A full-height (or full-page) screenshot captures the entire scrollable document, not just the part currently visible in your browser window. For a one-off capture in Firefox, right-click an empty area, choose Take Screenshot, select Save full page, then download or copy the image. For repeatable captures, Playwright can create one with await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });.
What a full-height screenshot captures
A normal screenshot records the viewport: the pixels visible without scrolling. A full-height screenshot extends down the page’s scrollable document, as if the page were displayed on a screen tall enough to show everything at once. Firefox labels the two choices Save full page and Save visible; choose the former when you need the complete page.
The result is still an image of the page state at capture time. Content that appears only after a click, login, hover, consent decision, or later network request may not be present. Always open the saved file and check the sections, images, menus, and footer you expected.
Fastest no-code method: Firefox Screenshot
- Open the page you want to capture in Firefox.
- Right-click an empty area of the page and select Take Screenshot. The keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows and Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- In the capture bar at the upper right, select Save full page. Do not choose Save visible unless you want only the current viewport.
- Choose Download to save an image file, or Copy to place the image on the clipboard. Firefox also documents Ctrl+S/Command+S for saving and Ctrl+C/Command+C for copying.
This is the best route for a single page when you do not need a script, naming convention, or batch process.

Firefox Developer Tools and Web Console options
Enable the full-page screenshot button
- Open Firefox Developer Tools.
- Open Developer Tools settings and find Available Toolbox Buttons.
- Enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Click the screenshot icon in the Developer Tools toolbar. Firefox saves the image in the browser’s Downloads folder by default.
This route is useful when you are already inspecting a page or need a repeatable developer-tool workflow.
Use the :screenshot Web Console helper
Firefox’s Web Console provides a :screenshot helper with options including --fullpage, --filename, --delay, --dpr, and clipboard controls. A typical command is:
:screenshot --fullpage --filename=page.pngUse --delay when you need to capture a timed state, such as a menu that appears after a hover or a short animation. Use --dpr to control device-pixel-ratio output. Change the filename between repeated captures: Firefox overwrites an existing file with the same name.
The helper captures the page as it exists when the command runs; a delay is not a universal lazy-loading solution. If a site fills content only after scrolling or interaction, perform that interaction first and verify the output.

Automate full-page screenshots with Playwright
Playwright’s screenshot API uses the fullPage option (spelled full_page in Python). Set the viewport before navigation when the screenshot must represent a particular responsive width; changing width can alter line wrapping, menus, and the amount of content loaded.

Use Firefox when convenience matters most. Use Playwright when you need the same URL, viewport, and capture procedure to run repeatedly. None of the cited documentation establishes a universal maximum page height, speed comparison, or reliability ranking, so test your own pages—especially very long documents.
Checks before you trust the image
- Confirm the scope: a full-page image should include content below the fold, not merely the visible viewport.
- Check lazy content: images or sections that load after scrolling may be absent. Scroll or trigger the required interaction before capture, then recapture.
- Check overlays: cookie dialogs, chat bubbles, newsletter prompts, and open menus can obscure content. Close or accept them when you control the page.
- Check responsive width: a narrow viewport may create a mobile layout, while a wide one may expose desktop navigation. Choose deliberately.
- Check the bottom: verify the footer and final sections are present and not cut off.
- Check file handling: avoid reusing a Firefox custom filename unless overwriting is intentional.
Common problems and fixes
Only the visible viewport was saved
You selected Save visible or omitted Playwright’s full-page option. Run Firefox’s Save full page action, or use fullPage: true (JavaScript) / full_page=True (Python).
Images or sections are missing
The page may load them after interaction, scrolling, or a later request. Trigger the required state before capture, add an appropriate wait in your script, and inspect the output. A delay alone cannot guarantee that every lazy-loaded resource appears.
The layout is the wrong size
Set the intended viewport before navigation. Responsive breakpoints can change when you resize after the page has already loaded.

A menu or hover state is not shown
Open or hover the control before capturing. Firefox’s :screenshot --delay can preserve a timed state, but it does not create the state for you.
The image is unexpectedly huge or awkward
Extremely tall documents can produce very large images and may contain dynamic regions that do not compose as expected. Capture a stable page state, consider an element-level image for a specific section, or produce several purposeful captures instead of one unreadable canvas.
Playwright cannot launch
Install the package and the browser binaries in the same environment, then rerun the script. In CI, also verify that the runtime has permission to launch a headless browser and write to the destination path.

Cost, performance, and reliability considerations
Firefox and Playwright run on your machine, so you manage browser startup, CPU, memory, storage, and any authentication. Playwright is usually the better fit for scheduled jobs because the procedure, viewport, and output path can be version-controlled. It still requires page-specific waits and validation.

Is “full-height” different from “full-page”?
In this context they mean the same thing: an image of the scrollable document beyond the visible viewport.
Can I copy a full-page Firefox screenshot without downloading it?
Yes. In the capture interface choose Copy; Firefox also documents Ctrl+C on Windows/Linux and Command+C on macOS.
