A serverless browser is a browser runtime hosted and operated by a cloud provider that your application controls through an API or automation protocol. You send a task or connect with Playwright, Puppeteer, CDP, or a provider SDK; the provider starts or assigns a browser, runs the work, and returns page data or an artifact such as a screenshot or PDF. You do not install Chromium on your own server, but you still write the automation, secure credentials, handle failures, and pay according to the provider’s usage model.

What “serverless browser” means

“Serverless browser” is a descriptive term, not a formal standard with one required architecture. A service may expose a single-request endpoint for a screenshot or extraction job, a full interactive browser session, or both. Some sessions are short-lived and isolated; others can be reconnected to or retain cookies and local storage. Do not assume that every service is ephemeral, Chromium-only, or compatible with every browser API.

In a typical managed implementation, the provider launches an isolated browser environment, accepts commands over a remote connection, and destroys or parks the session when the work ends. That is one vendor’s architecture example rather than a universal rule. Playwright itself supports Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, while an individual hosted provider may offer only a subset.

How a serverless browser request works

  1. Define the browser task. Common jobs include navigating a logged-in workflow, rendering a JavaScript application, taking a screenshot, creating a PDF, extracting structured data, crawling pages, or allowing an AI agent to browse.
  2. Choose an interface. A stateless HTTP action is suitable for a single artifact. Interactive work normally uses Playwright, Puppeteer, CDP, Stagehand, or a vendor SDK.
  3. Open or allocate a browser. The provider assigns a managed browser session, applies its runtime and networking policy, and returns a connection endpoint or accepts the request directly.
  4. Run commands and collect output. Your code performs navigation, waits, clicks, authentication, JavaScript evaluation, downloads, or extraction, then receives page data or an artifact.
  5. End or preserve the session. Close the session when finished. If a workflow spans requests, use the provider’s documented reconnect or persistence feature and understand exactly which cookies, storage, and files survive.

Why teams use hosted browsers

Running browsers yourself means provisioning machines or containers, installing compatible binaries, applying security updates, managing fonts and dependencies, scaling concurrent sessions, and cleaning up browser state. A hosted service takes over much of that fleet work. Cloud browser products also package capabilities such as screenshots, PDFs, downloads, structured extraction, crawling, and agent browsing.

“Serverless” does not mean maintenance-free. Your team still owns selectors and test logic, retries, authentication flows, data protection, timeout choices, observability, and cost controls. Provider outages, browser crashes, anti-bot systems, changing page layouts, and site terms remain your problems to design for. Claims that hosted browsers are always cheaper, faster, or more reliable than self-hosting require a workload-specific benchmark.

Stateless actions versus interactive sessions

Stateless actions

A stateless endpoint accepts parameters such as a URL and returns a result in one request. It is a good fit for public-page screenshots, PDFs, metadata extraction, or a short crawl where no browser state must be reused. Simpler APIs reduce connection management and are easier to queue and retry.

Interactive sessions

An interactive session gives code a live page and browser context. Use it for multi-step checkout tests, applications requiring clicks and form entry, authenticated dashboards, file uploads, or agent workflows. Sessions consume capacity while open, so set explicit timeouts and close them in error handlers. If you reconnect, verify whether the provider counts that as a new connection and whether state is preserved.

Using Playwright with a hosted browser

The exact connection code depends on the provider, but the pattern is consistent: create a remote endpoint, connect with the library, perform work, and close the connection. Keep credentials in environment variables rather than source control.

import asyncio
from playwright.async_api import async_playwright

async def main():
    async with async_playwright() as p:
        browser = await p.chromium.connect_over_cdp(
            "wss://provider.example/connect?token=YOUR_TOKEN"
        )
        context = await browser.new_context()
        page = await context.new_page()
        await page.goto("https://example.com", wait_until="networkidle")
        print(await page.title())
        await page.screenshot(path="page.png", full_page=True)
        await context.close()
        await browser.close()

asyncio.run(main())

Replace the placeholder endpoint with the provider’s documented WebSocket or CDP URL. Some services instead provide a Playwright endpoint, Puppeteer connection helper, or a task-specific HTTP API. Confirm supported browser engines, authentication headers, maximum session length, and whether networkidle is appropriate for pages that keep long polling connections open.

What to compare before choosing a service

Decision area Questions to answer
Workload Do you need one request for a screenshot/PDF, or a live browser with clicks, downloads, and authentication?
Integration Are Playwright, Puppeteer, CDP, Stagehand, or your existing SDK supported? How much migration work is required?
Browser engines Is Chromium enough, or must you test Firefox or WebKit? Are the provider’s branded and bundled builds suitable?
State Are sessions ephemeral? Can you reconnect? How are cookies, local storage, profiles, and files retained or deleted?
Capacity What are concurrency limits, cold-start behavior, regions, maximum session duration, queueing rules, and logging or replay windows?
Billing Is pricing based on browser time, requests, connections, data transfer, proxies, included quotas, or overages?
Security How are credentials isolated, what data is retained, and do deployment, compliance, or private-network requirements rule out a shared service?
Operations Can you inspect console logs, network errors, traces, recordings, and per-task usage?

