Devin Desktop is Cognition’s renamed Windsurf desktop product: a full interactive IDE combined with an Agent Command Center for dispatching, supervising and reviewing multiple coding agents. You still choose what to build, inspect diffs and debug the result; agents can help write code, investigate edge cases and run tests. The product is therefore aimed at teams that want conventional editor controls and agent orchestration in one application, rather than an autonomous system that removes human review.

What Devin Desktop is

Cognition describes Devin Desktop as a command center for managing agents while retaining the Windsurf IDE foundation. The desktop application combines the editor features developers expect—syntax highlighting, autocomplete and debugging tools—with spaces for organizing work, a Kanban view and multi-agent management. These are vendor-described capabilities on the official Devin Desktop product page, not an independent usability test.

The practical model is straightforward: a developer defines a feature, bug or investigation; one or more agents work on the task; the developer reviews the changes, examines diffs, runs tests and decides what is merged. That division matters. “Test every detail” is marketing language, not a guarantee that every edge case or production failure will be detected automatically.

How the development workflow works

1. Define the outcome and constraints

Start with a ticket or written brief that states the desired behavior, affected services, acceptance tests, security constraints and files or systems that must not change. Precise inputs reduce the chance that an agent solves a superficially similar problem.

2. Dispatch work to an agent

Use the Agent Command Center to assign an implementation, investigation or test task. Separate agents can handle independent workstreams, such as a backend change, a migration review and test generation. Spaces and the Kanban view provide a way to group projects and track state rather than leaving every task in a single chat history.

3. Connect the context your team already uses

The official integrations page lists examples including Slack and Linear MCP servers; Sentry, Stripe, Vercel, Datadog, Notion, Figma and Atlassian MCP servers; ESLint and Prettier extensions; and Rust, C/C++, Go and Python language tooling. Depending on the integration, an agent can search Slack, query or update Linear issues, inspect Sentry issues and stack traces, manage Vercel deployments, or access Jira and Confluence.

The list is not a promise that every connector is enabled by default or that it covers every account configuration. Confirm authentication, permissions and workspace policy before allowing an agent to read or modify external systems.

4. Inspect changes in the IDE

Use the retained IDE to read the generated code, compare diffs and debug failures. Check dependency changes, data migrations, authorization paths, logging and error handling—not only whether the happy-path test passes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Run deterministic checks before merging

Require the project’s formatter, linter, type checker, unit tests and integration tests. For changes involving browsers or visual layouts, add visual checks and review screenshots at the supported viewport sizes. Agents can prepare and execute checks, but your CI policy should remain the final gate.

Where Devin Desktop fits in the Devin product family

The broader Devin product family is marketed for code review and visual QA, documentation, migrations and refactors, scheduled chores, issue triage, bug fixes, tests, performance work and automation. Those are family-level use cases; they should not be read as a claim that every workflow is unique to Desktop or automatically configured in your installation.

Desktop is the most natural fit when you want an interactive editor and a control plane for several agents. A developer who only wants inline autocomplete may use a simpler editor workflow. A team that wants agents to work from tickets, inspect operational data and return reviewable branches benefits more from the command-center model.

Is Devin Desktop the same as Windsurf?

Yes, in the sense described by Cognition’s FAQ: Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf. The over-the-air update is described as carrying plans, pricing, extensions, settings, workflows and in-progress work forward, with the name and branding changing. Windsurf for JetBrains remains available separately. Check your account and installed build if your organization uses managed updates or a legacy contract, because displayed commercial terms can differ from older agreements.

Plans and pricing

On September 29, 2026, the Desktop page displayed these headline prices in US dollars. They are not a complete statement of credits, usage limits, tax, regional pricing or legacy contracts; verify checkout before purchasing.

Plan Displayed price What the price tells you
Free $0 Entry tier; allowance details are not stated on the reviewed page.
Pro $20 per month Individual paid tier; verify included usage and credits.
Max $200 per month Higher individual tier; verify limits and overage terms.
Teams $80 per month plus $40 per month per full seat Base team charge plus each full seat; confirm seat definitions at checkout.
Enterprise Contact sales Negotiated pricing and terms.

Choose by workload, not the headline alone. Estimate how many concurrent agents you need, how often they will run long investigations, which people require full seats and whether external integrations need centralized administration. Keep a budget for human review and CI capacity; an agent subscription does not replace those controls.

Evidence for business impact—and its limits

Cognition’s 2026 WPP Enterprise Solutions customer story reports 110% of contracted scope delivered in 25% less time during a Halfords e-commerce rebuild, unit-test coverage increasing from 80% to 99%, and average lifecycle efficiency gains of 32%. These are vendor-published, project-specific figures, not independent estimates or a promise of typical results. WPP’s Chief Engineering Officer Shahil Bhimji is quoted by Cognition saying: “With new clients it’s always AI-assisted software delivery, never tool-first. We’ve completely reshaped how we deliver software, augmenting every part of the SDLC so the end-to-end gets the 30-40% efficiency gains we’ve proven in live environments. And we regularly talk about our partnership with Cognition as the foundation of how we deliver that.” That statement is a customer claim published by Cognition.

