Use AI to find and operate the banner, but keep the actual cleanup deterministic. Load the page in a controlled browser, block ad and tracker requests before rendering, dismiss or hide consent elements after the page loads, capture the page or target element, and then compare the cleaned image with the original DOM. This sequence removes more noise than asking an AI model to erase pixels after capture and makes failures reproducible.
What “clean” means in a website screenshot
Several different problems are often called banner blocking:
- Network-level ad and tracker blocking: requests are stopped before ad scripts, images, frames or trackers render. ScreenshotCore describes this as blocking resources before the browser renders them.
- Consent-banner handling: a cookie or privacy panel is a normal page element inserted by JavaScript. It must be dismissed, hidden or removed after the page is available.
- Popup and chat cleanup: newsletter modals, floating chat launchers and other overlays need a selector, a click, custom CSS or JavaScript.
- Pixel editing: an image model can retouch an already captured screenshot, but it cannot restore content hidden behind an overlay and may alter text or layout.
AI is most useful as an agent that identifies the overlay, suggests a locator and chooses an action. The final browser actions should be explicit enough to log and replay.
The capture pipeline that works across sites
- Open the URL in an isolated browser context. Set the viewport, device scale, locale, timezone and any authenticated cookies before navigation.
- Install request rules before navigation. Abort known ad, tracker or unwanted resource patterns before the first document loads. Blocking early avoids downloading and executing resources that would otherwise affect layout.
- Wait for the page state you need. Use a specific selector, a short delay, or network-idle waiting. A fixed delay alone is brittle on pages with lazy content.
- Resolve consent and overlays. Prefer a known “Reject,” “Close” or “Continue without accepting” button. If no safe action exists, hide only the confirmed banner selector with CSS or JavaScript.
- Apply capture-time styling. Playwright can hide dynamic elements with its screenshot
styleoption. Keep this style narrow so article text, product details and navigation are not removed. - Capture and validate. Take a full-page, viewport, element or buffer screenshot. Check that the intended content remains and record the URL, viewport, locale, consent state, blocker rules and timestamp.
Keep an unmodified reference screenshot whenever the image is evidence for legal, accessibility, research or editorial work. A clean image is a presentation view, not proof that the live page looked that way for every visitor.
DIY method with Playwright
Install and run a Node.js example
The script below blocks common ad and tracker URL fragments, attempts a small set of consent actions, hides known overlay classes, waits for the main content and writes a WebP screenshot. Replace the URL and selectors with values observed on the site you control or are authorized to capture.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const target = 'https://example.com';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const context = await browser.newContext({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 1000 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1,
locale: 'en-US'
});
const page = await context.newPage();
const blockedParts = [
'doubleclick.net', 'googlesyndication.com', 'google-analytics.com',
'googletagmanager.com', 'facebook.net/tr', 'adservice.'
];
await page.route('**/*', async route => {
const requestUrl = route.request().url();
if (blockedParts.some(part => requestUrl.includes(part))) {
await route.abort();
} else {
await route.continue();
}
});
await page.goto(target, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded', timeout: 60000 });
// Prefer an explicit consent action when it exists.
const consentButtons = [
'button:has-text("Reject")',
'button:has-text("Reject all")',
'button:has-text("Close")',
'[aria-label="Close"]'
];
for (const selector of consentButtons) {
const button = page.locator(selector).first();
if (await button.count() && await button.isVisible().catch(() => false)) {
await button.click({ timeout: 1500 }).catch(() => {});
break;
}
}
await page.addStyleTag({ content: `
[id*="cookie" i], [class*="cookie" i],
[id*="consent" i], [class*="consent" i],
[id*="newsletter" i], [class*="newsletter" i],
[class*="chat-widget" i] { display: none !important; }
` });
await page.waitForLoadState('networkidle', { timeout: 15000 }).catch(() => {});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'clean.webp', fullPage: true, type: 'webp' });
await browser.close();
Broad attribute selectors are convenient for a demonstration but can hide wanted content on a real site. Replace them with a site-specific selector after inspecting the DOM. A safer pattern is to target the banner’s root node and its backdrop, not every element whose class happens to contain “cookie.”
Use AI to discover a locator, not to guess blindly
An AI browser agent can open the page, inspect visible text or an accessibility snapshot, and propose a sequence such as “click the button named Reject all, then wait for the dialog to disappear.” Have the agent return the selector and action as structured data, then run that data through an allow-list of permitted selectors. Log the chosen locator and whether it matched exactly one visible element.
#1 Best Overall
For a known domain, deterministic selectors are more repeatable than visual deletion. When markup changes, let the agent suggest a replacement and require a human or validation rule to confirm that the element is a consent dialog rather than a purchase button, navigation item or article content.

