If a website screenshot changed after a migration, first determine whether the difference comes from a changed URL, a failed asset request, mixed HTTP/HTTPS content, a redirect loop, cache/CDN behavior, or the new origin. Open the affected page in a browser, inspect the Network and Console panels, and compare every image, stylesheet, script, font, and redirect with the URL you intended to serve. Only compare screenshots after those requests succeed under the same URL, viewport, and loading conditions.

Start by classifying the migration

The correct checks depend on what moved. Record the old and new URLs, protocol, host, and infrastructure before changing anything.

Migration type First question Highest-value check
Domain or path change Does each old URL map directly to the intended new URL? Test the URL map and every redirect destination, including embedded assets.
HTTP to HTTPS Are any images, CSS files, scripts, fonts, or API calls still using http://? Inspect browser warnings and replace insecure references with secure URLs.
Hosting-only move Does the new origin serve the same files and application responses? Review pages, images, forms, and downloads on the new host before retiring the old one.
CDN or edge change Does the origin work when the edge is bypassed? Compare origin and CDN responses, cache state, and redirect rules.

Google Search Central says a site-move plan must include embedded URLs for “videos, images, JavaScript, and CSS files.” A page that opens at its new address can still produce a broken screenshot if one of those dependencies was omitted.

Inspect the exact request behind the visual symptom

Use Chrome DevTools Network

  1. Open the affected page in Chrome.
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Option+I (macOS), then select Network.
  3. Enable Preserve log and reload with DevTools open. Use the filter box for Img, CSS, JS, Font, or a filename.
  4. Click a failed request and record its status, final URL, response headers, and initiator. A 301 or 302 is not itself a failure; follow it to the final response.
  5. Open Console in a second panel and note mixed-content, CORS, certificate, or JavaScript errors.

Chrome’s Network panel connects a screenshot symptom to the specific request that failed or was redirected. Compare the actual request with the URL in your post-migration map rather than relying on what appears in the address bar.

Interpret common status patterns

  • 200 with a wrong image: the path may return an HTML error page or a stale asset. Check the response content type and preview.
  • 301/302 chain: follow every hop. A redirect to an old host, wrong scheme, or nonexistent path explains missing resources.
  • 404: the file was not copied, the path is case-sensitive, or the URL map is incomplete.
  • 403: origin rules, hotlink protection, authentication, or a CDN firewall may reject the browser.
  • 5xx or timeout: investigate the new origin, upstream dependencies, and edge timeout settings.

Fix URL maps and redirect behavior

For domain or path migrations

Create an old-to-new map for documents and separately for assets. Google recommends server-side permanent redirects where possible, direct destinations rather than long chains, and testing redirects before launch. Keep redirects for as long as possible—generally at least one year, according to its migration guidance.

  1. Request an old page and each important old asset with redirects enabled.
  2. Confirm the final status is the intended success status and the final URL is canonical.
  3. Remove chains such as old host → temporary host → new host; point the old URL directly to the final URL.
  4. Check case, trailing slash, encoded characters, query strings, and file extensions.
  5. Update HTML, CSS, JavaScript, sitemap entries, canonical tags, and application configuration to emit the final URLs directly.

A redirect that works for the document may still be wrong for an image or stylesheet. Test representative resources, not only the homepage.

For redirect loops

Trace the scheme and host at every hop. Cloudflare documents loops when an origin redirects HTTPS back to HTTP or when edge and origin rules conflict. Review TLS mode, origin virtual-host configuration, load-balancer rules, and application redirects together. Make one layer authoritative for HTTPS, then retest in a private window.

Resolve mixed HTTP/HTTPS content

When the document is HTTPS but an image, stylesheet, or script remains HTTP, modern browsers can block the request or warn about it. In DevTools, filter for “Mixed Content” and open the offending URL. Also search the rendered source, CSS, JavaScript bundles, database content, and CMS fields for http://.

  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • Change absolute asset URLs to https:// on the new host.
  • Prefer root-relative paths such as /images/logo.webp when the asset is on the same origin.
  • Configure CMS or database rewrites carefully; do not blindly replace third-party URLs that do not support HTTPS.
  • Verify certificates and intermediate chains for every asset host.

Do not treat a browser warning as proof that the file is absent. The request may be blocked before the server receives it, so the fix is the reference or protocol configuration.

