To change a template’s colors without rebuilding its design, open it in an editor such as Adobe Express, save or choose a color theme or brand palette, apply it, and review the assignments on every page. The result depends on what the editor recognizes as editable: theme controls can recolor text, shapes, backgrounds, and supported graphics, but they do not guarantee that every pixel in a flattened image will change.
In this guide, “dynamically” means changing a design’s palette through the editor rather than manually replacing each color. It does not mean that a finished image will automatically adapt to arbitrary colors at runtime.
What changes when you apply a color scheme?
A design editor can only change colors it can identify and control. A template made from editable text, shapes, backgrounds, and supported illustrations is a good candidate for palette changes. A photograph or flattened raster image is different: unless the editor offers a specific recoloring tool for that selected image, changing the page theme does not promise to replace its pixels.
Before changing anything, check whether the design is an editable template or a single imported image. If the artwork is flattened, look for an editor feature that specifically recolors selected graphics, or return to the original editable file. Do not assume that applying a brand or theme will recolor every image on the page.

Theme, brand palette, and selected-graphic recoloring
- A color theme is a saved set of colors that can be applied to a design and, in Adobe Express, shuffled to preview different assignments.
- A brand palette applies a chosen brand’s colors and can also apply its fonts. Adobe Express lets you exclude colors or fonts from that application.
- Recolor graphics is a separate Adobe Express action for selected images or illustrations; it is not the same as changing the whole design’s theme.
Change a template’s colors in Adobe Express
The steps below follow Adobe Express’s documented controls. Menu labels and feature availability can change; Adobe’s Help Center pages “Apply color themes to designs” (last updated 17 December 2025) and “Apply brand to Adobe Express designs” (last updated 17 August 2026) describe the controls referenced here.
1. Create and save a reusable color theme
- Open the template or design in the Adobe Express editor.
- Open Theme. Under the selected brand, create a color theme, add the colors you want to use together, and save it.
- Choose colors that have a clear purpose—for example, a main brand color, an accent, a background neutral, and a text color. This is a practical starting point, not a required palette formula.
Adobe says a color theme can contain up to 20 colors, and recommends focusing on two to five colors that are commonly used together for best results. The maximum is a product limit; it is not a recommendation to use all 20 colors in a single design.
2. Apply the theme and preview other assignments
- With the design open, go to Theme and select the saved color theme.
- Use the shuffle control to preview another assignment of the palette if the first result does not suit the layout.
- If black or white should be part of the combinations, add them to the theme rather than assuming they will be assigned automatically.
Theme application can change which editable elements receive which palette colors. Review each page after applying or shuffling; an attractive palette can still produce weak text contrast, an unclear call to action, or a visual hierarchy that differs from the original.

- Professional version of our popular DKK Card with n-Chrome coated color targets
- The color patches are 100% coated with DGK's n-Chrome process, allowing for a much higher level of color saturation, luminance, and accuracy, while getting rid of metamerism.
- Includes 2 DKC-Pro Cards - Each with Precision 12% and 18% Gray reference for white balance plus 18-Color patches for superior digital color correction
- For use with software such as Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom
3. Apply a brand palette instead
- Open Brands and select the brand whose palette you want to use.
- Choose Apply brand. Use the settings beside the button if you want to exclude the brand’s colors or fonts from the application.
- Use the shuffle control to preview a different combination.
- Choose Apply brand to all pages if the same brand treatment should extend across the entire file.
Applying a brand across pages is useful for a multi-page presentation or other design file, but still inspect pages individually. Page layouts differ, so the same color assignment may not have the same effect everywhere.

- In Brands, select the relevant brand.
- Open the more menu on its palette and choose Recolor graphics for the selected image or illustration.
- Review the result in context and undo or adjust it if important detail, legibility, or contrast is lost.
Adobe Help Center describes this action as using a brand’s colors to recolor images or illustrations in a design. That specific control is useful when a selected graphic needs attention; it should not be read as a promise that every arbitrary imported image or every pixel in a flattened page will be recolored.
Make a reusable template with approved colors
If other people will reuse the design, a saved palette alone does not necessarily prevent them from choosing different colors. Adobe Express documents a separate template restriction workflow for Teams and Enterprise. The Help Center article “Create custom templates with brand restrictions for Teams and Enterprise” is dated 23 March 2026.

