Image-generation API quotas are not one universal “images per day” number. A provider can limit requests, input tokens, generated images, spending, or several of these at once, with different scopes and reset windows. To find out why a request stopped, check the limit for your model and account, then read the error code and response headers before deciding whether to wait, slow traffic, or fix billing.
What an image-generation API quota measures
A quota is a provider-enforced ceiling on API use. It can apply to one or more counters over one or more time windows. The first applicable limit you reach can block a request, even if your usage remains below other limits.
Common quota dimensions
- Requests per minute or day: Limits how many API calls you can make, regardless of how many images each call produces.
- Tokens per minute or day: Constrains token use where the model and endpoint count input or output tokens. A token-heavy request may hit this limit before a request-count limit.
- Images per minute: Some image-capable models have an image-specific throughput limit. It is distinct from a request limit; one request may ask for more than one image.
- Spend or usage ceilings: An account or project may have a financial limit that blocks calls even when a short-window rate limit has not been reached.
OpenAI documents request, token and, for some models, image-per-minute limits. Google’s Gemini documentation describes requests per minute, input tokens per minute, requests per day, and image-per-minute limits for image-capable models. Which dimensions apply depends on the provider, model and account.
Why there is no single images-per-day answer
Limits can vary by model, usage tier, account standing, configured spend ceiling, and provider capacity. They can also apply at different account boundaries. A number quoted for one model or account is not a dependable promise for another. Check the live limits shown for the account and model that will make the call.

For Gemini, Google says limits apply per project, not per API key, and that requests-per-day quotas reset at midnight Pacific time. Its rate-limit documentation also cautions that specified rates are not guaranteed and actual capacity may vary. Do not assume that another provider uses the same project scope or reset clock.
OpenAI’s guidance describes organization-scope request rate limits in some cases and project-scoped token headers where applicable. Scope is therefore limit-specific, not a universal property of an API key. If several keys or applications share an organization or project, their usage may draw on the same applicable pool.
How to find the limit for your account
OpenAI
- Open the limits area in your OpenAI account settings and check the model and account context relevant to your request.
- For a rate-limited response, inspect the response headers. Depending on the limit, headers can include
x-ratelimit-limit-requests,x-ratelimit-remaining-requests, andx-ratelimit-reset-requests, plus corresponding token fields. - Use the returned values to understand the current constraint and its reset timing. The header guide’s sample values—including 60 permitted requests, 59 remaining, and a one-second reset—are illustrative examples, not default quotas or a promise about your account.
Gemini
- Check active rate limits in Google AI Studio for the project and model making the calls.
- Review the model, usage tier and account status. Google says limits update automatically with tier and account status; published rates are not guaranteed capacity.
- For requests-per-day limits, account for the documented reset at midnight Pacific time. Do not apply that reset rule to another provider or to a different quota dimension without confirmation.
Google’s current rate-limit documentation, accessed in 2026, lists spend-rate limits of $10 per 10 minutes for Tier 1, $50 per 10 minutes for Tier 2, and $200 per 10 minutes for Tier 3 where those spend-based limits apply. These are spend-rate limits—not image counts or guaranteed individual entitlements. Treat them as provider- and tier-specific policy values, not as a way to calculate a universal number of images.

Why an image-generation API returns 429
HTTP 429 means the request was refused under a limit or quota condition; it does not, by itself, tell you which condition or what to do next. Read the provider’s error code and message along with the response headers and account usage.

OpenAI documents these as materially different 429 cases: request throttling, a traffic increase that is too fast, exhausted prepaid credits, organization or project spend limits, and an assigned usage ceiling. Gemini documents 429 RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED for spend-based limits. The status code alone is not enough to identify the remedy.
When to wait, retry, or change billing
For a temporary rate limit
If the response includes a valid Retry-After, treat it as the minimum time to wait before retrying. If it is absent or invalid, use bounded exponential backoff with jitter: increase the delay after successive failures, add random variation so concurrent workers do not retry together, and cap both retry count and total retry time. OpenAI’s image-generation guide says to retry transient rate-limit and server failures with backoff.

Unsuccessful requests can themselves contribute to per-minute limits, so immediate repeated retries can make throttling worse. Avoid stacking multiple retry loops: official OpenAI SDKs retry eligible rate-limit and server errors, so application-level retries should account for any SDK retries already in effect.
For credit, spend, or quota errors
Fix the account condition first. Add credits if prepaid funds are exhausted, or review the relevant spend or usage ceiling and request or apply an approved change if that is the cause. OpenAI’s error guidance says retrying billing, spend, or quota errors will not restore access. Do not keep replaying the same request while the underlying limit remains in place.

Google’s guidance for a spend-related 429 RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED is to wait and retry after a short period, reduce the rate of expensive requests, or request an increase if normal usage consistently reaches the limit. First verify that the error is in fact a spend-based limit; not every 429 is transient or has the same remedy.

Plan image-generation throughput around every limit
Estimate workload against all applicable counters rather than dividing a single quota by the number of images you want. For example, a batch that uses few API calls but many images could encounter an image-per-minute ceiling; a request-heavy workflow could hit a request limit even if each call is small. Token-heavy prompts can introduce another constraint, while a daily limit or spend ceiling can govern longer-term usage.
- Identify the exact model and endpoint used by each workload.
- Check the live request, token, image and spend constraints that apply, including their scope.
- Measure actual application traffic and usage; do not infer a provider’s quota from another account’s example headers.
- Set worker concurrency and retry limits so a temporary slowdown does not trigger a synchronized burst.
- Track responses and account usage so you can distinguish a short-window throttle from a daily or billing limit.
There is no universally established cross-provider image allowance. Provider documentation describes model- and account-specific values rather than a general number of images per day. Limits and capacity can change, so treat the provider’s current account view and actual responses as authoritative.

When comparing providers for a production workflow, compare the constraints that affect your workload—not just a headline request rate. Look at request, token, image and spend dimensions; the organization, project or other scope; the reset semantics; whether remaining usage and reset timing are visible; and how the provider distinguishes transient throttling from billing or invalid-request failures. Also account for changes by model, tier, account standing and capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a 429 always mean I should wait?
No. A 429 can be temporary throttling, but it can also indicate exhausted credits, a spend ceiling, an assigned usage limit, or another request problem. Use the error details to identify the condition before retrying.
Can I estimate an exact image quota from an API’s request limit?
Not reliably. Request counts and image-per-minute limits are different dimensions, and the applicable limits depend on the model and account.
