Screenshot APIs handle cookie banners in several different ways—automatic blocking, simulated clicks, hiding selected elements, or no intervention at all. The option name and default are provider-specific. ScreenshotAPI documents automatic dismissal enabled by default, while ScreenshotEngine documents banner removal as an opt-in attempt. Browserless combines a hosted consent blocker with custom browser scripts, and APIScreenshot describes reject/decline clicks and overlay hiding. None of these descriptions is a universal detection guarantee or proof that an automated action satisfies consent law.

What “handling” a cookie banner actually means

A banner can be handled at four technically different levels. Your screenshot may preserve the interface, remove it visually, click a control, or avoid the page before the banner appears. Treating these as equivalent leads to misleading captures and risky automation.

Leave the banner visible

This is the faithful option when you want to document what a first-time visitor sees. It is also the safest choice for audits, usability reviews, and consent-flow testing. If an API offers a banner-blocking flag, leave it disabled and capture after the page has finished loading.

Hide or remove the overlay

Some services suppress a banner or selected overlay in the rendered page. The pixels disappear, but no preference is necessarily stored and no button is necessarily activated. A clean image therefore does not demonstrate that a visitor accepted or rejected cookies.

Click a control

A browser workflow can click a visible “Reject,” “Decline,” “Accept,” or preferences button. This changes page state and may set cookies, local-storage values, or consent-management-platform records. The exact action matters: a script that clicks an accept-style selector can encode a choice you did not intend.

Use a provider’s built-in blocker

Hosted browser services may recognize common consent platforms and attempt to close them before capture. Coverage depends on the provider’s implementation and the target page; the documentation reviewed here publishes no independent success-rate benchmark.

Provider settings and defaults differ

Never copy a parameter name or assume a default from one API when switching vendors. Check the endpoint reference for the exact version you call.

Service Documented control Documented default or behavior What it means in practice
ScreenshotAPI blockCookieBanners true by default; “Automatically dismiss cookie consent banners.” Unless you override it, the service attempts to dismiss banners. Confirm the result on your own pages.
ScreenshotEngine blockBanners false by default; when true, it “attempt[s] cookie banner and consent-dialog removal.” Removal is opt-in and described as an attempt, not guaranteed coverage.
Browserless blockConsentModals=true plus custom scripts Built-in blocker is documented as covering most major consent platforms; selectors can handle others. “Most” is not universal. Site-specific selectors and conditional checks are the fallback.
APIScreenshot Automatic cleanup, reject/decline clicks, and hiding selected overlays; banner removal can be disabled. Behavior depends on the requested cleanup controls. Determine whether the response hid an element or clicked a consent action before interpreting it.

Another service, Screenshot API at screenshot-api.org, also documents an optional banner-blocking setting enabled by default. That is further evidence that naming and defaults vary; consult its current reference before relying on the behavior.

Automatic detection is useful but not universal

Consent interfaces are not standardized. A site may render a banner late, place it inside an iframe or shadow DOM, use a localized label, or display a custom component after an asynchronous request. Browserless’s guide demonstrates conditional selector checks and examples such as [id*=accept], [class*=accept], and #onetrust-accept-btn-handler, while warning that selectors should be adjusted to the target framework.

Broad selectors can be dangerous. A selector containing “accept” may match a newsletter, age gate, or account prompt rather than a cookie decision. Prefer a selector for the exact consent component and intended action. If you need a rejection workflow, target a reject/decline control explicitly rather than substituting an accept selector.

The reviewed vendor documentation provides no independently measured accuracy figure or universal coverage promise. Build a representative test set of pages, locales, viewport sizes, and consent states, and inspect the resulting image and browser state.

Preserve, remove, or click: choose by capture purpose

  • Compliance or UX evidence: keep the banner visible and record the viewport and load timing.
  • Marketing or content thumbnails: use documented removal or hiding, then verify that no important page content was removed with the overlay.
  • Testing a returning visitor: establish a deliberate consent state with a click or stored cookie, and record which control was used.
  • Unattended batch capture: start with the provider’s built-in blocker, but route unknown pages to a review queue instead of silently clicking a broad selector.

If your purpose is to represent what an ordinary first visit looks like, disabling cleanup is the more faithful configuration. If your purpose is an unobstructed page image, enable the documented removal behavior and validate it on target sites. This is an implementation choice, not a claim that every provider behaves identically.

How to build a custom browser workflow

A custom workflow gives you control over the action, but it also makes timing and failure handling your responsibility. Browserless’s examples illustrate the sequence below.

