There is no single Google Autocomplete API that gives you general Google Search suggestions and keyword search volumes. For SEO and paid-search planning, Google’s official developer route is Keyword Planning in the Google Ads API, particularly KeywordPlanIdeaService.GenerateKeywordIdeas. Google’s Places Autocomplete API is a different product: it predicts places and, optionally, search queries for an interactive location-aware input box. Choose based on whether you need campaign research or live suggestions in an app.
What people mean by “Google Autocomplete API”
The phrase can refer to two different needs: retrieving keyword ideas for research, or suggesting places as someone types into a search field. Google provides services for both, but they return different data and serve different workflows.
- Keyword research: Google Ads API Keyword Planning generates keyword ideas and can provide historical metrics and forecasts. It is aimed at planning advertising campaigns, and its ideas and metrics can also inform SEO research.
- Interactive place search: Places Autocomplete (New) returns predictions while a user types. By default these are place predictions; the API can also return query predictions when requested.
- Not provided by either: a general-purpose endpoint that returns Google Search’s ordinary autocomplete suggestions together with universal, exact search-volume figures. Do not treat the Places service as a keyword-volume API.
Google describes Keyword Planning as able to generate “keyword ideas, ad group themes, historical metrics, and forecast metrics.” Google Ads Help describes Keyword Planner as a way to research keywords for Search campaigns. Those are campaign-planning capabilities, not a promise that every suggested phrase has an exact or universally applicable monthly volume.
Which Google API should you use?
| Question | Google Ads API Keyword Planning | Places Autocomplete (New) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Research and plan keywords for advertising; useful for organizing broader keyword research. | Offer place or query predictions inside an interactive input experience. |
| Typical output | Keyword ideas, ad-group themes, historical statistics, and campaign forecasts. | Ordered place and, optionally, query prediction structures in a JSON response. |
| Targeting controls | Keyword and URL seeds, language, geographic target, network, adult-keyword setting, pagination, and historical-metrics controls. | Input text, field mask, place types, region code, location bias or restriction, and session token. |
| Freshness | Google says historical statistics refresh monthly; it recommends caching because responses do not change frequently. | Predictions are returned in response to a live request and ordered by perceived relevance. That is not a monthly search-volume refresh. |
| Commercial model | Access and terms are tied to Google Ads API and the account setup in use; check current account requirements. | Maps Platform request/session billing and terms apply; check current account-level details before launch. |
For advertising forecasts, treat estimates as scenario outputs, not guaranteed results. Bids, budget, ad quality, location targeting, product, seasonality, and user behavior can affect campaign outcomes.

Use Google Ads API Keyword Planning for keyword research
Build a focused seed set
Start with a manageable list of phrases that describe the product, service, or subject you are investigating. You can supply keyword seeds, a relevant URL seed, or both. A URL seed can help generate ideas related to a landing page; keyword seeds let you direct the query toward a particular topic. Avoid treating a large, unfocused list as automatically better: review the resulting ideas for relevance to the audience and intent you actually care about.
Set the market before comparing ideas
Choose the language and geographic target that match the people you intend to reach. Keyword Planning also exposes a network control, an adult-keyword control, pagination, and a historical-metrics option. These settings affect what you request and how you interpret the returned set. A phrase’s metrics for one language and target are not a universal estimate for every country or campaign.
Prioritize with historical metrics, not autocomplete intuition
Use the generated ideas to expand and organize a seed list, then examine historical metrics in the relevant account and targeting context. Google states that historical statistics refresh monthly and recommends caching results because they do not change frequently. Cache according to your application’s needs rather than repeatedly requesting identical data just to simulate live autocomplete; monthly historical refresh is not evidence of a daily or keystroke-level volume update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep forecasts in their proper role
Forecast metrics are intended to help with campaign-planning scenarios. They can help estimate how a proposed campaign might perform under the assumptions and targeting supplied, but they are not a stable search-volume field for every keyword. Keep the forecast context alongside any figures you report, and do not present forecast output as guaranteed traffic or as an independent measure of organic demand.

Implementation boundary: GenerateKeywordIdeas is an authenticated Google Ads API service, not a public anonymous autocomplete URL. The material available here establishes its input controls and output categories, but does not establish a current API version, authentication walkthrough, complete request schema, or universal quota. Use the current Google Ads API documentation and your account’s current configuration for those details rather than copying a guessed endpoint or request body.
Use Places Autocomplete (New) for an app input box
Places Autocomplete is appropriate when you want a user typing an address, establishment, or location-related query to receive predictions. The API is a POST request to the documented endpoint below; provide the required text in input, request the response fields your interface needs with a field mask, and add location or type constraints only when they suit the experience.
POST https://places.googleapis.com/v1/places:autocomplete

A minimal request-body shape is:
{
"input": "coffee near Union Square"
}
This is the request body shape, not a complete deployable request: authentication and a response field mask are also part of a real integration, and their exact configuration should follow the current Places API documentation and your Google Cloud project settings. The service returns a JSON object. Place predictions are returned by default; set includeQueryPredictions when query predictions are useful to your interface.

