Start with permission, not a scraper. Tesco’s UK general terms, last updated 21 January 2026, prohibit bots, crawlers, scrapers, AI tools and other automated processes from accessing, extracting or collecting Site data without Tesco’s prior written consent. The same section separately restricts copying, distribution and commercial use of site content. A defensible API integration therefore begins with a written access and reuse agreement, followed by the endpoint and credentials Tesco or an authorized data licensor specifies.

This guide shows how to structure that authorized integration, what the available evidence does and does not prove, how to preserve price and product freshness, and how to evaluate a third-party Tesco data API without assuming that vendor documentation grants Tesco’s permission.

What Tesco’s terms mean for an API project

Tesco’s section 7 contains a specific prohibition: “you must not use any automated system, software, or process (including bots, crawlers, scrapers, or AI tools) to access, extract, or collect data from this Site for any purpose without our prior written consent.” This is an access condition, not merely a request to slow down requests.

Permission to automate access is also not the same as permission to reuse everything you receive. Tesco’s terms describe copyright, trade-mark, database and other intellectual-property rights and restrict reproduction, modification, copying, distribution and commercial use without written permission. Your agreement should therefore cover both collection and downstream use.

Get these points in writing

  • The approved API or data-delivery method, base URL, API version and environment.
  • Who may use the credentials and which application, country, store context or business unit they cover.
  • Permitted fields, request rates, pagination, concurrency and maintenance windows.
  • Whether you may store, display, transform, compare, export or redistribute records.
  • Retention, deletion, audit and security requirements.
  • How Tesco communicates schema changes, product withdrawals and account suspension.

If Tesco gives you a partner or private API, follow that documentation instead of inspecting the public website for undocumented calls.

Does Tesco have a public product API?

No current, general Tesco grocery developer catalogue documentation was established in the available material. A public Python wrapper references historical Tesco Labs paths—https://dev.tescolabs.com/grocery/products/ and https://dev.tescolabs.com/product/—and an Ocp-Apim-Subscription-Key header. That proves a wrapper was written; it does not prove that those endpoints still operate, that credentials can be obtained, or that Tesco authorizes your intended collection and reuse.

Do not treat the old paths as a production recipe. Confirm the endpoint, authentication scheme, fields and legal scope directly with Tesco or your licensed data provider. A service that advertises “Tesco product API” access is making a claim about its own service; its documentation alone does not establish Tesco authorization for your account or your redistribution model.

Choose an access route

Route What it establishes What you still must verify
Direct Tesco authorization and API Best provenance and a clear place to negotiate rights. Current endpoint availability, credentials, fields, quotas, storage, display and redistribution terms. General public catalogue documentation was not located.
Licensed third-party Tesco data API A vendor documents Tesco-specific retrieval capabilities. Collection authorization, coverage, field definitions, update schedule, store/geography context, error handling, retention, redistribution rights, limits and price.
Undocumented website calls or a browser scraper Only a technical mechanism for reaching public pages. It does not satisfy Tesco’s written-consent requirement and can expose you to blocking, changing markup and intellectual-property restrictions.

Unwrangle and Upscrape publish Tesco product-data capabilities. Evaluate their contracts and provenance rather than assuming that a successful response is lawful to republish. No speed, price or accuracy ranking is established here.

Design an authorized ingestion pipeline

  1. Record the authorization. Store the agreement identifier, permitted domains or endpoints, fields, rate limit, geography, retention period and approved uses beside your project configuration.
  2. Implement the approved authentication. Use the exact token, subscription key, OAuth flow or signed request described by the licensor. Keep secrets in environment variables or a secret manager, never in source control.
  3. Request only allowed data. Ask for the smallest page size and field set that meets your use case. Respect the documented delay, quota and retry policy.
  4. Preserve identity and provenance. Store the product identifier supplied by the source, the request timestamp, endpoint version, store or region, and a hash or raw response where your agreement permits it.
  5. Validate every response. Check HTTP status, content type, schema version, required identifiers and numeric ranges. Send malformed records to a quarantine queue instead of silently overwriting good data.
  6. Apply freshness rules. Mark records with retrieved_at and, where available, the source’s update time. Never label a stored price “live” unless the contract and response semantics support that claim.
  7. Enforce reuse controls. Add retention and deletion jobs, field-level access controls and an audit trail for exports or public display.

