Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

The image service transforms the source on demand, returns the result through its delivery layer or CDN, and usually caches that exact transformation URL. For example, an imgix-style request can use ?w=400&h=300; a production request should also state whether the image must fit inside those bounds, fill and crop them, or be padded.
This approach avoids generating and storing every possible thumbnail ahead of time. It also lets responsive layouts, email templates, mobile apps, and social cards request dimensions appropriate to each context while preserving a single source asset.

What dynamic image resizing does
Dynamic resizing creates a derivative at request time from an original asset. Your application supplies dimensions and a geometry policy in a transformation URL or API request. The provider performs the resize server-side and delivers the resulting image, commonly through a CDN.
Delivering an original file to the browser and shrinking it with CSS does not provide the same result: the browser still downloads unnecessary bytes, and the decoded image can consume more memory than the displayed version. Cloudinary’s documentation expresses the operational rule plainly: “Therefore, images should always be delivered from the server at their final size.”
#1 Best Overall
The three decisions every request must make
- Dimensions: set a width, a height, or both. Integer dimensions are the most portable choice.
- Aspect-ratio policy: decide whether the complete image must remain visible (
fit), whether a slot must be filled (fillorcrop), or whether empty space is acceptable (pad). - Quality and format: select an output format and compression policy supported by your provider. Keep the original lossless or high-quality source separately.
Width, height, crop and fit parameters
Parameter names vary, but the geometry has consistent meanings. Read the provider’s current reference before putting user-controlled values directly into URLs.
| Goal | Typical parameters or mode | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Constrain one side | w=800 or h=600 |
The other dimension is calculated from the source ratio. |
| Fit inside a box | w=800&h=600&fit=fit |
The entire image remains visible; one dimension can be smaller than the requested box. |
| Fill a fixed slot | w=800&h=600&fit=fill or crop mode |
The output is exactly the requested size; edges are cropped when ratios differ. |
| Preserve all pixels with a fixed canvas | pad plus width and height |
The image is fitted and the remaining area is letterboxed. |
| Prevent enlargement | limit or an upscaling restriction |
A small source is not enlarged beyond its native dimensions. |
| Subject-aware crop | gravity, focal point, or automatic gravity |
The crop favors a selected location or detected subject. |
If a Cloudinary delivery URL supplies width or height without a crop mode, Cloudinary documents that the image is scaled to the new dimensions by default. Add an explicit crop policy and gravity when a face, product, logo, or other subject must stay in frame.
Aspect ratio math
For proportional resizing, calculate the scale as the smaller of the requested width divided by source width and requested height divided by source height. Multiply both source dimensions by that scale and round to whole pixels. A 2400 × 1600 image fitted into 800 × 800 becomes 800 × 533, not 800 × 800. A fill operation instead scales until both bounds are covered and then crops the excess.
Provider URL patterns
Cloudinary transformation URLs
Cloudinary URLs contain the cloud name, asset type, delivery type, transformation components, version, public ID, and extension. Its SDKs can generate correctly formed URLs. The documented transformation modes include scale, fit, limit, pad, fill, crop, and thumb, with automatic or gravity-guided cropping. Use the SDK when signatures, escaping, or many chained transformations make hand-built URLs error-prone.
imgix query parameters
imgix presents a parameter-driven rendering API. Its documented example requests 400 × 300 pixels with ?w=400&h=300. URI-encode every parameter before generating a URL; this matters for remote source URLs, text overlays, and any value containing spaces, slashes, or punctuation.
Rank #2
ImageKit transformation paths
ImageKit uses transformation components in the path. Its example appends tr:w-300,h-300 to request a 300 × 300 derivative. ImageKit describes more than 50 real-time URL-based transformations for images and videos; treat that count as the vendor’s feature description, not a performance comparison.
AWS CloudFront Dynamic Image Transformation
AWS documents a Dynamic Image Transformation solution for CloudFront. Per-request filters can be supplied in the query string, including grouped parameters such as resize.width. This is suitable when you want an AWS-native, serverless delivery architecture and are prepared to operate the surrounding storage, functions, permissions, monitoring, and cache behavior.
Building a safe transformation URL
- Store the original: keep originals in durable storage and treat derivatives as disposable cache objects.
- Allow-list options: accept only integer widths and heights within your product’s bounds, such as the sizes your layout actually uses.
- Choose a policy per component: use
fitfor article images, fillor crop for avatars and cards, and padding for documents or logos that cannot be clipped. - Normalize requests: map equivalent inputs to one canonical ordering and spelling so caches do not store duplicates.
- Sign when necessary: signed URLs prevent visitors from turning your image endpoint into an unrestricted image-processing proxy.
- Cache the final URL: include a source version or immutable identifier. When an original changes, change that version rather than relying on a slow, global purge.
Generic request construction in JavaScript
The following function shows the important mechanics without tying your application to one vendor’s host or authentication scheme. Replace the base delivery URL with the one issued by your provider and keep the parameter allow-list on the server.

