You do not install Chrome Headless as a separate Windows application. Install Google Chrome normally, then launch its Windows binary with the --headless flag. The basic command is start chrome --headless. Add task flags such as --dump-dom, --screenshot or --print-to-pdf when you need output from a page.
What “Chrome Headless” means on Windows
Headless is a Chrome operating mode that runs without displaying the normal browser window. The same installed Chrome application performs navigation, parsing and JavaScript execution, but Windows does not show its user interface. This makes it useful for unattended scripts, page inspection, screenshots and PDF generation.
Current Chrome uses the integrated Headless implementation. You install Chrome first, then pass a command-line switch. There is no standard “Chrome Headless” installer in the normal Windows workflow.
Check Windows and hardware requirements
Google’s current Chrome requirements are:
| Windows system | Minimum requirement |
|---|---|
| Intel or compatible x86 hardware | Windows 10 or later, with a Pentium 4 or newer processor that supports SSE3 |
| ARM hardware | Windows 11 or later |
On a managed computer, you may also need permission to install software or run Chrome from Command Prompt. Headless mode itself does not remove enterprise policies, network restrictions or authentication requirements imposed by your organization.

Install Chrome on Windows
- Download the Chrome installation file from Google’s official Chrome download page.
- Run the installer. If Windows displays a run or permission prompt, approve it when appropriate for your account and policy.
- Follow the on-screen installation steps.
- Open Chrome once after installation. This confirms that the installation completed and that Windows registered the Chrome command alias where available.
Google does not prescribe one universal executable path for every Windows installation. The location can vary by installation type, user account and administration policy, so avoid hard-coding a path copied from another computer.
Start Chrome in Headless mode
Basic launch
Open Command Prompt and run:
start chrome --headless
The command starts Chrome without a visible browser window. It may appear to do nothing because Headless has no UI; that is expected. Add a URL and a task flag to produce useful output.
Print the rendered DOM
start chrome --headless --dump-dom https://example.com
--dump-dom serializes the DOM after Chrome has parsed the document and run page scripts. This is different from downloading the original HTML: script-generated elements can be present in the serialized result.
Capture a screenshot
start chrome --headless --screenshot https://example.com
Chrome writes screenshot.png in the current working directory. To control the viewport, add a window size:
start chrome --headless --window-size=1440,900 --screenshot https://example.com
The viewport affects responsive breakpoints and the portion visible in a normal viewport capture. A full, vertically stitched page is not implied by --screenshot; for long pages, use an automation workflow that supports full-page capture or a screenshot service.
Print a page to PDF
start chrome --headless --print-to-pdf https://example.com
The default output is output.pdf. On current versions, suppress the browser’s PDF header and footer with:
start chrome --headless --no-pdf-header-footer --print-to-pdf https://example.com
Older Chrome releases used different PDF flag behavior, so check the command-line reference that matches the version deployed on your machines before standardizing a script.

Control waiting and time-dependent pages
Set a maximum wait
start chrome --headless --timeout=30000 --screenshot https://example.com
--timeout=MILLISECONDS sets the maximum wait before the requested DOM, screenshot or PDF operation proceeds while the page may still be loading. Increase it for slow, legitimate pages; an excessive value can make a batch job take much longer when a server is unreachable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fast-forward page timers
start chrome --headless --virtual-time-budget=5000 --dump-dom https://example.com
--virtual-time-budget=MILLISECONDS gives time-dependent page code a virtual amount of time to run before capture. It can help pages that reveal content after timers, but it does not guarantee that every network request or animation has completed.
Access Chrome internal pages
To navigate to a chrome:// URL in Headless mode, add --allow-chrome-scheme-url. The command-line reference documents this switch for Chrome 123 and later:
start chrome --headless --allow-chrome-scheme-url --dump-dom chrome://version
Current Headless mode versus the legacy shell
Chrome 112 introduced the updated Headless implementation inside Chrome itself. From Chrome 132, both --headless and --headless=new select that implementation, while --headless=old no longer launches the old mode from the main Chrome binary.
| Option | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
Integrated Chrome with --headless |
Normal Chrome behavior, end-to-end testing and extension-related workflows | Uses the installed Chrome application and its broader browser functionality |
chrome-headless-shell |
Automated screenshotting or scraping when a smaller dependency footprint is more important than full Chrome behavior | It is a separate binary distributed through Chrome for Testing; it represents the legacy shell implementation |
If you specifically need the standalone shell, Google’s documented Puppeteer Browsers command is:

