To change a screenshot’s pixel width and height, resize the saved image in an editor: open it, choose its resize or image-size controls, enter the target dimensions, keep the aspect ratio locked unless distortion is intentional, and save a copy. Cropping is different: it removes part of the image rather than simply changing its pixel dimensions.

Choose the right operation: resize, crop, or change the canvas

These controls solve different problems, so check what your destination actually requires before editing.

  • Resize changes the image’s pixel dimensions. Resampling adjusts the image data to produce the new number of pixels.
  • Crop removes content around the edges. It can change the aspect ratio, but does not necessarily set an exact output width and height.
  • Change the canvas changes the area or shape of the image without necessarily scaling the screenshot content. Depending on the editor, the new area may be transparent or filled with a background color.

If a form asks for exact pixel dimensions, use a resize control with resampling, then verify the exported file. If it asks for a particular shape while keeping a subject in frame, crop to that ratio and resize afterward if necessary.

Before resizing: dimensions, proportions, and image quality

Keep or unlock the aspect ratio?

The aspect ratio is width compared with height. When the ratio is locked, changing one dimension automatically adjusts the other, preserving the screenshot’s proportions. Keep that lock on for most screenshots. If you set width and height independently, the image may look stretched or compressed. Unlock it only when the final canvas must have those exact dimensions and a change in proportions is acceptable.

What resampling changes

Resampling changes the pixel data to create the requested dimensions. Upscaling makes an image larger but cannot restore detail that was not captured; text may look soft. Downscaling discards pixel information and can make small text harder to read. Inspect the result at its intended display size, especially when it includes interface labels or fine print.

Pixel dimensions are not file size

An image’s width and height do not determine its file size by themselves. PNG, JPEG, and WebP use different encoding and compression, and the image content also matters. If an upload has a byte-size limit, check the saved file size separately rather than assuming that meeting the pixel limit is enough.

Windows: resize a screenshot with Snipping Tool and Paint

Snipping Tool captures the screen; Paint provides the documented route to resize the saved image. Microsoft describes Snipping Tool as a way to “Take a snapshot to copy words or images from all or part of your PC screen.”

  1. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S and capture the area you need.
  2. Open the capture in Snipping Tool.
  3. Select Edit > Edit with Paint.
  4. In Paint, open Resize and choose pixels rather than a percentage.
  5. Enter the required width or height. Leave Maintain aspect ratio enabled unless you intentionally want the image distorted. If the ratio is locked, the other value changes automatically.
  6. Save a new copy in PNG or another format required by the destination.

For a target that specifies both dimensions, enter them as required and pay attention to the aspect-ratio setting. If the screenshot’s original proportions differ from the target, preserving proportions means you cannot fill both dimensions exactly by resizing alone: crop or change the canvas as well.

Mac: resize with Preview

Preview has a direct image-size workflow. Apple’s instructions explain that “If you change either the width or height, the other value changes to maintain the proportions.”

  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  1. Open the screenshot in Preview.
  2. Click Show Markup Toolbar.
  3. Choose Adjust Size.
  4. Enter the requested width and height, or use Fit into to scale the image within a chosen size.
  5. Keep Scale proportionally selected for an undistorted result.
  6. Leave Resample image enabled when you need new pixel dimensions. Deselect it only when your goal is to change dimensions without resampling the image detail.
  7. Use File > Export or save a copy so the original remains intact.

If you need an exact width and height that would distort the screenshot, decide whether to unlock the proportions or crop/add canvas area first. After export, check the resulting dimensions rather than relying only on the values you entered.

Android: crop in Photos or Gallery; use a resizer for exact pixels

On Android, screenshot capture and editing controls vary by device maker, Android version, and photo app. Google’s help covers capturing, viewing, editing, and sharing screenshots; on many devices, screenshots appear in Google Photos or Gallery. The Google Photos editing guide documents cropping and aspect-ratio tools, not a universal dialog for entering any arbitrary pixel width and height.

  1. Capture with Power + Volume Down, or use the screenshot method documented for your device.
  2. Open Photos or Gallery and find the screenshot, often in a Screenshots folder.
  3. Choose Edit > Crop to adjust the visible composition or select an aspect ratio when that is all the destination requires.
  4. For an exact pixel width and height, transfer the image to a desktop editor or use a reputable image-resizer app that exposes width and height fields.
  5. Save as a copy, then inspect the image details to confirm its dimensions.

Do not assume a crop preset sets exact pixel dimensions: a ratio controls shape, while a pixel-size field controls output dimensions. Before using an unfamiliar resizer, review its permissions and avoid uploading private screenshots to a service you do not trust.

iPhone and iPad: make a repeatable resize shortcut

Apple describes resizing an image as an example of an action that transforms information in Shortcuts. A shortcut can apply a resize workflow to selected screenshots and save or share the result. Action names and availability can vary by iOS or iPadOS release.