}
Do not let an arbitrary visitor supply a source URL unless the service is explicitly designed as a controlled proxy. Otherwise, attackers can use your credentials or bandwidth to fetch internal addresses or untrusted content.
cURL, Python and Node.js request examples
These examples call a provider’s image-delivery URL after your application has generated the canonical transformation. The response is binary image data, so save it as a file or stream it to the client.

Choosing a service
| Evaluation axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Geometry | Does it support fit, fill, crop, padding, upscaling limits, focal points, and face-aware cropping? |
| Syntax | Are query parameters easier for your stack, or do path components integrate better with existing URLs? |
| SDKs | Can the SDK generate encoded and signed URLs in your application language? |
| Source integration | Can it read managed uploads, object storage, remote URLs, or proxy sources you actually use? |
| Delivery | How are CDN caching, versioning, invalidation, and automatic format negotiation handled? |
| Security | Can you sign URLs, restrict transformations, limit source hosts, and observe failures? |
| Operations and price | What quotas, billing units, and infrastructure responsibilities apply today? Verify these directly with the provider. |
Performance, caching and cost controls
- Cache by complete transformation: width, height, fit, gravity, format, quality, and source version all affect the bytes returned.
- Use a small size vocabulary: map arbitrary viewport widths to approved breakpoints to improve cache hit rates.
- Resize before delivery: do not send a 4000-pixel source when a 400-pixel card is displayed.
- Separate originals and derivatives: originals need durable retention; derivatives can be regenerated or evicted.
- Watch cache misses: a sudden increase can indicate unstable query ordering, missing versions, or clients requesting unbounded dimensions.
- Measure bytes and latency: compare the delivered derivative, not the original file, and account for cold transformations separately from cache hits.
Common failures and fixes
The image is stretched
You supplied both dimensions without an aspect-ratio policy, or used a mode that ignores the source ratio. Use proportional sizing, fit, or an explicit crop mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe subject is cut off
A fill or crop operation selected the center by default. Add gravity or a focal point, or choose fit when cropping is unacceptable.
The output has unexpected borders
pad intentionally preserves the complete image inside a fixed canvas. Check the background color and switch to fit if a variable-sized result is acceptable.
Parameters appear ignored
Check URI encoding, parameter spelling, transformation order, and whether a CDN is serving an older cached URL. Add a source version or purge the specific derivative according to the provider’s cache rules.

Requests are expensive or slow
Unbounded dimensions and many unique transformations defeat caching. Enforce a size allow-list, cache canonical URLs, and avoid repeatedly transforming the same original at request time.

Or skip the browser setup
If your workflow also needs clean screenshots of pages rather than image derivatives, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; it is not an image-resizing service, but it can remove the browser automation layer from capture jobs.
With ScreenshotNeo, cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can call its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf—from Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client.
Example cURL request (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
FAQ
Should I resize in CSS or through an API?
Use server-side derivatives for bandwidth, decode-memory, and consistent output control; use CSS for layout decisions after the appropriately sized asset has been delivered.
When should I use fit instead of fill?
Choose fit when every pixel must remain visible. Choose fill or crop when the component has a fixed rectangle and edge loss is acceptable.
Do I need to generate every thumbnail in advance?
No. Dynamic derivatives let you create only the sizes requested, provided you control dimensions and cache the resulting URLs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can dynamic resizing preserve transparency?
Only if the selected output format and provider support an alpha channel; verify the format behavior in that provider’s current documentation.
How do I prevent users from exhausting image-processing resources?
Restrict dimensions and modes, canonicalize URLs, sign requests where appropriate, and monitor cache misses and transformation volume.
What happens when the original image changes?
Use a new source version in derivative URLs so caches cannot serve an older transformation.