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutenpx @puppeteer/browsers install chrome-headless-shell@stable
Use the integrated mode unless your automation was designed for shell-specific behavior. Do not add obsolete tutorials’ --headless=old or --disable-gpu switches by default. The old flag is no longer the way to select legacy mode in current Chrome, and the older shell documentation’s GPU example describes deprecated behavior.
Use a reliable Windows command workflow
Choose an output directory
Command Prompt writes relative output files to its current directory. Create and enter a dedicated folder before capture:

mkdir C:headless-output
cd /d C:headless-output
start chrome --headless --screenshot https://example.com
This makes it clear where screenshot.png or output.pdf was created. If a filename already exists, decide whether your script should archive, rename or replace it before running the next capture.
Quote URLs and paths when needed
Use quotes around URLs containing characters that Command Prompt could interpret, and quote paths containing spaces. For repeatable jobs, call the Chrome executable directly after locating it on the target machine rather than assuming that start chrome is registered everywhere.

Separate profiles for automation
Do not point unattended jobs at the profile you use interactively if the job can run concurrently with your desktop Chrome session. A separate user-data directory avoids profile-lock conflicts and keeps automated cookies and preferences isolated:
start chrome --headless --user-data-dir=C:headless-profile --dump-dom https://example.com
Create a dedicated directory with suitable access controls. Treat cookies, authorization headers and saved sessions in an automation profile as sensitive credentials.
Troubleshooting common failures
“chrome” is not recognized
Cause: Windows cannot resolve the Chrome command alias, or Chrome was installed for a context that is not available to your account.
Fix: Confirm Chrome opens from the Start menu. Locate the installed Chrome executable using your organization’s approved method and invoke that full path in Command Prompt, quoting it if it contains spaces. Do not assume one fixed path applies to every Windows installation.
The command runs but no file appears
Cause: Headless has no visible window, and output is written to the current working directory.

Fix: Run cd to verify the directory before starting Chrome, then look for screenshot.png or output.pdf. Use an explicit output directory and ensure the account can write there.
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Possible causes: the page requires more time, content is injected after load, access is blocked, or the capture is only the initial viewport.
Fix: Increase --timeout, use --virtual-time-budget for timer-driven content, and test the URL interactively in Chrome. A login wall, bot challenge or network policy cannot be solved merely by adding Headless flags.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe PDF contains headers or footers
Add --no-pdf-header-footer on current Chrome versions. If the switch is rejected, verify the Chrome version and consult the matching command-line documentation because older releases used different behavior.
A legacy tutorial fails with --headless=old
That mode was removed from the main Chrome binary in Chrome 132. Use plain --headless for integrated Headless, or install the separately distributed chrome-headless-shell when your test specifically requires the shell.
A chrome:// URL will not load
Add --allow-chrome-scheme-url, which is documented as available from Chrome 123. Ordinary web URLs do not require this switch.
Performance, reliability and security considerations
- Reuse a controlled environment: Pin the Chrome channel and version used by CI so a browser update does not silently change rendering or command-line behavior.
- Budget waits: Set a timeout appropriate to the page and record failures separately from successful captures.
- Keep profiles isolated: Use a dedicated
--user-data-dirfor automation and restrict access to any cookies or authenticated state. - Plan for dynamic sites: A command-line screenshot is not a full browser test harness. Sites that need clicks, selector waits, custom headers or multi-step login generally require browser automation.
- Validate outputs: Check that the expected file exists, has a non-zero size and can be opened before marking a batch job successful.
Or skip the browser setup

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run Chrome Headless without installing Chrome?
The normal Windows workflow requires Chrome first. The separate chrome-headless-shell is a different binary for specialized automation and is installed through Chrome for Testing tooling.
Does Headless mode work with Chrome extensions?
Integrated Headless uses Chrome itself and is the appropriate choice when your test depends on ordinary Chrome behavior or extension-related functionality. Verify the exact extension workflow against the Chrome version used by your automation.
What does –dump-dom return?
It returns a serialized DOM after Chrome parses the page and runs its scripts, so it can include content that was created client-side rather than appearing in the original response HTML.
The Bottom Line
Install Chrome normally, then run start chrome --headless with the task flag you need. Use integrated Headless for current Chrome behavior; choose chrome-headless-shell only when its smaller, specialized runtime matches your automation.
