Make the screenshot useful to its recipient
- Include enough surrounding context to show which application, page, or state the capture represents.
- Crop unrelated private information before sharing, but keep details that help explain the problem.
- Use annotation sparingly: a circle, arrow, or short label can direct attention without obscuring the content.
- Save the image in the format offered by your workflow and reopen it once to confirm that the markup and crop are correct.
How do I annotate a screenshot?
Open the captured snip in Snipping Tool and use its pen or highlighter to call attention to the relevant area. Crop away irrelevant content, then save a new copy if you need to preserve the original. Annotation is useful for bug reports, instructions, and visual feedback; it is not a substitute for redacting confidential information. - The screenshot overlay does not appear: Confirm you are using Windows 10 or 11 and press Windows key + Shift + S. If the shortcut still does not open the capture interface, open Snipping Tool directly from Windows and start a capture there.
- The capture omits content below the visible screen: A desktop snip captures the screen area, not automatically an entire long webpage. Use a website capture workflow that supports full-page capture if that is what you need.
