Google Sheets does not provide a documented “export selected cells as an image” command. To make an image, select and frame the cells, then use your computer or phone’s built-in screenshot feature. If you need a printable document or PDF instead, use File > Print > Selected cells on a computer. Those are different outputs: a screenshot is an image of the screen, while the print workflow creates print output or a PDF.

Choose the result you actually need

Start by deciding whether the recipient needs an image or a document. A screen screenshot preserves exactly what is visible in the Sheets window, including the current zoom, column widths, row heights and any visible surrounding interface. Printing a selected range creates a paginated document and gives you controls for orientation, margins, headers, footers and page breaks.

Route Best for Output Important limitation
Device screenshot A quick image for a message, ticket or presentation PNG or another image format supplied by your operating system Only the cells visible on screen are captured; exact keyboard or button shortcuts differ by device and software version.
Print selected cells A clean document, paper copy or PDF Print output; PDF availability depends on the browser and print dialog It is a print workflow, not a direct image export.
Copy to Google Drawings An editable image-style workaround A drawing that can be downloaded in image formats according to community guidance This is a community workaround, not a guaranteed Sheets feature documented by Google.

Take a screenshot of selected cells on a computer

  1. Open the spreadsheet. Go to Google Sheets and open the workbook containing the data.
  2. Select the range. Drag across the cells you want to show. If the range is larger than the current view, scroll and adjust the selection so the final image contains the intended rows and columns.
  3. Frame the selection. Resize the browser window, adjust the Sheets zoom, hide irrelevant sidebars and scroll until the selected cells are easy to read. This is framing advice, not a special Sheets command. Leave enough surrounding context to identify the headers, but exclude unrelated tabs, comments or other private data.
  4. Use the operating system’s screenshot control. With the desired cells visible, invoke the screenshot feature built into your computer. Choose a region or window capture if your system offers those choices, and draw around the cells. Shortcut keys vary by platform and software version, so use the current help for your operating system rather than relying on an unverified key combination.
  5. Check the saved image. Open the result and verify that the first and last rows, column labels, decimal places and any notes are visible. Re-capture at a larger zoom if text is hard to read.

Google’s official help does not document a button that downloads ordinary selected cell data directly as PNG, JPEG or WebP. A Google Docs Editors Community answer also describes a screenshot as the practical approach for an image, but that discussion is community guidance rather than a formal product specification (Google Docs Editors Community discussion).

Make the image legible before capturing

  • Widen columns until headers and long values are not truncated.
  • Use a readable zoom level instead of shrinking a very large range into a tiny window.
  • Freeze panes or keep the header row visible when the range needs context.
  • Temporarily hide unrelated columns and rows, but remember to restore them afterward.
  • Check whether filters or hidden rows change what the viewer will infer from the image.
  • Do not include confidential tabs, account names or browser notifications in the capture.

Save selected cells as a PDF or printout

For a document rather than an image, Google provides an official selected-range print path. The current desktop instructions are documented in Google’s “Print from Google Sheets – Computer” help.

  1. Select the cells you want to output.
  2. Choose File > Print.
  3. In the print settings, change the print-area option to Selected cells.
  4. Review the preview and adjust orientation, margins, scale, headers and footers. If the range should break at a particular point, use custom page breaks where the print dialog provides them.
  5. Continue to the browser’s print dialog. Chrome proceeds to a print dialog; Firefox or Safari may automatically download a PDF for viewing, according to Google’s help.
  6. Choose a printer or the PDF save option offered by your browser and confirm the destination.

The preview is the authority: if a column wraps unexpectedly or a row moves to another page, change the page settings before saving. A PDF can be easier to read and archive than a screen image, but it will not behave like a cropped PNG.

Screenshot cells in the Google Sheets mobile app

On Android and iPhone or iPad, Google’s documented route is for printing. Open the spreadsheet, tap More, choose Share & export, then tap Print. See the official Android instructions at Google Sheets printing for Android and the iOS instructions at Google Sheets printing for iPhone and iPad.

For an image, select and frame the cells in the app, then use the screenshot control supplied by your phone or tablet. The exact gesture or buttons depend on the device model and operating-system version, and the cited Google documentation does not specify those controls. Open the resulting image to confirm that the selection and headers are readable.

Optional community workaround: copy the range to Google Drawings

A Google Docs Editors Community expert describes copying a table or range into Google Drawings and then downloading the drawing in an image format. This can help when you need to add annotations or edit the pasted object. It is not an official, guaranteed “export cells as image” feature, so menus, fidelity and available download formats can change. Treat it as an experiment after the direct screenshot and selected-cell print routes.

Common problems and fixes

The screenshot includes too much of the sheet

Use a region or window capture instead of a full-screen capture, and frame the cells after hiding sidebars and unrelated columns. If the range is taller than the display, take multiple images or use the selected-cell print route for a complete document.

Text is too small or blurry

Increase Sheets’ zoom and widen columns before capturing. A screenshot cannot restore detail that was compressed into a small on-screen area. Reopen the saved image at 100% and check the smallest values.

The PDF contains the whole sheet instead of the range

Return to the Sheets print settings and explicitly select Selected cells. Selecting cells alone does not change the print area; the print dialog setting is required.

Rows or columns are missing

Check for hidden rows, active filters and frozen panes. Scroll through the range before capturing, and compare the first and last visible labels with the selection you intended.

The print preview breaks an important table across pages

Change orientation, margins or scale, then use custom page breaks if available. Preview again before saving; the on-screen grid is not a guarantee of how pages will paginate.

Mobile menus do not match these labels

Google can revise app interfaces. Look for the spreadsheet’s More menu and the Share & export section, then consult the current Android or iOS help page linked above if a label has moved.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Give it a URL with one GET request and it returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. For a sheet that the service can load, replace the example URL below with the sheet URL you need to capture; a private workbook that requires a signed-in browser session may need suitable cookies, headers or authorization, and you should verify access before relying on the result.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the complete parameter reference. The following calls use the supplied endpoint and are runnable after you add your API key and target URL.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/YOUR_SHEET_ID/edit -o sheet.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/YOUR_SHEET_ID/edit"}, timeout=90)
r.raise_for_status()
open("sheet.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/YOUR_SHEET_ID/edit' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('sheet.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));

Why this is different from a local browser capture

  • Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. Each cleanup step can be turned off.
  • Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing. The response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
  • An MCP server supplies take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
  • Options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size and margins, custom CSS or JavaScript, click-before-capture actions, hidden selectors, selector or network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification.
  • Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can reduce migration changes. Every feature is available on every plan.

FAQ

Is the Google Drawings method officially supported?

No. It is advice from a Google Docs Editors Community expert, not an official Google Sheets export workflow. Use it only when its editable drawing format is useful and verify the result after pasting.

Can a screenshot prove that hidden rows do not exist?

No. An image records only the visible state at capture time. If completeness matters, provide the selected-cell PDF or the original sheet alongside the image and explain any filters or hidden rows.
