For most Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs, press Windows logo key + Shift + S, choose a snip mode, and select the area, window, or full screen you need. The result opens in Snipping Tool, where you can edit, copy, save, or share it.
Use Print Screen for a full-screen image copied to the clipboard, Alt + Print Screen for the active window, or Windows logo key + PrtScn to save the entire screen directly in PicturesScreenshots. The exact behavior can vary with your Windows settings and keyboard hardware.
The quickest way to capture part of the screen
Windows logo key + Shift + S is the practical default because it lets you choose exactly what is captured instead of taking everything visible.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- When the Snipping Tool overlay appears, select the mode you need: rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen snip.
- Drag around the area, click a window, or confirm the full-screen capture.
- Use the notification or Snipping Tool editor to annotate, copy, save, or share the image.
Microsoft describes this shortcut as opening the snipping overlay for an image snapshot. The capture is placed in the clipboard and presented in Snipping Tool; it is not the same as automatically creating a file in every Windows configuration.

Rectangular and freeform snips
Rectangular snip is best for a precise box around a dialog, image, or paragraph. Freeform snip lets you draw an irregular outline around an object. In either mode, the pixels outside your selection are excluded.
Window and full-screen snips
Window snip captures a selected application window. Full-screen snip captures all visible displays as one image. If several windows overlap, window mode avoids accidentally including them.
Capturing a menu that disappears
Open Snipping Tool and choose its Delay option before starting the snip. Start the countdown, open the menu during the delay, and then make the selection. This is useful for context menus and hover states that vanish when you press a shortcut.
Copy the entire screen to paste somewhere else
Press Print Screen (also labelled PrtSc or PrtScn) to copy the whole screen to the clipboard. Open Word, Paint, an email, a chat, or another image editor and press Ctrl + V.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePrint Screen does not normally create a file by itself. If pressing it opens the Snipping Tool overlay instead, your Windows installation is using the configurable Print Screen behavior. Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and check Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. Labels can differ slightly between Windows versions.

Capture only the active window
Click the window you want, then press Alt + Print Screen. Windows copies that active window to the clipboard, excluding other windows and the desktop. Paste it with Ctrl + V and save it from the application where you pasted it.
This shortcut captures the window that has focus, not necessarily the window whose title bar is visible. Click inside the intended application immediately before using the shortcut if several windows are open.
Save a full-screen screenshot directly as a file
Press Windows logo key + PrtScn. Windows saves a full-screen image under File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots. The screen may briefly dim to indicate that the capture succeeded.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Some compact keyboards and laptops do not have a dedicated PrtScn key. Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an alternative on applicable hardware. Keyboard firmware differs, so consult the instructions for your exact laptop, keyboard, or Surface model if that combination does nothing.
Save, edit, and change where Snipping Tool stores images
After a snip, select Snipping Tool’s save control, choose a filename and location, and confirm the format offered by your installation. You can also copy the image first and save it later from Paint or another editor.

Current Snipping Tool versions can automatically save captures to a Screenshots folder. Microsoft also provides settings for automatic-save behavior and the default folder. Because those settings are user- and version-dependent, check Snipping Tool > Settings when a capture is not where you expect it. A clipboard-only capture will not appear in File Explorer until you paste and save it.
Editing before you save
The Snipping Tool editor supports common markup and sharing actions. Use it to crop or annotate a capture before sending it, or open the image in another editor for more extensive changes.

Record moving screen content
For motion rather than a still image, press Windows logo key + Shift + R to start a video snip when that feature is available. Snipping Tool can save the recording or open it in Clipchamp for editing. Choose this route for a short demonstration, animated menu, or troubleshooting reproduction; use an image snip when one frame is enough.
Choose the shortcut that matches your goal
| What you need | Shortcut or control | What you receive |
|---|---|---|
| A selected region | Windows logo key + Shift + S | Snipping overlay, then an editable image that can be copied or saved |
| The whole screen for immediate paste | Print Screen | Full-screen image in the clipboard, unless the key is configured for screen snipping |
| Only the focused window | Alt + Print Screen | Active-window image in the clipboard |
| A full-screen file without pasting | Windows logo key + PrtScn | File in PicturesScreenshots |
| A keyboard without PrtScn | Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar | Microsoft-documented alternative on applicable devices |
| Moving content | Windows logo key + Shift + R | Video snip that can be saved or edited in Clipchamp |
No separate hardware is required for these built-in workflows. The deciding factors are capture scope (region, window, or full screen), output (clipboard or file), and whether you need editing or recording.
Troubleshoot a screenshot that did not work
Print Screen opens an overlay
That is usually the Print Screen accessibility setting, not a failed keyboard. Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and review Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. You can either use the overlay or change the setting if you specifically need clipboard-only behavior.

Print Screen and Alt + Print Screen are clipboard operations. Paste the image with Ctrl + V into an editor or message, then use that program’s Save command. For Snipping Tool, open its settings to check automatic saving and the configured Screenshots folder.
The image is in the wrong folder
Snipping Tool’s default location and automatic-save behavior can be changed. Open Snipping Tool, go to Settings, and review the save options rather than assuming every Windows PC uses the same folder.
A menu closes before it is captured
Use Snipping Tool’s Delay control, start the countdown, and open the menu before the timer ends. This avoids trying to hold a shortcut while also operating the menu.
The shortcut does nothing
Check whether the keyboard requires an Fn modifier, whether another application has remapped the key, and whether Snipping Tool is available on the Windows installation. Try the overlay shortcut first; if it works, save from Snipping Tool even when the dedicated Print Screen key is unavailable.

Or skip the browser setup
If what you need is a screenshot of a web page rather than your local Windows desktop, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. It is useful for automated page captures, documentation, and pipelines where opening a browser manually is unnecessary.
Here is the same request in cURL; replace the access key and URL:
ScreenshotNeo API documentation
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Why this differs from a local screen capture
- Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each cleanup step can be turned off.
- Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; each response identifies the result with
X-Page-VerdictandX-Billedheaders. - An MCP server provides
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdftools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. - Options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size and page ranges, custom CSS or JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification.
Every feature is included on every plan. Prices are:
| Plan | Allowance | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 1,000 shots per month | $0, no card |
| Starter | 3,000 shots | $5 |
| Growth | 15,000 shots | $15 |
| Pro | 60,000 shots | $39 |
| Scale | 250,000 shots | $99 |
| Business | 1,000,000 shots | $249 |
Yearly billing provides two months free. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can ScreenshotNeo capture my Windows desktop or an open application?
No. ScreenshotNeo captures a web page identified by a URL. Use Windows shortcuts and Snipping Tool for your local desktop, and use ScreenshotNeo when you need repeatable website images or PDFs.
Why might two Windows PCs save the same shortcut differently?
Windows version, Snipping Tool settings, keyboard firmware, and whether Print Screen is configured to open screen snipping can all change the result. Check the relevant Settings page and your device’s keyboard documentation.