- Open the file and choose Share → Convert to template.
- Choose Style to set the color, font, and editing restrictions.
- Select the brands that define the allowed colors and fonts. Adobe documents a limit of up to five linked brands per custom template.
- Save the template with the restrictions you intend collaborators to follow.
With Lock & Restrictions enabled, collaborators can use only colors and fonts from linked Brands and Libraries and cannot change those settings. Adobe’s “Brand style restrictions” page, last updated 18 December 2025, also says users cannot access the Themes panel while these restrictions apply. True black, white, and transparency remain available in color pickers. In other words, restricted templates trade free theme-shuffling for brand control, with those color-picker exceptions.
How Adobe Express and Canva differ for this task
Canva’s official Brand Kits guide describes storing brand logos, colors, fonts, and assets; it says color themes define how colors work across backgrounds, elements, and text, and that those colors update together when a theme is applied. It also describes generating themes from Brand Template suggestions or extracting them from existing designs. The documented information here does not establish a complete menu-by-menu procedure for recoloring every type of imported image in Canva, so use Canva’s current instructions for exact steps.

Check the result before exporting or sharing
- Contrast: Check text and icons against their new backgrounds, especially small text and buttons.
- Hierarchy: Confirm that headings, calls to action, and secondary details still look distinct.
- Consistency: Review every page, not just the first one; layouts can use palette colors differently.
- Graphic scope: If an image did not change, check whether it is editable and whether you used a selected-graphic recoloring feature rather than only applying a page theme.
- Template permissions: If collaborators need to choose among palettes, avoid restrictions that remove Themes access. If consistency matters more, set approved brand restrictions and explain the black, white, and transparency exceptions.
Troubleshooting color changes
The image stayed the same
The selected asset may be a photograph, flattened image, or unsupported graphic. Try selecting it and using Adobe Express’s Brands → palette more menu → Recolor graphics action. If that control is unavailable or the result is unsuitable, edit the original artwork or use editable source elements instead of expecting a whole-design theme to change it.
The theme changed the wrong elements
Theme application assigns colors to editable elements; it may not preserve the exact color-to-object mapping you had in mind. Undo the change, adjust the saved palette, or shuffle to preview another assignment, then inspect the page before applying a choice across all pages.
Some pages look inconsistent
Different page layouts can use the same palette differently. Review each page after applying the theme or brand. If you chose Apply brand to all pages, check that each page still has readable text and a clear hierarchy.

A collaborator cannot open Themes or change a color
Check whether the template uses Lock & Restrictions. Adobe says restricted collaborators cannot access the Themes panel or change linked brand color and font settings. Change the template’s restrictions if collaborators need more freedom, or give them an approved set of linked brands if they need controlled choices.
The brand palette is missing or incomplete
Confirm that you selected the intended brand and that its colors or fonts were not excluded in the apply settings. For restricted templates, verify that the correct Brands and Libraries are linked. Adobe’s documentation states the controls and limits described above but does not establish that every editor account or template has identical availability; plan and account access matter.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a design editor: it does not change a template’s palette. After you publish or host a preview, it can capture that page without setting up browser automation yourself. The one-call request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. These capture features help inspect a published preview, not edit its colors.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing a color theme automatically update a template every time it is used?
Not by itself. The documented Adobe Express workflow applies a saved theme or brand to a design; a reusable template can separately impose brand restrictions for collaborators.
Can I guarantee that a photo will adopt my brand colors?
No universal guarantee is established. Adobe Express documents recoloring selected images or illustrations, but a theme alone does not promise to change every pixel of an arbitrary or flattened image.
