Deploy Playwright on Azure Functions by packaging your function code, a pinned Playwright version, its matching browser binaries, and Linux system dependencies in a custom Linux container. Push that image to a container registry and deploy it to a Functions-compatible container host, commonly Azure Container Apps. Verify the current Azure Functions deployment matrix before choosing a plan: Flex Consumption is listed as code-only, while container-image support varies by plan and operating system.
The container is the important boundary. A normal code deployment does not automatically provide the browser executable or every native library Chromium, Firefox, or WebKit needs. Rebuild the image whenever code, Playwright, browser binaries, dependencies, or the Functions base image changes.
1. Choose the hosting model before writing the Dockerfile
Azure Functions has different deployment technologies for Linux and Windows and for each hosting plan. Microsoft’s Deployment technologies in Azure Functions matrix should be your first stop because support for custom container images is not identical across plans. In the cited matrix, Flex Consumption is code-only; other plans list different container options. Treat the matrix as a prerequisite, not an implementation detail.
| Decision | What to verify | Why it matters to Playwright |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Linux support for the selected plan and container method | Playwright’s documented dependency installation and the container examples are Linux-oriented. |
| Hosting target | Whether the image runs as a Linux Functions-hosted container or in Azure Container Apps | The resource creation, deployment command and CI/CD task differ. |
| Runtime limits | Request duration, memory, concurrency and scaling behavior for your workload | Browser startup and page rendering are workload-specific; the documentation does not guarantee suitable limits for every plan. |
| Image operations | Where the image is built, stored, scanned and updated | Every code or dependency change requires a new image and deployment. |
For a containerized Functions application, Azure Container Apps is a common destination. Microsoft’s containerized Functions quickstart describes the general flow: build a Linux image, publish it to a registry, create or configure the Container Apps resources, and deploy the image.

2. Prepare a Function project that launches Playwright
The following example uses a Node.js Function. Keep the Playwright package version explicit so the package and browser revision remain aligned. The same deployment principles apply to Python, .NET and Java, but the dependency files and Functions base image are language-specific.
Install the package and create a minimal handler
- Create or open a Node.js Azure Functions project with an HTTP-triggered function.
- Install Playwright as a production dependency:
npm install playwright. - Use a handler that launches and closes the browser for each invocation while you establish correctness. Reuse strategies can be evaluated later against your concurrency and isolation requirements.
const { app } = require('@azure/functions');
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
app.http('render', {
methods: ['GET'],
authLevel: 'function',
handler: async (request, context) => {
const target = request.query.get('url');
if (!target) {
return { status: 400, jsonBody: { error: 'Pass ?url=https://example.com' } };
}
let browser;
try {
browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto(target, { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
const title = await page.title();
return { status: 200, jsonBody: { title, url: page.url() } };
} finally {
await browser?.close();
}
}
});
In production, validate and restrict destination URLs if this endpoint can be called by untrusted users. A browser function that accepts arbitrary URLs can become a server-side request forgery path into internal services.
3. Build the Linux image with matching browsers and libraries
A container must contain four coordinated pieces: the Functions language runtime, your application, the Playwright package, and the browser binaries plus operating-system libraries required by those binaries. Playwright’s browser documentation states that browser versions track Playwright releases. Its Linux installation command can install browser dependencies as well as the browser.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Dockerfile pattern
Use a currently supported Azure Functions Linux base image for your language and runtime. Azure updates its Functions base images, so select the tag documented for your project at build time rather than treating an old tag as permanent. The pattern below shows the required order; substitute the supported Node Functions image tag for your selected runtime.