  1. In the Shortcuts app, create a shortcut and add Select Photos.
  2. Add the image resize or transform action available on your device. Set the desired width; leave height automatic if you want to preserve proportions.
  3. Add Save to Photo Album or a Share action.
  4. Run the shortcut on the screenshot and inspect the resulting image dimensions.

If the shortcut action exposes only one dimension or a proportional option, it may not produce an arbitrary fixed width and height without cropping or distortion. Check the output before submitting it to a service with strict requirements.

When a desktop image editor is the better fit

Built-in tools are usually enough for one-off resizing. Adobe Photoshop’s Image Size controls include Dimension, Fit To, Constrain, Width, Height, Resolution, and Resample. That level of control can help with repeatable settings, batch work, and resolution metadata, but it is not necessary just to resize an occasional screenshot.

Whatever editor you choose, check these settings before saving:

  • Are width and height shown in pixels, not another unit?
  • Is the aspect ratio locked or unlocked as intended?
  • Is resampling enabled if new pixel dimensions are required?
  • Is the output format accepted by the destination?
  • Are you saving a copy rather than overwriting the only original?

Make screenshots the same size every time

For consistent outputs, use the same target dimensions and the same rule for handling screenshots with different proportions. A locked-ratio resize may leave unused space or produce dimensions that do not match both target values. To fill a fixed rectangle without distortion, crop to the target ratio first and then resize. To preserve the entire image inside a fixed rectangle, resize proportionally and add canvas area if your editor supports it.

For a repeatable process, keep a note of the target pixel dimensions, aspect-ratio choice, crop rule, and output format. On desktop, use the same editor settings each time. On iPhone or iPad, a shortcut can standardize the action sequence; on Android, use an app or editor that exposes the exact pixel fields you need. Verify the saved file rather than assuming that repeating the same taps guarantees the same result.

For website screenshots, set the capture viewport instead

If you have not captured the image yet and need a website screenshot at a particular size, set the browser viewport or capture dimensions before taking it. Resizing afterward changes the image pixels but does not recreate page layout at a different browser width. A narrower viewport may trigger a mobile layout, while scaling a desktop screenshot afterward only shrinks or stretches its existing content.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a screenshot of a URL as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. You can configure a viewport, then resize the saved image separately if you need a specific exported pixel size. Its clean-shot steps accept cookie or consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. See ScreenshotNeo and the API documentation.

Example cURL request:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Troubleshooting common resize problems

The image looks stretched

The width and height were likely changed independently. Undo the resize or reopen the original, lock the aspect ratio, and enter one target dimension. If both dimensions are mandatory, crop to the target ratio first or accept that unlocking the ratio will distort the image.

The saved image does not have the requested dimensions

Check that the editor was set to pixels and that resampling was enabled. A crop or fit-within operation can change composition or scale without making both dimensions equal to the requested values. Inspect the exported file’s image details after saving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Text became difficult to read

Downscaling removes pixel information, and upscaling cannot recover detail absent from the original. If legibility matters, capture at the needed viewport and scale, or use a less aggressive reduction. Review the exported image at the size people will actually see.

The file is still too large to upload

Pixel dimensions and bytes on disk are separate constraints. Keep the required dimensions, then choose an allowed format or compression setting if the destination permits it. Confirm both the dimensions and file size after export.

The phone editor has no width and height fields

Crop and aspect-ratio controls are not necessarily exact-pixel resizing controls. Use a desktop editor or a reputable resizer app that explicitly accepts pixel values, then verify the result.

A website looks different after resizing its screenshot

Post-capture resizing cannot reflow the page. Capture again at the intended viewport width if you need a different responsive layout, then resize only if the output image still needs a different pixel size.

Publishing screenshots online

Follow the destination’s current image requirements first. Mozilla contributor guidance says that, for loading times and accessibility, “it’s best to keep the dimensions of screenshots under 620 pixels in both height and width.” Treat that as context-specific guidance for that publishing context, not a universal limit for websites or uploads.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does changing a screenshot’s width and height reduce its file size?

Not necessarily. File size also depends on image format, compression, and image content; check the exported file’s byte size separately.

Can I resize a screenshot without losing quality?

A proportional resize avoids stretching, but resampling still changes pixel data. Upscaling cannot add captured detail, and downscaling can remove detail, particularly in small text.

What should I do if a site requires exact dimensions but I do not want distortion?

Crop to the target aspect ratio before resizing, or preserve the whole screenshot and add canvas area if your editor supports it.