Playwright’s screenshot-time styling is useful when clicking a banner would change consent state or trigger navigation:
await page.screenshot({
path: 'viewport-clean.png',
style: `#cookie-banner, .newsletter-modal, .chat-launcher {
visibility: hidden !important;
}`,
fullPage: false,
type: 'png'
});
visibility:hidden preserves layout space. Use display:none only when the reserved space itself must disappear, because removing a large element can shift the page and change what is captured.
Capture one element instead of the whole page
const card = page.locator('[data-testid="pricing-card"]').first();
await card.waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 10000 });
await card.screenshot({ path: 'pricing-card.png', type: 'png' });
Element capture reduces the chance that an unrelated footer, chat control or sticky header enters the image. For lazy-loaded pages, scroll the target into view and wait for its images before capturing.
Python Playwright variant
If your automation stack is Python, the same order of operations applies. Install Playwright and its browser binaries, then adapt the selectors to the target site:

Blocking requests versus hiding elements
| Technique | When it runs | Strength | Risk or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Request interception | Before a resource renders | Prevents ad payloads and trackers from executing; can improve page stability | Rules may miss custom domains or block a resource the page needs |
| Button click | After the UI appears | Updates the site’s own consent state and usually removes the correct overlay | Text, language and multi-step flows vary; the click can navigate or reload |
| CSS or JavaScript removal | Immediately before capture | Works when no safe dismiss action exists | Broad selectors can remove wanted content or leave a blank gap |
| Screenshot masking or style | During capture | Does not mutate the page and is easy to scope | It hides pixels; it cannot reveal content obscured underneath |
Ad blocking is not the same as banner removal. Brave explains that blocking modifies network requests and page execution and can only approximate its goals because sites vary. Chrome’s classification can use filter-list matching and JavaScript stack analysis, yet a browser may unload an ad frame without removing its visual placeholder. AdBlock also cautions that a wildcard broad enough to catch every banner can block wanted content.
Hosted screenshot services and no-code options
Choose a hosted service when you do not want to maintain browser binaries, proxy capacity, consent rules and retry logic. ScreenshotCore documents pre-render blocking and separate controls for ads, trackers, cookie banners, chats, URL patterns and resource types. ScreenshotEngine documents ad and banner controls, custom CSS selectors and JavaScript for developers and AI agents. PagePixels offers no-ads capture through its web app, API, Zapier, Make, n8n and Power Automate.
| Option | Control | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | Hosted API and MCP server; clean shots, only clean shots billed, and a $5 paid plan for 3,000 shots | Developers and AI agents that need repeatable captures without browser infrastructure | You still need to choose selectors, timing and consent behavior for unusual sites |
| DIY Playwright | Maximum control over routes, context, selectors, scripts and output | Teams with site-specific tests or strict data residency and reproducibility needs | You maintain browsers, workers, retries, storage and changing locators |
| ScreenshotCore | Pre-render blocking plus dedicated ad, tracker, cookie and chat controls | Hosted captures where request filtering is central | Vendor rules still need checking against your page and consent flow |
| ScreenshotEngine | Ad and banner controls, custom CSS and JavaScript | API workflows operated by developers or AI agents | Automatic handling can vary with custom-built consent systems |
| PagePixels | No-ads capture in a web app, API and automation connectors | No-code workflows | Less browser-level control than a maintained Playwright script |
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is the first service to try when you want a website screenshot API: it removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed; and it provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The API supports full-page and element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and margin settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, request and resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

Use the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the complete option list. The following examples use the required endpoint and return a WebP file:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Every response identifies the page verdict and billing outcome with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get started.