Separate origin problems from cache and CDN problems

Test the new origin

Before decommissioning the old host, inspect pages, images, forms, and downloads against the new infrastructure. Use a temporary hostname, hosts-file override, or provider preview where available. Confirm permissions, case-sensitive filenames, MIME types, compression, and application-generated URLs.

Cloudflare-specific image troubleshooting

If Cloudflare is serving the site and images are missing, its published guidance recommends purging the missing image URL, temporarily pausing the service, or disabling Rocket Loader, then retrying in a private browser tab. These are diagnostic actions for Cloudflare, not universal remedies. If bypassing Cloudflare fixes the screenshot, compare cache rules, transformations, firewall decisions, and origin responses before re-enabling features one by one.

Cache clues

  • An old screenshot or old asset after a successful deployment suggests a stale browser, CDN, or service-worker cache.
  • A failure that appears only at the edge suggests a cache key, rule, transformation, or firewall issue.
  • Different results by region suggest multiple edge policies or inconsistent origin replicas.

Purge narrowly first, then retest with a private tab and a cache-busting query string. Avoid making permanent cache changes until you know which layer served the bad response.

Check crawler access separately from browser rendering

A screenshot is a browser-rendering result; search crawling is a separate condition. Google recommends checking temporary robots.txt or noindex blocks and using Search Console URL Inspection when assessing crawler access during a move. A page can look perfect to you while Googlebot receives a block, redirect, authentication challenge, or server error.

  1. Run URL Inspection for representative new URLs.
  2. Review the indexed URL, crawl result, robots status, and rendered resource warnings.
  3. Remove temporary migration blocks when the new site is ready.
  4. Monitor server logs for Googlebot and ordinary browser requests separately.

Compare screenshots under controlled conditions

Take the “before” and “after” captures at the intended final URL, with the same viewport, device pixel ratio, color scheme, locale, timezone, authentication state, and wait condition. Ensure lazy-loaded images have been triggered and fonts have finished loading. Record the response status and failed-request list alongside each image. A visual difference is actionable only when the rendering conditions and asset requests are comparable.

Comparison axis What to record What it distinguishes
URL and path Requested and final document/resource URLs Mapping errors versus host-only changes
Protocol HTTP/HTTPS for every dependency Mixed-content blocking
Redirect destination Each hop and final status Wrong targets, chains, and loops
Origin versus edge Headers, cache status, and direct-origin result Application failure versus CDN behavior
Browser versus crawler DevTools result and URL Inspection result Rendering issue versus crawl-access issue

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf—let Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client capture pages.

Use the same final URL you are diagnosing. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options.

Troubleshooting checklist

  • CSS or images absent: inspect the exact request, content type, status, and final URL; then check mixed content and file-case differences.
  • Images return 301: follow the redirect and replace chains or wrong destinations with a direct final URL.
  • Endless loading: look for redirect loops, blocked scripts, origin timeouts, and network-idle conditions that never settle.
  • Only Cloudflare capture fails: purge the URL, pause Cloudflare, or disable Rocket Loader as a controlled test.
  • Browser works but indexing fails: inspect robots.txt, noindex, Search Console URL Inspection, and Googlebot responses.
  • Only one viewport differs: check responsive CSS, lazy-loading thresholds, font loading, and device pixel ratio.

FAQ

Should I delete the old site immediately?

No. Keep the old infrastructure available while representative pages, assets, forms, downloads, redirects, and crawler access are verified on the new host.

Is a 301 redirect automatically safe for an image?

No. The redirect must end at the correct image response, with the expected content type and no loop, authentication challenge, or HTML error body.

Can a screenshot prove that Google can crawl the page?

No. Browser rendering and crawler access are separate checks; use Search Console URL Inspection and server logs for crawl verification.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should migration redirects remain active?

Google Search Central recommends keeping them for as long as possible, generally at least one year.

What evidence should I collect before asking for help?

Provide the before and after URLs, browser Console and Network errors, response statuses and redirect destinations, affected resource URLs, and whether a CDN or edge service is enabled.

The Bottom Line

Find the failed request before changing the screenshot tool: classify the migration, inspect assets and redirects, eliminate mixed content and loops, isolate CDN behavior, and verify crawler access separately. Then capture both versions under identical rendering conditions.
