifact hosting should be managed outside your own comparison scripts. You still need deterministic stories, stable device settings and waits for rendering.
Design baselines and CI deliberately
One baseline per rendering contract
Do not compare an iPhone baseline with an Android candidate or silently resize one device’s image to another. Name artifacts with platform, OS, model, orientation, theme, locale and story or screen ID. If your product intentionally supports several configurations, maintain separate baselines.

Review, don’t auto-approve
A changed image is evidence, not an automatic bug verdict. A deliberate redesign should update the baseline in the same pull request; an unexpected one should fail the check and send the change back to the author. Keep the diff beside the two source images so reviewers can distinguish a real UI change from a shifted crop or device-status artifact.
Run the same job locally and in CI
Use the same app build type, simulator or emulator image, scale, fonts, theme and fixture seed. Run on pull requests or before merge, and retain screenshots and diffs as CI artifacts. Storybook recommends visual testing during development and before merge; Percy documents CI integration and pull-request checks.
Common failures and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Every image differs in the status bar | Clock, battery, network or notifications changed | Enable simulator/emulator demo mode and use a clean, fixed device state. |
| Only text regions differ | Locale, font scale, font loading or dynamic copy is different | Fix locale and font settings, wait for fonts, and use seeded text fixtures. |
| Images are blank or half-rendered | Capture occurs before navigation, data or image decode settles | Wait for a stable selector, network completion or a bounded delay; then assert the story or screen is visible. |
| Maestro cannot find a control | Localized text or a missing identifier | Add a stable testID and target it; verify the app build exposes the expected view. |
| Element test passes while the screen is broken | The crop excludes an overlapping or displaced sibling | Add a full-device capture for the affected composition. |
| Expo Go will not launch with your app ID | Expo Go uses a development URL rather than your standalone identity | Use Maestro’s openLink flow for Expo Go; reserve launchApp with an app ID for standalone or EAS builds. |
| Unrelated pixels change on every run | Animations, random data, network responses or rotating content | Seed data, disable motion where possible, wait for settle, and stub volatile services. |
Performance, reliability and maintenance
- Start with high-value stories and screens; broad indiscriminate coverage creates review noise.
- Keep fixtures local or mocked so network latency cannot decide when a capture occurs.
- Use element captures for dense component suites and full-screen captures for composition-critical flows.
- Pin simulator images and upgrade them intentionally. A platform or font-rendering change can require a coordinated baseline review.
- Record the capture configuration with each artifact so a reviewer can reproduce a failure.
- Treat comparison thresholds as a policy decision. A permissive threshold can hide a defect; an exact comparison can expose harmless anti-aliasing differences.
Or skip the browser setup
For website screenshots or web-rendered Storybook output, ScreenshotNeo is the first API to try: it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has the lowest paid plan described here. It is not a replacement for native iOS or Android simulator coverage, but it can remove browser automation from web screenshot jobs.
One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The API reports whether a response was a clean page, a bot check, a blank page, a timeout, a failed load or a cache hit through X-Page-Verdict and whether it was billed through X-Billed. Use the options in the ScreenshotNeo documentation for full-page capture, selectors, device presets, custom CSS or JavaScript, waits, headers, cookies, blocking rules, caching, signed links, async webhooks, bulk capture and PDF output.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Every feature is on every plan: 1,000 screenshots per month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

FAQ
Can Jest snapshots replace visual regression tests?
No. They detect serialized-output changes. Add rendered screenshots when pixel-level appearance matters.
Should every test capture the full device?
No. Use element captures for focused components and full-screen captures where surrounding layout, overlap or system chrome is part of the risk.
Is Chromatic a native React Native screenshot solution?
Its documented visual testing covers browser-rendered Storybook stories. Native-device coverage requires a mobile capture path such as Maestro, Detox or Percy’s Appium workflow.

How many baselines should a project keep?
Keep one for each intentionally supported combination of platform, OS or device configuration, orientation, theme, locale and tested state.
What should happen when a redesign changes many screenshots?
Review the diffs in the pull request, confirm the change is intentional, and approve the coordinated baseline update rather than weakening the comparison.
The Bottom Line
Reliable React Native visual regression testing is a repeatability problem first: stabilize state and device conditions, capture with Maestro or Detox, compare against explicit baselines, and make CI diffs reviewable.