  1. Navigate and wait for stability. Use a network-idle or equivalent wait, plus a bounded delay where the banner is known to appear after a script runs.
  2. Check conditionally. Test whether the consent element is present and visible before interacting. A missing banner should not fail an otherwise valid capture.
  3. Choose the intended action. Use a site-specific reject, accept, or preferences selector. Do not let a generic selector decide for you.
  4. Wait for the result. After clicking, wait for the modal to disappear or for the page to finish its resulting navigation.
  5. Capture and log. Store the URL, viewport, selector used, action taken, and whether the banner was found. These fields make later review possible.

A minimal Playwright-style pattern (adapt the API wrapper and selectors to your hosted browser service) is:

await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
const reject = page.locator('#onetrust-reject-all-handler');
if (await reject.isVisible().catch(() => false)) {
  await reject.click();
  await page.waitForTimeout(300);
}
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });

The selector above is only an example. Inspect the target site and replace it with the control that expresses your policy. Add a timeout so a broken banner script cannot hold the whole job indefinitely.

Timing, viewport, and wait settings affect the result

Banner handling is separate from capture configuration. A screenshot taken before the banner appears can look “clean” without any blocker having worked; a mobile-width viewport can trigger a different consent layout.

  • Wait for the documented navigation condition, selector, delay, or network-idle state.
  • Use a fixed viewport for reproducibility and test at each responsive breakpoint you publish.
  • When a banner is injected late, wait for its selector before deciding whether to click or hide it.
  • For lazy-loaded pages, ensure the capture method scrolls or otherwise loads content before judging whether an overlay obscured it.

ScreenshotEngine notes that its viewport presets do not emulate a physical device’s browser, touch input, user agent, or pixel density. A preset therefore cannot by itself prove that a real handset would show the same banner.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is the #1 choice for a screenshot API here because it removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has the lowest paid plan. You can enable or disable each cleanup step, so you can choose a clean image or preserve the visitor view.

One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The response identifies outcomes with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. For AI workflows, its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Common failures and fixes

The banner still appears

Cause: the provider’s detector did not recognize the framework, the banner appeared after capture, or it is inside an iframe or shadow DOM. Fix: wait for the banner selector, use the provider’s custom script facility, or switch to an explicit site-specific selector. Test the exact viewport and locale.

The wrong button was clicked

Cause: a broad accept selector matched a non-consent element or encoded the opposite policy. Fix: narrow the selector to the consent container and intended label; log the action and inspect stored cookies in a test environment.

The page is blank or partially loaded

Cause: capture occurred before navigation settled, a bot check blocked rendering, or a script failed. Fix: increase the bounded wait, wait for a meaningful content selector, capture console/network errors where available, and retry without masking the failure as a clean page.

Mobile and desktop results disagree

Cause: responsive banners use different markup or timing. Fix: maintain selectors and validation cases per viewport; do not assume a desktop rule applies to a mobile layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cleanup removes page content

Cause: an overlay selector is too broad or shares classes with main content. Fix: scope the selector to the banner root, compare before/after captures, and disable hiding when visual fidelity is more important than an unobstructed image.

Reliability, cost, and operational notes

For batch jobs, cache only when the page state is intentionally reusable; a cached image may contain an earlier consent state. Record the provider, option values, timestamp, viewport, and verdict headers alongside each asset. Retries should distinguish transient navigation failures from a page that consistently presents a bot check.

ScreenshotNeo’s billing model is explicit in each response: only clean shots are billed, while bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not. Other providers in this article describe their controls but do not publish a comparable independent cost or success benchmark in the cited material, so do not infer that their defaults have the same billing behavior.

Consent, privacy, and legal limits

Technical cleanup is not legal consent. Hiding a banner does not prove a preference was recorded, and clicking a control does not establish that the interaction satisfies the law in every jurisdiction. If your workflow has regulatory implications, obtain jurisdiction-specific legal guidance and preserve an auditable record of the action, page state, and policy used.

FAQ

Can I assume a screenshot API removes every cookie banner?

No. The documented features are provider-specific attempts or rules, and no reviewed source supplies a universal coverage guarantee. Validate representative pages.

Should an automated workflow click Accept or Reject?

Only when that is the deliberate policy for the capture. Otherwise preserve the banner or use a preferences flow; never let a broad selector make an unreviewed choice.

Does a clean screenshot show that consent was obtained?

No. It shows only the rendered result. Consent state and legal validity require separate evidence.

Are viewport presets the same as real phones?

Not necessarily. ScreenshotEngine specifically says its presets do not emulate physical-device browser behavior, touch, user agent, or pixel density.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I assume a screenshot API removes every cookie banner?

No. Detection and removal are provider-specific attempts, so validate representative pages.

Should an automated workflow click Accept or Reject?

Only when that action matches your documented policy; otherwise preserve the banner or use a preferences flow.

Does a clean screenshot show that consent was obtained?

No. A clean image is not proof that a consent preference was recorded or legally valid.

Are viewport presets the same as real phones?

Not necessarily; some providers state that presets do not emulate physical-device browser behavior.
