Use Google Search Console’s Performance report to measure image SEO separately from ordinary web search. Set Search type to Image, choose a consistent comparison period, and monitor clicks, impressions, click-through rate (CTR), and average position by landing page and query. Then check the newer Web: multimodal view for traffic generated by Lens, Circle to Search on Android, image uploads to Google Search, and Chrome’s “Search this image.” Use Google Analytics to learn what visitors do after the click, but do not expect its sessions to match Search Console clicks.
What image SEO tracking can—and cannot—tell you
Search Console reports search visibility and interactions before a visitor reaches your site. For Image results, its page dimension identifies the host page that received the click, not an individual image-file URL. If one page contains ten images, Search Console does not attribute performance to a specific image.
The four core measures are:
- Impressions: how often an eligible result was shown under Google’s visibility rules.
- Clicks: interactions that open the expanded result or take the user out of Google; merely enlarging a thumbnail is not automatically a click.
- CTR: clicks divided by impressions.
- Average position: an aggregate placement measure, not a universal rank for every searcher.
These figures describe Google’s search activity. Analytics adds the post-click layer—sessions, engagement and conversions—using different collection and attribution systems.
Set up a repeatable Search Console report
- Open your verified property in Google Search Console.
- Choose Performance → Search results.
- Select a date range long enough to smooth daily noise, such as the previous 28 days, and compare it with the immediately preceding period of equal length. For seasonal sites, also use the same dates from the previous year.
- Open the Search type filter and select Image. This separates image-result activity from Web, News and other result types.
- Record clicks, impressions, CTR and average position at the top of the report.
- Use the Pages and Queries tabs to find which landing pages and searches changed. Add country and device dimensions when a change needs investigation.
Search Console can aggregate charts daily, weekly or monthly. Weekly or monthly views are generally easier to interpret when traffic is modest. Avoid treating one unusual day as a trend.

Read the Image report correctly
Impressions depend on visibility
An image impression is not simply every time Google generated a result. In Image search, the image generally has to be scrolled into view. Combined-result formats apply different rules, and carousel visibility can affect the count. A rise in impressions therefore means greater measured exposure, not that every searcher consciously noticed the image.
Clicks are more specific than thumbnail expansions
Expanding a thumbnail alone does not count as a click. A click on the expanded image, or an interaction that navigates away from Search, does. This distinction explains why impressions can rise while clicks remain flat.
CTR needs its denominator and context
A 4% CTR from 100 impressions is not equivalent to 4% from 100,000. Inspect the page, query, country and device rows beside the percentage. A changing result layout can alter CTR without any change to your image file.
Average position is not a fixed rank
Position is calculated across impressions. In image grids, the order depends on screen layout, so the same image can occupy different grid positions on different devices. Personalization, location, language, time and search history also affect live results. Use the metric for direction over time, not as a promise that every user sees a particular slot.

Pages: identify landing-page winners and losses
Sort pages by impressions to find where Google is showing your content, then by clicks to find pages attracting visits. Remember that these are host pages. To diagnose an individual image, inspect the page’s HTML, image names, alternative text, surrounding copy and structured context yourself; Search Console will not separate its images.
Queries: connect visibility to intent
Look for queries with rising impressions but falling CTR, and for queries where both impressions and clicks declined. Separate branded, product, instructional and exploratory searches where possible. A page may gain broad exposure for a new query while losing clicks on a high-intent term, so aggregate totals can hide the commercial change.
Segment before changing a page
- Country: determine whether a shift is regional.
- Device: compare mobile and desktop layouts and loading behavior.
- Date: check whether the change persists across matched periods.
- Search type: keep Image and Web: multimodal data in separate series.
Track Web: multimodal search separately
Google announced on September 24, 2026, that Search Console was rolling out a Web: multimodal search-type view. Its data covers Lens, Circle to Search on Android, image uploads to Google Search and Chrome’s right-click “Search this image.” The announcement describes a global rollout beginning September 24, 2026; the view shows metrics when your site receives traffic from these queries.
Find it in the same Performance report by opening the search-type selector and choosing Web: multimodal when it is available for your property. Compare its pages, queries, dates, countries and devices with the separate Image view. Do not add the two totals casually: they represent different search experiences and result interactions.

