Chrome’s built-in DevTools can capture the page you are viewing, or the full page, but its screenshot menu does not promise a JPEG file. To get a JPEG reliably, capture the page and convert the downloaded image if necessary—or use Chrome’s DevTools Protocol automation interface, which supports JPEG output directly.
Choose the right way to capture the page
First decide what “the page” means for your image. A viewport screenshot contains only the content currently visible in the browser window. A full-page screenshot extends beyond the viewport to include content farther down the document. Then choose whether you need a quick manual capture or an automated JPEG-producing workflow.
| Need | Use | Format caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Quick capture of what is visible | DevTools device toolbar: More options > Capture screenshot | The menu documentation does not guarantee JPEG output for every Chrome version or platform. |
| Capture the full page | DevTools device toolbar: More options > Capture a full size screenshot | Check the downloaded image; convert it if it is not JPEG. |
| Automated screenshot with direct JPEG control | DevTools Protocol, Page.captureScreenshot |
Set format to jpeg; this is an automation interface, not a menu choice. |
| Simple command-line screenshot | Chrome Headless --screenshot |
The documented output is PNG, not JPEG. |
Save a screenshot from Chrome DevTools
- Open the page. Navigate to the webpage or local HTML document in Chrome. Wait for the content you need to appear. If the page is still loading or animating, the screenshot may capture an incomplete state.
- Open DevTools. Use Chrome’s DevTools command or menu. If the device toolbar is not visible, open DevTools’ More options > More tools > Device toolbar.
- Choose the capture scope. In the device toolbar, open More options. Choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot for the page beyond the viewport.
- Inspect the downloaded file. Check its extension and, if possible, its actual format in your image viewer. The DevTools documentation describes the two capture choices but does not specify that they produce JPEG on every Chrome version and platform.
- Convert if needed. If the file is PNG or another format, open it in an image editor and use its export or save-a-copy option to choose JPEG/JPG. Keep the original if you may later need its lossless detail or transparency.
Viewport or full size?
Choose the viewport option when the image should match the visible browser window, such as a dialog, menu, or specific section. Choose the full-size option when you need the page’s below-the-fold content in one capture. A full-page image can be much taller than a normal screen; if the image is for sharing or a document, check readability after conversion and consider whether a PDF would suit the content better.
What the menu does not establish
The screenshot menu is the simplest manual method, but the available documentation does not identify the resulting image format for every version and operating system. Do not assume that choosing a screenshot command also chooses JPEG. Verify the downloaded file, then convert it when needed.

Get JPEG output directly with the DevTools Protocol
For a scripted workflow, Chrome’s DevTools Protocol exposes Page.captureScreenshot. The protocol supports jpeg, png, and webp formats. For JPEG, set format to jpeg; its optional quality value ranges from 0 to 100. The captureBeyondViewport option controls whether the capture can extend beyond the viewport.
These are protocol parameters for software communicating with Chrome, not settings exposed by the ordinary screenshot menu. In an existing DevTools Protocol client, the method call is conceptually:
{"method":"Page.captureScreenshot","params":{"format":"jpeg","quality":85,"captureBeyondViewport":true}}
Use a quality value appropriate to your size-versus-detail tradeoff; 85 above is an example, not a universal best setting. A lower JPEG quality can reduce file size while making compression artifacts more visible, particularly around text and sharp edges. Higher quality generally preserves more detail but may make a larger file. If you need transparency, JPEG is not the right target format; choose PNG or WebP instead.

A complete protocol workflow also has to launch or connect to Chrome, enable the Page domain, navigate to the target, wait for the desired page state, invoke the method, and save the returned image data. The method response contains screenshot data for the client to decode and write as a file. Those connection and file-handling steps depend on the protocol client and runtime you choose; the protocol method itself is not a standalone shell command.
Viewport capture versus capture beyond the viewport
For an image of only the visible browser area, leave the capture within the viewport. Set captureBeyondViewport when the capture should extend beyond that area. This protocol control is separate from the user-facing DevTools command that offers a full-size screenshot, and should not be described as a button in Chrome’s normal menu.
Use Chrome Headless when PNG is acceptable
Chrome Headless provides a command-line screenshot option. Its documented --screenshot command saves screenshot.png in the current working directory, so it is useful for automated PNG capture but is not a direct JPEG export method. The CLI also documents --window-size for choosing screenshot dimensions.

chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,900 https://example.com
This example asks Headless Chrome to capture a 1280-by-900 window and save the documented PNG output. Replace chrome with the executable name or path used on your system if needed. If JPEG is required, convert the PNG afterward or use the DevTools Protocol’s JPEG format option.
Chrome’s documented --print-to-pdf option produces a PDF, not a JPEG. Likewise, Chrome’s print preview is for printing or saving as PDF: on Windows or Linux, open it with Ctrl+P; on Mac, use Command+P. Use PDF when you need a document-style output, rather than treating print preview as an image exporter.
Or skip the browser setup
For an API-based screenshot of a public webpage, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot in PNG, JPEG, or WebP, or a PDF, from a GET request. The supplied one-call example saves its response as shot.webp; it demonstrates the request, not a JPEG-format parameter. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the current request options.

Troubleshoot common problems
The saved file is PNG, not JPEG
This is expected for the documented Chrome Headless --screenshot command, which saves screenshot.png. The DevTools menu also does not document a guaranteed JPEG choice. Convert the image in an editor, or use a DevTools Protocol client and specify format: "jpeg".

The screenshot cuts off content below the fold
You likely captured the viewport rather than the full page. In DevTools’ device toolbar, choose More options > Capture a full size screenshot. In protocol automation, configure capture beyond the viewport as appropriate.
The capture shows a loading state or missing images
Capture only after the content you need has appeared. Pages may load images and other content after the initial document appears, so a screenshot taken too early can be incomplete. For a manual capture, wait and inspect the page before using the menu. In automation, make the capture wait for the page state your task requires; the exact wait mechanism depends on your client.

The local HTML document does not look as expected
Check the document in Chrome before capture. A screenshot records what Chrome rendered, not the HTML source as text. If the document relies on external assets, scripts, fonts, or stylesheets, verify they have loaded and that the page is at the intended size and scroll position.
The JPEG looks soft or has visible artifacts
JPEG is a lossy format. If your protocol client exposes the quality setting, raise its value within the documented 0–100 range, or retain a PNG when crisp text or lossless detail matters more than file size. Conversion from PNG to JPEG can also introduce artifacts; keep the source image if quality is important.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are JPG and JPEG different formats?
No. JPG is a common shortened file extension for JPEG images.
Can I turn a screenshot into a JPEG without changing its dimensions?
Yes. In an image editor, export or save a copy as JPEG while keeping the original pixel dimensions.
Will saving as JPEG keep a transparent background?
No. JPEG does not support transparency; use PNG or WebP if transparent areas must remain transparent.
