To extract data from a website online, choose a tool based on the output you need: a URL list, plain text, Markdown, JSON, or rows and columns. Paste or enter the page URL, preview the result, and export it only after checking a sample against the original page. A free URL scraper might be a one-off converter, a browser extension, or a hosted scraper with a free tier; those are different kinds of tools, not interchangeable promises of unlimited scraping.

Choose the right kind of URL scraper

Start with the job, not the tool name. “URL scraper” can mean extracting links from a page, converting one page into text or structured data, or collecting fields from visible page elements. The products described below advertise different combinations of those tasks. Their feature descriptions are vendor or store-listing claims, not independent accuracy tests.

Extracting links or converting one page

For a one-off task, use a tool whose advertised output matches what you want. Firecrawl lists URL extraction, website-to-Markdown and website-to-text conversion, and a URL-to-JSON tool. ScrapTheWeb lists sitemap URL extraction, extracting URLs from text, and converting pasted HTML tables. These are distinct jobs: extracting links does not automatically produce the page’s text or turn arbitrary page content into reliable rows.

Collecting visible fields from lists and tables

A point-and-click browser extension can suit a page where the information is already visible in repeated cards, a list, or a table. The Chrome Web Store listing for No Code Web Scraper describes selecting fields, previewing results, handling pagination and infinite scroll, and exporting CSV, XLSX, or JSON. Before installing it, read its current store listing and privacy disclosures. The reviewed listing reports handling web history, user activity, and website content; that is a reason to consider what access the extension receives before using it.

Dynamic pages and recurring jobs

If content appears only after JavaScript runs, a user interaction, or scrolling, check for explicit support for those behaviors. Browse AI describes handling dynamic content and structured exports. Crawley Cloud describes JavaScript rendering, scheduling, and exports. These descriptions do not establish that either service will work on every site or page, so test the exact page and workflow before relying on it.

Decide what data you need before entering a URL

Write down the fields and output format first. This prevents a common mismatch: using a link extractor when you need product names and prices, or expecting a table converter to crawl an entire site.

  • URLs: You want links from a page, text, or sitemap. Confirm whether the tool accepts the input you have and whether it returns only links or additional page data.
  • Text or Markdown: You want readable page content for review, search, or reuse. Check whether the converter targets one URL or a broader set of pages.
  • JSON: You want structured fields that another application can consume. Preview the field names and values; a JSON file is not necessarily accurate or consistently structured just because it parses.
  • CSV or spreadsheet rows: You want repeated visible records such as table rows or cards. Check whether pagination or infinite scrolling is involved and whether the tool supports those behaviors.
  • Repeated collection: You need updates on a schedule or collection across many pages. Look for scheduling, crawl scope, and export or integration support rather than assuming a one-page converter does the job.

Use a free scraper carefully: a practical workflow

  1. Identify the target and fields. Open the page yourself and note the exact information you need, where it appears, and whether it is visible immediately or requires scrolling, clicking, or waiting.
  2. Choose a matching tool category. For a single-page URL list or conversion, start with a URL extractor or converter that advertises your intended format. For repeated visible fields, consider a point-and-click extension. For JavaScript-driven or recurring work, verify the candidate explicitly describes the needed rendering or scheduling capability.
  3. Enter one representative URL. Use a page that contains the fields and behavior you need. Avoid starting with a large site-wide job: a small trial makes it easier to spot a mismatch before investing time or exporting a large result.
  4. Preview the output. Compare several records and fields with the source page. Look for missing rows, duplicated values, truncated text, incorrect columns, and values that appear only after interaction. Treat the preview as something to validate, not proof of correctness.
  5. Export in the format you will actually use. Choose CSV, XLSX, JSON, Markdown, text, or a URL list according to your next step. Confirm that the export preserves the fields and characters you need.
  6. Review limits and privacy before scaling. Check the provider’s current free quota, export conditions, and plan limits. For browser extensions, inspect current permissions and privacy disclosures. For hosted services, review how submitted page data and URLs are handled before sending sensitive material.

What “free” does and does not tell you

A free offering may be a one-off converter, a free browser extension, or a hosted plan with a limited allowance. The word alone does not establish unlimited use, unrestricted exports, or suitability for recurring work. Quotas, pricing, and feature availability can change; verify current terms with the provider before designing a workflow around them.

There is also no neutral benchmark in the available product descriptions establishing which named tool extracts most accurately or works on the widest range of sites. Feature lists are useful for narrowing choices, but the only practical way to assess a particular page is to run a small sample and compare it with the source.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a structured-data scraper: use it when a visual capture of a page is useful, rather than when you need extracted fields or a CSV. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture options include waiting for a selector, delay, or network idle, and capturing a full page or an element, but a screenshot still needs a separate extraction step if you want structured data.

For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of the target URL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides screenshot, page-info, and PDF tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Troubleshooting: when the output is wrong or incomplete

The scraper returns links but not the information on the page

The selected tool may be designed for URL extraction rather than content extraction. Switch to a text, Markdown, JSON, or table-oriented workflow that matches the fields you want, and inspect a preview before exporting again.

Rows or fields are missing

Check whether the page has pagination, infinite scroll, or content that appears only after an interaction. If so, confirm the tool explicitly supports the relevant behavior. The No Code Web Scraper listing describes pagination and infinite-scroll options; Browse AI and Crawley Cloud describe dynamic-content capabilities. These are advertised features, not guarantees for every site.

The export has duplicates or malformed columns

Compare the preview with the original page and check whether repeated page elements or inconsistent layouts are being treated as records. Try a smaller sample or a more consistent page, adjust selected fields where the tool permits it, and validate the exported file before using it downstream.

A free plan or export does not meet the job’s needs

Check current provider terms for quotas, export formats, and any plan restrictions. A free label does not specify how many runs are included or which features remain available, and the reviewed descriptions do not establish a shared quota or export policy.

You are unsure whether it is appropriate to collect the data

Review the target site’s terms and applicable law, along with the tool’s privacy and data-handling information. The product descriptions do not determine whether a particular collection is permitted, and this article is not a legal assessment.

How to choose without overcommitting

For a single conversion, favor the simplest tool that produces the needed output. For visible repeated records, a point-and-click extension may reduce setup. For dynamic or recurring collection, verify the exact rendering, interaction, schedule, and export features needed. In every case, trial a representative page, inspect the output, and check current limits and privacy terms before scaling. Vendor claims help identify candidates; they do not replace verification on your target site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a free URL scraper extract data from any website?

No universal compatibility is established by the feature descriptions. Page structure, JavaScript, interaction, and access requirements vary, so test the specific page and validate the result.

Is ScreenshotNeo a URL scraper?

No. ScreenshotNeo captures pages as images or PDFs; it does not itself return structured fields, tables, or a URL list.

Should I install a scraper browser extension?

Only after checking its current permissions and privacy disclosures and deciding whether the access is acceptable for the pages you use.