WORKDIR /home/site/wwwroot
COPY package*.json ./
RUN npm ci --omit=dev
COPY . .
# Installs the browser revision matching the package and Linux dependencies.
RUN npx playwright install --with-deps chromium
Build with an explicit, reviewed base-image value, for example by supplying it through your CI pipeline. Do not silently mix a Playwright package from one release with an unrelated Microsoft Playwright image or browser cache. The official Playwright Docker guidance warns that mismatched versions can prevent the browser executable from being located.
Alternative language packaging
For Python, put the pinned playwright package in requirements.txt, install it in the image, and run the matching Playwright browser installation command during the image build. For .NET or Java, use the corresponding Functions base image and language package manager, then install browsers and Linux dependencies in the image. Follow the Playwright guide for that language; the invariant is that installation occurs at build time, not during a request.
4. Build and test locally before Azure
- Build the image with your selected Functions base image and a tag that identifies the application version:
docker build --build-arg FUNCTIONS_BASE_IMAGE=YOUR_SUPPORTED_FUNCTIONS_IMAGE -t your-registry.example/playwright-functions:version1 . - Run the container using the environment variables and port convention required by your Functions base image.
- Invoke the HTTP trigger with a known public page and inspect logs for browser-launch errors, missing shared libraries, navigation timeouts and memory pressure.
- Test a page that uses delayed JavaScript and one that contains a consent dialog. Confirm your wait strategy and cleanup behavior rather than assuming
networkidleis appropriate for every site.
Keep the image test reproducible. Record the Functions base-image digest or tag, Playwright package version, browser channel and operating-system package state used by each release.
5. Push the image and deploy to Azure Container Apps
- Create or select a container registry that your Azure deployment can read.
- Authenticate Docker to the registry and tag the local image with its fully qualified registry name.
- Push the image:
docker push your-registry.example/playwright-functions:version1. - Create or configure the Azure Container Apps environment and the containerized Functions app using Microsoft’s current containerized Functions quickstart for the required settings, identity and ingress.
- Point the app at the pushed image, configure registry credentials or managed identity, set application settings and secrets, and deploy.
- Call the Function endpoint and verify a complete browser launch, navigation, response and browser shutdown in Azure logs.
The exact Azure CLI flags and resource names change with the Container Apps and Functions experience. Use the current Microsoft quickstart rather than copying a command set tied to an older API version. The quickstart cited for this workflow was updated on 2026-08-08.

Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.
6. Automate image builds and releases
A production deployment should rebuild on source, package, browser or base-image changes. Azure documents CI/CD routes including Azure Pipelines and GitHub Actions. Select the pipeline task for the actual target: Container Apps deployment and Linux Functions-hosted-container deployment use different Azure Pipelines tasks.
- Pin the Playwright version and review dependency updates deliberately.
- Build once, scan and test the image, then promote the same digest between environments.
- Publish immutable tags or digests instead of reusing a floating tag.
- Keep registry credentials in the pipeline’s secret store or use a managed identity.
- Schedule base-image refreshes; Azure recommends regularly updating the Functions base image and redeploying.
- After deployment, run a smoke test that launches the browser, loads a controlled URL and records duration, exit status and memory usage.
7. Runtime settings that affect reliability
Browser lifecycle
Always close contexts and browsers in a finally path. Leaked processes accumulate across warm invocations and eventually cause failed launches. If you reuse a browser to reduce startup work, isolate requests with separate contexts and test crash recovery.
Navigation and waits
Choose a wait condition that matches the page. A selector wait is usually more deterministic for an application you control; a bounded delay can accommodate a known animation; network-idle waits can be unsuitable for pages with persistent connections. Set explicit timeouts and return a useful error rather than allowing an invocation to hang.
Recommended Free Tools
Resources and scaling
Measure your own pages in the exact Azure plan and region you intend to use. The cited documentation does not establish universal memory, duration, concurrency or scaling values for Playwright workloads. Validate cold starts, simultaneous browser launches, large PDFs or screenshots, and the behavior when a browser crashes.

Security
- Do not expose unrestricted navigation to arbitrary callers.
- Store credentials, cookies and authorization headers as secrets; never bake them into the image.
- Run with the least network access that still reaches required sites and services.
- Review downloaded content and temporary files, especially when handling untrusted pages.
8. Troubleshooting checklist
“Executable doesn’t exist” or browser launch failure
Usually the browser was not installed in the image, the install ran in a different layer or the Playwright package and browser revision are mismatched. Rebuild with the same pinned package used at runtime, run the browser installation command during the image build, and inspect the final image rather than installing on container startup.
Missing shared-library errors
Install Linux dependencies with Playwright’s supported install --with-deps flow in a compatible Linux base image. If the base image changed, rebuild and retest; do not copy libraries from an unrelated distribution.
Works locally but fails in Azure
Compare the local and deployed image digest, environment variables, architecture, filesystem permissions, outbound network rules and available memory. Confirm that Azure is pulling the newly pushed tag or digest and that the selected plan supports the container method.
Timeouts or blank responses
Log the URL, navigation phase and elapsed time, then test with a bounded timeout and a simpler page. The cause may be a target site’s bot challenge, an unreachable domain, a page that never becomes idle or insufficient resources. Do not infer that a timeout is an Azure Functions platform defect without isolating those cases.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install Playwright browsers when the Function starts?
You can technically run installation commands at runtime, but it makes cold starts, permissions, network access and repeatability unpredictable. Put browsers and Linux dependencies in the image instead.
Which browser should I package?
Package the browser channels your tests or capture workflow requires, using the binaries associated with the exact Playwright package version in the image.
Is Azure Container Apps the only possible host?
No. The supported destination depends on the current Azure Functions plan and operating-system matrix. Container Apps is a common containerized Functions choice, but verify alternatives in Microsoft’s deployment documentation.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
