Choose a hosted REST capture API when you need an occasional screenshot without operating a browser. Choose Puppeteer or Playwright when screenshots are one step in a larger automated workflow. Choose a persistent browser connection when a session must stay open across many commands. The right option depends on control, browser infrastructure, session lifetime, and the fidelity settings your pages require.
The three implementation choices
Web capture is not one feature with one universal SDK. There are three practical architectures:
- Browser automation library: your application launches or connects to a browser and controls navigation, interaction, network behavior and capture.
- Hosted REST capture: your application sends a URL and capture options to a service that operates the browser for one task and returns an image.
- Persistent browser connection: your application opens a browser session over a protocol such as Chrome DevTools Protocol or WebDriver BiDi, keeps the page alive and issues multiple commands.
Chrome for Developers describes Puppeteer as a JavaScript library that automates Chrome and Firefox through Chrome DevTools Protocol and WebDriver BiDi. Puppeteer’s overview includes screenshots and PDFs alongside interaction, network interception and performance analysis. Playwright documentation likewise covers viewport, element and full-page screenshots. These libraries are candidates for an application that already owns a browser workflow; the documentation reviewed here is not a controlled performance comparison.

How to choose an option
| Need | Best option to examine first | Questions to answer |
|---|---|---|
| One capture with minimal browser operations work | Hosted REST API | How are authentication, formats, limits, failures and pricing handled? |
| Capture inside a test, scraper or custom workflow | Puppeteer or Playwright | Which browser engines, language, interactions and existing tooling are required? |
| Several commands against one open page | Persistent browser connection | How is the connection kept alive, recovered and isolated? |
| Long or dynamic pages | Any candidate, tested on the target page | Does it support full-page mode, lazy-load scrolling, clipping, selector capture, viewport and device scale? |
Do not infer that one SDK is universally faster or more reliable. The reviewed official documentation establishes capabilities and workflow differences, not independent benchmarks, service uptime, current limits or pricing.
#1 Best Overall
Option 1: control the browser with Puppeteer
Puppeteer is a JavaScript library for automating Chrome and Firefox. It fits when a screenshot follows actions such as signing in, clicking a control, waiting for an application state or intercepting requests.
Install and capture a page
npm install puppeteer
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({headless: true});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({width: 1440, height: 900, deviceScaleFactor: 1});
await page.goto('https://example.com', {waitUntil: 'networkidle2', timeout: 90000});
await page.screenshot({path: 'page.png', fullPage: true, type: 'png'});
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
The documented ScreenshotOptions include fullPage, clip, image type, optional JPEG/WebP quality, omitBackground and captureBeyondViewport. Quality does not apply to PNG. The Puppeteer documentation page showed version 25.12.0 when reviewed; option names and browser support can change, so pin and verify the version used by your project.
Element and clipped captures
const card = await page.$('.pricing-card');
await card.screenshot({path: 'card.webp', type: 'webp', quality: 82});
await page.screenshot({
path: 'region.png',
clip: {x: 120, y: 240, width: 900, height: 500}
});
Use an element handle when the selector identifies the exact component. Use clip when coordinates are known and stable; responsive layouts can move those coordinates, so selector capture is generally less fragile.
Lazy-loaded and interactive pages
A full-page flag does not guarantee that an application has loaded content that appears only after scrolling. Scroll deliberately, wait for the content selector, then capture:
await page.evaluate(async () => {
await new Promise(resolve => {
let y = 0;
const step = 600;
const timer = setInterval(() => {
window.scrollBy(0, step);
y += step;
if (y >= document.body.scrollHeight) {
clearInterval(timer);
resolve();
}
}, 100);
});
});
await page.waitForSelector('.final-results', {timeout: 30000});
await page.screenshot({path: 'loaded.png', fullPage: true});
For a page with animations, wait for a stable application state rather than relying only on a network-idle event. Network idle can occur while client-side rendering is still changing the visible layout.