Join Search Console with Google Analytics without mixing metrics
Use Search Console to answer “How did people discover us in Google?” and Analytics to answer “What happened after arrival?” Create a landing-page analysis in Analytics for URLs that gained Image clicks, then examine engagement, key events or conversions. Label the source and date range in every report.
Counts will not match. Search Console clicks and Analytics sessions have different definitions, processing and attribution. A user can click more than once, reject analytics consent, use tracking protection, or arrive through a redirect; these are reasons to investigate discrepancies, not to force the tools into a single total.
Diagnose weak image-search progress
High-quality images have few impressions
- Confirm that important images are included with standard HTML
<img>elements rather than exposed only through scripts or CSS backgrounds. - Check that Google can crawl the image and its host page.
- Use an image sitemap when it helps expose assets that normal page discovery may miss.
- Make the landing page relevant to the image and explain the subject in nearby text.
These are discoverability and context checks recommended in Google’s image guidance; none guarantees a ranking.
Impressions rise but clicks do not
Break the result down by query and device. Confirm that the image and page title match the intent, inspect mobile rendering, and check whether a carousel or grid is supplying many low-action impressions. Compare CTR with the previous matched period rather than with a universal target.

Rank #4
Clicks fall after an implementation change
Review deployments, redirects, robots rules, lazy-loading behavior, image URLs and page templates. Test the affected landing pages on mobile and desktop. Also check country and query segments: an algorithm or demand shift may be regional rather than caused by your code.
Performance is poor despite discoverability
Balance visual quality against loading cost. Serve appropriately sized, compressed images, preserve useful detail, and avoid delaying the main image indefinitely behind scripts. Faster pages improve the visitor experience, but speed alone is not a ranking guarantee.
Automate reporting with the Search Console API
For a dashboard or scheduled export, request Search Analytics data with the search type set to image, then group results by page, query, country or device. Google recommends daily queries for one day of data to reduce the chance of exceeding quota. Data is typically available after two to three days, so label the latest dates as provisional.
Grouped API responses can lose some data, especially when many dimensions are requested. Treat an extraction as a reporting view, not a perfect unfiltered census. Store the request parameters, property, date and search type with each snapshot so a later comparison remains reproducible.
Best Value
A practical weekly and monthly routine
Weekly check (15–30 minutes)
- Review Image clicks and impressions against the prior equal period.
- Flag pages with meaningful impression growth but no click growth.
- Inspect the largest query and device changes.
- Check Web: multimodal when available for newly appearing traffic.
Monthly review
- Compare a full month with the previous month and the same month last year when seasonality matters.
- List pages that lost both impressions and clicks, then inspect crawl access, page relevance, image quality and loading.
- Join the affected landing pages to Analytics engagement and conversions.
- Annotate redesigns, migrations, publishing bursts and tracking changes next to the chart.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need consistent screenshots of image landing pages for a reporting archive or QA check, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request API. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Common reporting errors and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Image traffic appears missing | Report is still filtered to Web | Select Performance → Search results → Search type → Image. |
| Page rows do not match image URLs | Search Console attributes data to the host page | Use the page’s HTML and crawl diagnostics to identify the contributing image. |
| CTR changes sharply overnight | Small denominator, layout change or device mix | Compare longer matched periods and segment by device and query. |
| API data ends before the latest days | Normal processing delay | Allow roughly two to three days and mark recent values provisional. |
| Analytics and Search Console disagree | Different definitions and collection systems | Report each tool separately and investigate consent, redirects and attribution. |
| Multimodal view is absent | Rollout or no qualifying traffic yet | Check again later; the view displays data when the site receives those queries. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I report Image and Web: multimodal as one KPI?
No. Keep separate series because they describe different search experiences. A combined figure is meaningful only when you document the reason and preserve both underlying totals.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How long should I wait before judging a change?
Use an equal, stable comparison period rather than a single day. For API exports, allow the normal two-to-three-day processing delay before treating the latest dates as complete.
Can Search Console tell me which image on a page won the click?
No. Image Search Analytics attributes the result to the host page and does not distinguish multiple images on that page.