Constrain results without confusing location with keyword targeting
Places Autocomplete supports place types and region codes, as well as location bias or restriction. Bias can influence predictions around a location; restriction limits the relevant area. These are controls for place prediction behavior, not substitutes for the language and geo-target settings used in keyword research. Use a session token to group the typing and selection phases when the applicable billing model calls for it.
Design around prediction output
Predictions are ordered by perceived relevance, but they are suggestions for an interactive experience—not a ranked list of SEO opportunities and not a set of search-volume estimates. Your UI should let the user select a prediction, handle the case where no suitable suggestion appears, and request only the fields it needs. Review the current attribution and display requirements for your chosen response fields before shipping.
Can Google autocomplete provide search volume?
Autocomplete suggestions and search-volume metrics answer different questions. A suggestion indicates a prediction presented in a particular product context; a historical metric or forecast from Keyword Planning is a separate advertising-oriented data point with targeting and campaign assumptions. The reviewed Google documentation does not establish a universal volume figure for every autocomplete suggestion.
If your goal is a defensible keyword-prioritization workflow, use Keyword Planning ideas and historical metrics for the market you selected, then keep forecast scenarios distinct from historical statistics. Do not infer volume from suggestion order, nor report a Places prediction as a measure of general Google Search demand.

Operational checks before launch
- Account access: confirm the appropriate Google Ads API or Maps Platform access in the account and project you will use. Exact setup and eligibility can depend on current account terms.
- Billing and limits: verify current billing, quota, and rate-limit details in the relevant Google product documentation and account. No single quota or price can be generalized to all implementations from the available documentation summary.
- Terms and display: check the product-specific API terms and any attribution requirements for the data and interface you build.
- Cache intentionally: Keyword Planning historical statistics refresh monthly, and Google recommends caching because responses do not change frequently. For Places, use session tokens where the billing model calls for them rather than assuming Keyword Planning’s refresh behavior applies.
- Keep context with exported data: store the selected language, geographic target, network, seed and retrieval date with keyword research; retain the campaign assumptions with forecasts.
Troubleshooting common mistakes
“My Places request returned places, not keyword ideas”
That is expected: Places Autocomplete is for place and query predictions in an interactive location-aware experience. For keyword ideas and advertising-oriented metrics, use Google Ads API Keyword Planning.
“I need a public endpoint without Ads account setup”
GenerateKeywordIdeas is an authenticated Google Ads API service. It is not an anonymous Search autocomplete endpoint. Check the current Google Ads API access and account requirements; do not substitute an undocumented endpoint for a supported integration.
“The suggestions do not include volume”
Suggestions are not volume. For campaign research, request Keyword Planning historical metrics where appropriate and interpret them for the selected language and target. Forecasts remain scenario-based and should not be relabeled as historical volume.

“The returned ideas differ from what I expected”
Review the seed phrases or URL, language, geo target, network and other request controls. A different market or seed context can produce a different idea set; verify the values actually sent before comparing results.
Best Value
“My app’s autocomplete billing or attribution is unclear”
Places Autocomplete has Maps Platform request/session billing and product-specific terms. Check the current documentation and account configuration for session handling, billing, and attribution before launch; do not assume Ads API rules apply to Places.
ScreenshotNeo is for screenshot capture, not keyword metrics
If part of your workflow is capturing a page for visual review—for example, preserving how a landing page or search-results page looked—ScreenshotNeo is the screenshot API alternative to try first. It is not a Google autocomplete or keyword-volume service. One GET request can return a screenshot or PDF, and it can also be used through its MCP server by AI agents. Its documented differentiators include removing consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and not billing bot checks, blank pages, or failed loads. See ScreenshotNeo.
Or skip the browser setup
Use a single request to capture a page; this example targets a page for visual inspection, not keyword data. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

A practical decision rule
- Choose Google Ads API Keyword Planning when you need keyword ideas, historical metrics, or campaign forecasts.
- Choose Places Autocomplete (New) when your product needs place or query predictions as a person types.
- Do not use either output as a universal Google Search autocomplete-plus-volume feed; the documented products serve distinct purposes.
