To change an image’s print resolution in Photoshop without changing its pixels, choose Image > Image Size, turn off Resample, enter the target value in pixels per inch (PPI), and apply it. The print dimensions shown in the dialog will change. Turn Resample on only when you deliberately need new pixel dimensions for a specific physical size.
People commonly call this setting “DPI,” but an image editor is assigning pixels per inch (PPI). DPI properly describes the dots a printer places on paper. The distinction matters because changing an image’s PPI metadata does not create detail; it changes how the existing pixels are distributed over a printed area.
DPI, PPI, pixels and print size: what each term means
Pixel dimensions are the image’s actual data: for example, 1,800 × 1,200 pixels. PPI tells a layout or print system how densely to place those pixels. DPI describes the printer’s output dots; a printer can use several dots to reproduce one image pixel. Image editors and everyday instructions often use “DPI” when they mean PPI.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The relationship is straightforward:
Print size in inches = pixel dimensions ÷ PPI
- An 1,800 × 1,200-pixel file at 100 PPI is 18 × 12 inches.
- The same file at 300 PPI is 6 × 4 inches.
No pixels were added in the second case. The same data is assigned to a smaller physical area, so the potential print density is higher.

How to set resolution in Photoshop without resizing
- Open the image in Photoshop.
- Choose Image > Image Size.
- Turn off (deselect) Resample. This preserves the current pixel width and height.
- Enter the requested value in the Resolution field, using Pixels/Inch as the unit.
- Read the displayed Width and Height in inches. These are the physical dimensions implied by the unchanged pixels at the new PPI.
- Click OK to apply the setting, then save a copy in the format required by your print provider.
Adobe’s current Photoshop guidance describes 300 PPI as a common choice for best print quality unless the printer requires another value. It is a guideline, not a universal rule: the printer, paper, process and viewing distance determine the appropriate setting.
Worked example
Suppose the Image Size dialog reports 1,800 × 1,200 pixels. With Resample off:
| Resolution setting | Pixel dimensions | Implied print size | Did pixel data change? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 PPI | 1,800 × 1,200 | 18 × 12 inches | No |
| 300 PPI | 1,800 × 1,200 | 6 × 4 inches | No |
If a print shop asks for a 6 × 4-inch image at 300 PPI, this file already meets the pixel requirement. If it asks for 12 × 8 inches at 300 PPI, you need 3,600 × 2,400 pixels; changing only the PPI field cannot supply those missing pixels.
When to leave Resample off and when to turn it on
Leave Resample off for a metadata or print-size change
Use this mode when you want to preserve every existing pixel and merely change the physical size assigned to the file. It is the correct choice for questions such as “How do I change DPI without resizing?” The pixel width and height remain constant, while the inch measurements update according to the formula above.

Turn Resample on when pixel dimensions must change
Enable Resample when a job specifies both a physical size and a target PPI and the current pixels do not match. Photoshop then calculates a new pixel grid. Downsampling removes or combines pixels; upsampling estimates new pixels. Upsampling can soften edges or introduce artifacts because it cannot recover detail that was never captured.
- Open Image > Image Size.
- Enable Resample.
- Enter the required physical width and height and the target PPI.
- Check the resulting pixel dimensions before accepting the change.
- Inspect the image at 100% view for halos, jagged edges, softness or repeating patterns.
Keep an untouched original. Export the resampled copy for the specific job rather than overwriting your source.
Calculating the pixels you need before editing
For a required print size, multiply each dimension in inches by the requested PPI:
Required pixels = print inches × target PPI
- 8 × 10 inches at 300 PPI requires 2,400 × 3,000 pixels.
- 11 × 17 inches at 300 PPI requires 3,300 × 5,100 pixels.
For an existing file, divide its pixel dimensions by the target PPI to see the largest print size available without resampling. Keep the aspect ratio in mind: if the requested paper shape differs from the image shape, you must crop or add margins; changing PPI alone will not fix the mismatch.

Choosing a resolution for print, screens and web images
Start with the print provider’s specification. Adobe identifies 300 PPI as typical guidance for best print quality, but some printers require a different value. A large poster viewed from farther away may be acceptable at a lower density, while a small image examined closely may need more pixels. Do not replace a provider’s instruction with a blanket “300 DPI” rule.
Screen and web use
For screens, pixel dimensions determine the image data displayed. Changing the PPI metadata alone does not add on-screen detail or make a web image sharper. Adobe’s general guidance describes 72–96 PPI as typical for screen and web images; treat that as vendor guidance rather than a universal technical standard. Set the pixel width and height required by the destination, and optimize the file format and byte size separately.
GIMP 3.0 alternative
In GIMP 3.0, choose Image > Print Size. The dialog lets you change the printed width, height and output resolution. To preserve the existing pixels while changing only the print assignment, avoid any operation that changes the image’s pixel dimensions. GIMP’s manual also distinguishes image output resolution (PPI) from printer resolution (DPI). Menu labels can differ in other GIMP versions, so verify the version before following interface-specific instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to verify that the change worked
- Reopen the image-size or print-size dialog and confirm the entered PPI is retained.
- Check that pixel width and height stayed the same when Resample was off.
- Confirm the displayed inch dimensions equal pixels divided by PPI.
- For a resampled file, verify that the new pixel dimensions equal the requested inches multiplied by the target PPI.
- Ask the printer or print service whether it expects embedded PPI metadata, a minimum pixel count, a particular color mode or a specific file format. Those requirements are separate from the resolution field.
Common problems and fixes
The image becomes smaller when I enter 300 DPI
This is expected with Resample disabled. The pixels were not deleted; they are assigned to a smaller physical area at the higher PPI. If you need the original physical size at 300 PPI, you need enough pixels for that size and must resample only when appropriate.

The pixel dimensions changed unexpectedly
Resample was probably enabled. Undo the change, reopen Image Size, disable Resample, and enter the PPI again. Also check that you did not type a new width or height while Resample was active.
The printer says the file is low resolution
Compare the requested physical size and PPI with the file’s actual pixel dimensions. A metadata change cannot turn a small source into a detailed large print. Calculate the required pixels, then decide whether a smaller print, a crop, a different source or controlled upsampling is the honest solution.
The print looks soft after upsampling
Upsampling estimates information. Try a less aggressive physical size, obtain a higher-resolution original, or inspect resampling options and sharpening appropriate to the printer’s workflow. Do not claim that changing the PPI field alone restored detail.

The result looks different online but not on paper
Web and screen display is governed primarily by pixel dimensions and the display’s scaling. A PPI metadata edit may affect how a design application places the file, but it does not increase the pixels sent to a browser.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can changing PPI make a low-resolution original suitable for any print size?
No. It can change the size assigned to existing pixels, but a larger print at the same density requires more source pixels. Upsampling estimates missing data and cannot recreate detail.
Why does a printer use the word DPI while Photoshop uses PPI?
DPI refers to the printer’s physical output dots. PPI refers to image pixels assigned per inch. Print workflows connect the two, but they are not the same measurement.