Validation, reliability and cost controls
Validate what the cleaner changed
- Save the original DOM or an accessibility snapshot before cleanup.
- Check that the main heading, article body, product details and navigation still exist.
- Compare image dimensions and visible content across the unmodified and cleaned runs.
- Record URL, viewport, device scale, locale, timezone, consent action, selectors, blocker rules and timestamp.
Make runs reproducible
Pin browser versions in CI, use a fixed viewport and locale, and avoid arbitrary long sleeps. Wait for a meaningful selector or for the page to become network-idle, with a timeout and a fallback. Cache static captures only when the page can safely be reused; otherwise set a short TTL or disable caching. For large batches, use a queue with bounded concurrency so one slow or bot-protected site does not exhaust all workers.
Understand cost
DIY costs come from browser CPU, memory, bandwidth, proxy infrastructure, storage and engineering time. Hosted APIs trade that maintenance for per-shot billing and vendor-managed browsers. With ScreenshotNeo, failed loads, bot checks, blank pages, timeouts and cache hits are identified as non-clean responses and are not billed, while clean captures are billed according to the selected plan.

The banner is still visible
The element may be inside an iframe, appear after your wait period or use a shadow root. Inspect frames and accessibility text, wait for the banner selector, and target its actual close or reject control. If it is a custom consent system that requires scrolling or several steps, automate each state rather than deleting a guessed class.
The page has an empty rectangle where an ad was
Network blocking stopped the payload but not the reserved container. Hide the container only after confirming it is an ad slot, or capture the specific element you need. Do not remove every empty div; layout placeholders can contain legitimate lazy content.
Important page content disappeared
Your filter is too broad. Remove wildcard host rules and generic selectors, then add one domain-specific rule at a time. Compare against the reference screenshot and DOM to identify the first rule that removes wanted content.
The click times out
The text may differ by locale, the control may be covered by another overlay, or the consent UI may be in an iframe. Use an accessible role and name when available, inspect frames, and test visibility before clicking. A narrowly scoped CSS hide is safer than repeated force-clicks when no consent action is required for your use case.
Images or lazy sections are missing
Wait for the target selector, scroll through the page to trigger lazy loading, and allow image requests to finish. Full-page capture can expose content that a viewport-only screenshot never loads.
The site returns a bot check or blank page
Do not treat the result as a clean screenshot. Record the verdict, preserve the URL and timestamp, and retry with an authorized session, slower navigation and an appropriate user agent. A hosted service may classify the response separately; ScreenshotNeo exposes that result in its response headers and does not bill bot checks or blank pages.
AI keeps choosing the wrong element
Give the agent the page’s accessibility tree or a constrained DOM excerpt, require a unique match, and limit actions to a known set such as click, hide, wait and screenshot. Store the accepted locator for that domain and review changes when the site’s markup is updated.
When to choose each approach
- Choose Playwright for maximum control, repeatable tests and site-specific business rules.
- Choose an AI browser agent when the site is unfamiliar and you need help discovering a consent control, but keep deterministic checks around its actions.
- Choose a hosted API when scaling captures, PDFs, signed links, webhooks or bulk URLs matters more than owning browser infrastructure. ScreenshotNeo is the first option to evaluate for this use case because it combines pre-capture cleanup, non-billed failed results and an MCP server.
- Choose no-code automation when a web app or connector is more important than selector-level control.
- Choose a browser filter list for interactive browsing, understanding that custom banners and wanted content can be missed or blocked.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can AI remove a banner from an existing screenshot reliably?
Not reliably. Pixel editing can damage text and cannot recover content hidden behind the banner. Use AI before capture to identify and operate the page element, then validate the resulting screenshot.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I click “Accept all” to make a banner disappear?
Only when that consent choice is appropriate for your use case and policy. For a clean image, prefer a documented reject, close or equivalent action; otherwise hide the confirmed overlay without changing consent state.
What should I preserve for an evidence-quality capture?
Keep an unmodified reference, the cleaned image, the URL, viewport, locale, consent state, blocker rules and timestamp. This lets another person understand exactly what was removed.
Why can a blocked ad still affect page layout?
Request blocking prevents the resource from loading, but the page may keep an allocated ad slot. Remove that container only after verifying it is not legitimate content.