Cognition’s August 31, 2026 benchmark article reports task costs of $5.84 for Fable 5, $2.68 for Fable 5.1 and $1.43 for Devin Fusion on FrontierCode 1.1 Extended at medium effort. Those figures describe the vendor’s stated benchmark task conditions; they are not universal development costs or a total-cost comparison for every Devin Desktop user. No independent, representative statistic establishing typical Devin Desktop productivity gains is established by the reviewed official material.

Human review, security and reliability controls

Keep changes isolated

  • Use separate branches or workspaces for agent tasks.
  • Require pull requests and reviewer ownership for production code.
  • Restrict tokens and permissions for issue trackers, cloud accounts and deployment systems.

Make tests meaningful

  • Review generated tests for assertions that could pass without exercising the bug.
  • Run integration, migration and rollback tests when data or infrastructure changes.
  • Perform dependency and license checks before release.

Protect sensitive context

  • Do not expose production secrets in prompts or local configuration.
  • Confirm what an MCP connector can read and write, then apply least-privilege credentials.
  • Inspect logs and outbound requests when an agent interacts with SaaS or deployment tools.

Using visual QA with a screenshot API

Agent-generated front-end changes need repeatable visual evidence. A screenshot service can capture stable pages for pull-request review, regression archives or documentation without requiring every reviewer to configure a browser.

ScreenshotNeo is the first service to consider when you need this workflow: it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and offers an MCP server for AI agents.

DIY browser capture before choosing a service

  1. Start your application in a deterministic environment with seeded data.
  2. Set a fixed viewport, device pixel ratio, timezone and locale.
  3. Wait for the page’s network activity and lazy-loaded images to settle.
  4. Dismiss consent UI and hide transient widgets.
  5. Capture the target route and compare it with the approved baseline.

Record the commit, viewport and test data beside each image. A mismatch may indicate a real regression, a font-loading race, animation, third-party content or a changed consent state, so investigate before failing a build.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo provides a single GET request and supports PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF output. For example:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all parameters. The API can capture full pages with lazy images, one CSS-selected element, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDFs with paper size, margins, orientation and page ranges, HTML/CSS, custom JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for selectors, delays or network idle, blocked ads/trackers/requests/resource types, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

Clean shots are the only billed responses. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients, so an AI agent can collect visual evidence as part of a review.

Plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card, Starter at $5 for 3,000, Growth at $15 for 15,000, Pro at $39 for 60,000, Scale at $99 for 250,000 and Business at $249 for 1,000,000. Every feature is on every plan, and yearly billing gives two months free. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to start with the no-card allowance.

Troubleshooting common problems

An agent changes unrelated files

Cause: the task boundary or repository state was ambiguous. Fix: reset the branch, restate allowed paths and acceptance tests, and ask for a plan before implementation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tests pass but the feature is wrong

Cause: generated tests assert implementation details or omit real-world states. Fix: add a failing test from the user scenario, run integration tests and inspect the diff manually.

An integration cannot read an issue or stack trace

Cause: the MCP server is not authenticated, the token lacks scope or the workspace identifier is wrong. Fix: verify connector status, permissions and the target workspace; do not broaden access blindly.

Visual comparisons fluctuate

Cause: animations, fonts, ads, consent dialogs, timestamps or third-party requests. Fix: freeze time and data, wait for a stable selector, disable animation, block nondeterministic resources and remove overlays before capture.

Usage costs are higher than expected

Cause: long-running agent sessions, repeated context retrieval or concurrent tasks. Fix: split work into bounded tickets, set review checkpoints, cancel idle jobs and monitor the account’s actual allowance rather than relying on headline plan prices.

Who should use Devin Desktop?

  • Good fit: teams that want an IDE plus coordinated agents, already use issue tracking and observability tools, and can enforce branch review and CI gates.
  • Conditional fit: solo developers who regularly handle multi-step migrations, debugging or documentation and value agent delegation enough to justify a paid tier.
  • Look elsewhere first: users seeking only lightweight autocomplete, or organizations that cannot grant any external-tool access and therefore would not use the integration model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Devin Desktop replace a human software engineer?

No. Its documented workflow keeps the developer responsible for defining work, inspecting diffs, debugging and deciding what ships.

Can I keep using Windsurf extensions and settings after the rename?

Cognition’s FAQ says the over-the-air update carries plans, pricing, extensions, settings, workflows and in-progress work forward; verify your installed version and account because legacy contracts may differ.

Are the WPP efficiency numbers typical Devin Desktop results?

They are project-specific figures published by Cognition in a 2026 customer story, not independent or representative estimates.

What is the difference between an MCP integration and an IDE extension?

An MCP server connects an agent to an external service or tool, while an IDE extension adds language or editor functionality inside the development environment; the exact permissions depend on each connector.