Examples of current service models

Cloudflare Browser Run

Cloudflare documents quick actions for stateless screenshots, PDFs, and scraping, alongside browser sessions controlled with Puppeteer, Playwright, CDP, or Stagehand. Its documented use cases also include structured extraction, crawling, and AI-agent browsing. Limits and pricing should be checked on the current Cloudflare documentation before committing.

Browserless

Browserless describes cloud browsers compatible with Playwright and Puppeteer, plus APIs for screenshots, PDFs, and downloads. It documents session reconnects and deployment options that include self-hosting. Its pricing model defines one usage unit as up to 30 seconds per browser connection (pricing page accessed September 29, 2026); longer sessions consume additional units, and reconnects count as new connections. That is a vendor billing rule, not an industry-wide definition.

Browserbase

Browserbase presents a model of a fresh, isolated hosted Chromium instance controlled over CDP and torn down at session end. Treat that description as an example of its own service, not a guarantee that every serverless browser behaves identically.

Reliability, performance, and cost engineering

Make waits deterministic

Prefer waiting for a specific selector or application state over arbitrary sleeps. Use a short navigation timeout plus a longer task deadline, and capture console and network errors when a run fails. Pages with ads, analytics, streaming, or long-lived sockets may never become truly idle.

Control concurrency

Set a queue in your application, cap parallel sessions below the provider limit, and apply exponential backoff for launch or rate-limit errors. Reuse a session only when its state is safe to share; otherwise create isolated contexts to prevent account or cookie leakage.

  • Wide Application: The server rack wall mount maximizes the use of available space, suitable for retail venues, classrooms, offices, and other places where space is limited.

Estimate the bill

Count browser launches, average session duration, retries, reconnects, proxy or transfer charges, and scheduled jobs. A fast page that is retried five times can cost more than a slower successful run. Record a request ID, provider usage response, URL class, duration, and final verdict so unexpected charges can be explained.

Protect data

Use least-privilege tokens, rotate them, redact secrets from logs, and avoid placing passwords in URLs. Check retention and deletion behavior for screenshots, PDFs, recordings, cookies, and downloaded files. For regulated workloads, verify isolation and regional processing in writing rather than relying on the word “serverless.”

Troubleshooting common failures

Connection or launch timeout

Likely causes: exhausted concurrency, a cold start, an invalid endpoint, or a network policy blocking WebSockets. Fix: verify the endpoint and token, increase the connect timeout within the provider’s limit, cap your own queue, and retry with bounded exponential backoff.

Page loads but content is missing

Likely causes: the app has not finished client rendering, a selector changed, or an API request failed. Fix: wait for a stable selector, inspect console and network logs, confirm the correct browser engine, and capture the response status for required API calls.

Authentication disappears between steps

Likely causes: a new context was created, the session ended, or cookies are not persisted. Fix: keep the same context for the workflow, use the documented reconnect feature, and explicitly test storage persistence instead of assuming it.

CAPTCHA or bot challenge

Hosted IP ranges can trigger defenses. Do not attempt to bypass controls that the site forbids. Review the site’s access policy, slow request rates, use an approved integration, or ask the site owner for a test path.

Unexpected usage

Look for reconnects counted as new connections, retries after partial failures, long idle sessions, and parallel jobs. Add a hard deadline and close browsers in a finally block.

Or skip the browser setup: ScreenshotNeo

For a screenshot or PDF rather than an interactive workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a single HTTP request. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and whether it was billed.

Example with cURL (the full parameter reference is in the ScreenshotNeo docs):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server for AI clients such as Claude and Cursor, with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. Features include full-page lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets, retina scale, PDF controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, click and wait actions, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. When self-hosting is still the better choice

Run browsers in your own infrastructure when you need a private network path, strict data residency, custom patched binaries, predictable reserved capacity, or complete control over retention and observability. Self-hosting trades provider convenience for responsibility: image and browser updates, sandboxing, autoscaling, crash recovery, and security patching become yours.

FAQ

Is a serverless browser the same as serverless functions?

No. A serverless browser is a managed browser runtime. It may be invoked by a serverless function, container, VM, or ordinary application; the terms describe different layers.

Can serverless browsers test Firefox and Safari?

Only if the chosen provider offers those engines. Playwright supports Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, but hosted products may expose a narrower set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a hosted browser hide my traffic from the destination site?

No. The destination sees the provider’s network identity and browser behavior. Review proxy, region, and acceptable-use policies before automating a site.