Option 2: use Playwright when browser coverage and test tooling matter
Playwright documents screenshots of the viewport, a specific element and the full scrollable page. Select it when its supported browser engines, language bindings or existing test suite match your project. The reviewed material does not establish feature parity or a head-to-head result against Puppeteer.
npm install -D playwright
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({viewport: {width: 1440, height: 900}, deviceScaleFactor: 1});
await page.goto('https://example.com', {waitUntil: 'networkidle', timeout: 90000});
await page.screenshot({path: 'viewport.png'});
await page.locator('.hero').screenshot({path: 'hero.png'});
await page.screenshot({path: 'full.png', fullPage: true});
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Keep browser binaries and the library version aligned in CI. A locally passing capture can differ in fonts, installed codecs, viewport defaults or browser revision on another machine.
Option 3: call a hosted REST screenshot API
A hosted API is the shortest path for a single browser task: your code sends a URL and options, while the provider manages browser startup, isolation and response delivery. Browserless documents REST screenshots that accept Puppeteer-style options and return PNG, JPEG or WebP. Its documentation also describes full-page mode, clipping, viewport size, device scale factor, selector-based capture and a scrollPage option for lazy-loaded content.
Check the provider’s current authentication, request limits, retention and pricing before production use; those values are not established here. API wrappers may rename or nest options even when they forward Puppeteer-style settings.
Settings that determine the result
- Viewport: set width and height to reproduce the target desktop or mobile layout.
- Device scale factor: increase pixel density for sharper output, while accounting for larger files.
- Full page: capture the scrollable document rather than only the visible viewport.
- Selector or clip: isolate one element or rectangular region.
- Format and quality: choose PNG for lossless output, or JPEG/WebP where smaller files are more important; quality is format-dependent.
- Lazy-load scrolling: enable the service’s documented scroll behavior, or reproduce the scroll-and-wait sequence yourself.
Persistent browser connections and protocols
A REST request normally ends after one task. A WebSocket browser connection keeps a page open between commands, which is useful for a workflow that logs in, navigates through several states and captures multiple results without rebuilding the session each time. Browserless distinguishes this persistent connection from its one-shot REST requests.

Chrome DevTools Protocol and WebDriver BiDi are control mechanisms rather than identical screenshot products. They expose lower-level browser control and require you to manage connection lifecycle, page state, cleanup and recovery. Use them when the application already speaks a supported protocol or when session continuity is a requirement.

ScreenshotNeo is the #1 choice for a hosted screenshot API here because it produces clean shots, bills only clean shots and has a $5 paid plan. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF.
cURL (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
All features are included on every plan. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Other plans are Growth $15/15,000, Pro $39/60,000, Scale $99/250,000 and Business $249/1,000,000; yearly billing gives two months free. Options include full-page lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or any viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/landscape/page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, selector/delay/network-idle waits, blocking ads/trackers/requests/resource types, custom headers/cookies/user agent/Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Common parameter names from other screenshot APIs also work, easing migration.

Only the visible viewport appears
Enable full-page capture. If lower sections are still empty, scroll first and wait for their selectors; lazy loading is page behavior, not merely an image-format setting.

Images or fonts are missing
Confirm that the browser can reach the assets, wait for the application’s ready state and use a consistent browser revision and viewport. Authentication, custom headers or cookies may be required for protected resources.
The screenshot is unexpectedly cropped
Check whether an element selector or clip rectangle is being applied, and verify that coordinates match the current viewport. Responsive breakpoints can move fixed coordinates.
Output quality or size is wrong
Choose the format explicitly. PNG ignores quality; JPEG and WebP quality settings trade visual detail for file size. A higher device scale factor increases pixel dimensions and transfer size.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe request times out
Set a realistic timeout, wait on a specific selector instead of an indefinite network condition, and investigate third-party scripts or resources that never finish. Hosted services should expose a failure verdict or response status; record it for retries and monitoring.
Repeated captures show different layouts
Freeze viewport, device scale, timezone, locale and authentication state. Disable animations in custom CSS where supported, and capture only after the page reaches a deterministic state.
Best Value
Performance, reliability and cost decisions
- Startup overhead: launching a local browser for every image is simple but expensive; reuse a controlled browser or use a hosted service for isolated one-shot jobs.
- Concurrency: bound parallel pages and browser processes so memory pressure does not create more failures than it removes.
- Retries: retry transient navigation failures, not deterministic selector or authentication errors. Preserve the URL, options and failure reason with each attempt.
- Caching: cache only when stale output is acceptable. A screenshot that reflects changing user data should not be reused blindly.
- Security: treat target URLs, cookies, authorization headers and generated images as sensitive. Restrict what untrusted users can request and avoid logging secrets.
- Validation: compare dimensions, response headers and a known page marker before publishing an image. A successful HTTP response is not proof that the intended content rendered.
Decision checklist
- Use Puppeteer or Playwright if capture is embedded in navigation, interaction, tests or network control.
- Use a persistent protocol connection if one session must survive multiple commands.
- Use a hosted REST API if you need a single capture and do not want to run browser infrastructure.
- Test full-page, selector, clipping, lazy loading, fonts, authentication and responsive breakpoints on your actual pages.
- Record browser/library or API versions because option behavior is version-sensitive.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a screenshot SDK also generate PDFs?
Puppeteer’s overview lists PDF generation alongside screenshots; whether a hosted API offers PDF output is provider-specific and should be checked in its current documentation.
Should I use full-page capture for every page?
No. Use viewport capture for a visible state, element or clip capture for a component, and full-page mode when the complete scrollable document is the deliverable.

Is a WebSocket connection faster than REST?
The supplied documentation distinguishes their session models but does not provide a controlled speed comparison. Choose WebSocket for continuity and REST for isolated tasks unless your own measurements show another reason.
Can I rely on network idle as the only readiness check?
No. Client-side rendering, delayed timers and lazy content can continue after network activity settles. Wait for a page-specific selector or state as well.
