Use Unsplash’s official JSON API to search photos, retrieve their image URLs and photographer metadata, and display results in your application. Register an Unsplash developer application, authenticate requests with its access key, and follow Unsplash’s rules: display the returned hotlinked image URL, credit Unsplash and the photographer, and record download-like actions through the photo’s download endpoint.
What “scraping Unsplash” should mean
For an application that needs Unsplash photos and associated data, use the official API rather than crawling Unsplash pages. The API exposes documented photo, search, random-photo, user, collection, and download-tracking resources. Search results are abbreviated; request an individual photo when you need fuller metadata. See the Unsplash API and its documentation.
This distinction matters: the API provides authorized data and image URLs with usage requirements. It is not permission to copy the catalog into a competing image host or to strip photographer attribution. In particular, Unsplash requires API applications to use the image URLs returned in each photo’s urls object.

Set up access and protect the key

Use the application’s access key to authenticate API requests. Keep secret credentials out of public client-side code. For a browser application, make the API request from your server or through a backend proxy so visitors cannot inspect and reuse a confidential key.

Begin with the documented demo allowance. If a public or larger internal application needs more capacity, apply for Production status after meeting the API guidelines and providing accurate application information and screenshots. Approval is not automatic; see the rate-limit documentation and production application process.
Search photos and read the response
The search endpoint accepts a query, page number, and per-page count. A search response contains photo objects; each object can provide an ID, dimensions, color, description or alt text when available, user information, image URLs, and links. The list response is concise, so use a photo’s individual endpoint if your application needs fuller details.

Here is a server-side JavaScript example using Node.js with the built-in fetch API. Set UNSPLASH_ACCESS_KEY in the server environment rather than putting a real key in source control or browser code.

}In a real application, validate incoming query text, handle non-success responses, and avoid logging credentials. Check for missing optional fields: descriptions and alt text may be absent, and a result set can be empty. Use photo.id to identify a result in your own application rather than treating its image URL as a permanent identifier.

Choose the right image size
The photo.urls object contains the API-provided image URLs for documented sizes. Use an appropriate returned size, commonly regular for an in-page image, rather than constructing a URL yourself. Use the returned value directly as the image source. Unsplash’s hotlinking guideline says API applications must use URLs under photo.urls; this allows image views to be recorded for photographers.
Render photographer and image details
Use the photo’s user data for photographer identity and profile link, and use description or alt text only when present. Treat API text as data: escape it for the output context and provide a sensible accessibility fallback if the API supplies no alt text. Do not infer missing image descriptions from the query.
Display images with required attribution
When displaying a photo from Unsplash, attribute both Unsplash and the photographer, and link the photographer’s name to their Unsplash profile. Unsplash recommends referral parameters in this form: &utm_medium=referral. Use your actual application name in those values.
A basic HTML rendering pattern is:

</figure>Replace the illustrative uppercase values with safely encoded values from the API response. In HTML source, ampersands in query strings are written as &; the browser resolves them as & in the actual URL. Keep attribution visible and do not hide or remove it.
Track download-like actions correctly
Simply displaying a photo uses its returned image URL. A different rule applies when a user takes an action comparable to downloading—for example, inserting the image into a blog, setting it as wallpaper, or selecting it as a presentation background. In that case, make an authorized request to the photo’s links.download_location endpoint to record the event. That endpoint is for tracking; it is not the image file URL to embed or give to the user.

Use the endpoint returned for that specific photo rather than guessing its path. Make the tracking request from your server with the required authorization, and handle request failures without confusing a tracking URL with the image source. The API documentation describes the photo resource and download tracking.
Store metadata without replacing Unsplash’s image delivery
It can be useful to store the photo ID and the metadata your application needs, such as dimensions, photographer, profile link, and chosen returned image URL. Keep that data current enough for your use case and continue to use the returned URL when displaying the original photo. Avoid copying the exact source image to create a substitute image host: the API guidelines require hotlinking. The guidance distinguishes a derivative creative image—one that is no longer the exact source image—which may be hosted separately.
If you cache API responses in your own application, keep the API’s usage rules and the current returned fields in view; a stored response does not change the requirement to use the returned hotlinked image URL for display. Do not make aggressive bursts of requests, and do not treat image-file requests as a substitute for the JSON API request that provides photo metadata.
Understand request limits before going public
Unsplash documents a default demo limit of 50 JSON API requests per hour and a limit of 1,000 requests per hour for approved Production applications. These are request limits, not a count of images displayed. JSON requests to api.unsplash.com count toward the limit; image-file requests to images.unsplash.com do not. Consult the current rate-limit documentation for the applicable policy and request headers.
For a production application, plan request volume around search and metadata needs. Avoid making a fresh search request for every small UI interaction if existing results can serve the view. Apply for Production access only after the application follows the API guidelines and you can provide accurate application information and screenshots. Unsplash decides whether to approve an application.

Common problems and fixes

401 or 403 response: Check that the access key is present, correctly copied, and sent using the documented authorization scheme. Confirm the application credentials and access status; never solve this by publishing a secret key in client code.

429 response or unexpectedly few results: You may have reached the applicable hourly API allowance. Reduce repeated JSON calls, inspect the response and rate-limit information, and apply for Production status if your use case qualifies.

Image does not display: Use a URL value actually returned in
photo.urls, such asregular, and check that the client receives the URL intact. Do not construct an image URL from a photo ID or usedownload_locationas the image source. -
Photographer or description field is blank: Some metadata is optional or absent in a particular response. Handle missing values gracefully, and do not fabricate a photographer name, profile, or description.

Download event is not recorded: Confirm that the user action is download-like, then call that photo’s returned
links.download_locationwith authorization. A normal image display alone is not a reason to substitute that endpoint for the photo URL.Best Value

Browser code exposes credentials: Move the API call to a backend or proxy. The browser should receive only the results needed for display, not a confidential application secret.
Privacy and responsible handling
Follow applicable privacy-law obligations when your application handles personal data or information about users. Keep the data you collect proportionate to the product, secure credentials, and review the API guidelines and terms for requirements that apply to your particular application. Do not assume that public availability of a photo eliminates attribution or API-use obligations.

Can I use Unsplash API results in a public app?
Yes, subject to Unsplash’s API guidelines and terms. Public applications should follow attribution, hotlinking, credential-protection, and rate-limit requirements, and may need Production access if their request volume exceeds the demo allowance.
Does the download tracking URL return the photo?
No. It records a download-like action. Display the image using a URL in photo.urls.

Unsplash’s guidance says a derivative creative image may be hosted separately because it is no longer the exact source image. The original photo displayed by an API application should use its returned hotlinked URL.