A provider-neutral request skeleton

Replace the placeholders only with values supplied by your written agreement. This example intentionally does not assert that Tesco’s historical endpoints are current.

GET https://APPROVED_ENDPOINT.example/products?q=coffee&page=1&page_size=50
Authorization: Bearer YOUR_AUTH_TOKEN
Accept: application/json

Persist the response together with an immutable retrieval time:

{
  "source_product_id": "provided-by-source",
  "retrieved_at": "2026-09-29T05:08:21Z",
  "source_region": "GB",
  "payload": { "...": "approved response fields" }
}

Runnable client patterns

Use these only after substituting the endpoint and authentication details Tesco or your provider has approved.

Product fields and freshness caveats

Tesco supplier training gives examples including barcode, ingredients, nutrition information, serving size, country of origin, preparation instructions, alcohol by volume and recyclable information. It is supplier-context material, not a promise that a public developer API returns every field. Build your schema around the fields your agreement actually lists and make optional fields nullable.

Tesco’s grocery terms describe online prices as guide prices and explain that the amount charged can differ when an order is picked. A captured price is therefore a timestamped observation, not a guaranteed checkout price. Stock refreshes can also change product details; the terms use wine ABV and vintage as examples. Keep historical values when your rights allow, expose the observation time, and avoid silently presenting stale catalogue data as current.

Pagination, retries and change handling

Pagination

Follow the provider’s cursor or continuation token rather than assuming page numbers remain stable. Stop when the API returns its documented end marker. Deduplicate by the source product identifier because products can move between pages while a catalogue changes.

Retries

Retry timeouts and documented transient 5xx responses with capped exponential backoff and jitter. Do not automatically retry authentication failures, permission errors or schema-validation failures. Honor Retry-After when supplied.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Schema and product changes

Version your internal parser, log unknown fields, and alert when required fields disappear or change type. Treat an empty result as a valid business response only when the API distinguishes “no matches” from an unavailable catalogue. For withdrawals, retain the last permitted observation with a status and timestamp rather than deleting history by accident.

Troubleshooting

401 or 403 responses

Check that the credential belongs to the approved application, has not expired, and is sent in the exact header or query parameter required. A valid token cannot overcome a missing written-use scope.

404 or connection failures on Tesco Labs URLs

The historical wrapper is not current API documentation. Stop retrying, confirm the endpoint with Tesco or your provider, and do not switch to reverse-engineering the public site.

429 rate-limit responses

Reduce concurrency, honor the provider’s quota and Retry-After, and ask for an agreed limit increase if your contract permits one. Queue work instead of launching unbounded parallel requests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fields are missing or prices differ

Compare the response schema, store or region and retrieval times. Prices may be guide prices and can change during picking; missing fields may simply be outside your licensed field set.

  • Widely Use Range - This NetumScan Handheld USB barcode scanner can be used in supermarkets, convenience stores, warehouse, library, bookstore, drugstore, retail shop for file management, inventory tracking and POS(point of sale), etc.

Duplicate or contradictory products

Use the source identifier plus region/store context as the key, retain retrieval timestamps, and route conflicts for review. Do not merge records solely on product name or barcode when the agreement distinguishes variants.

Testing and operational controls

  • Use a sandbox or a small, approved sample before a full catalogue run.
  • Test expired credentials, throttling, empty results, malformed JSON, partial pages and endpoint outages.
  • Measure request count, latency, status codes, validation failures and records changed; these are operational metrics, not evidence of Tesco-wide availability.
  • Encrypt credentials and stored responses, restrict analyst access and document deletion jobs.
  • Review Tesco’s terms and your provider agreement before expanding geography, fields or public display.

Or skip the browser setup

If your authorized workflow needs a clean visual record of a Tesco page or an internal review screen, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF through one request. It is not a substitute for Tesco permission or a product-data license. Cookie and consent banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients use take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I scrape Tesco product pages if I keep the request rate low?

Low traffic does not remove Tesco’s stated requirement for prior written consent. Obtain written authorization before any automated access.

Is a Tesco product-data API response proof that I may republish the data?

No. Confirm display, storage, commercial and redistribution rights in Tesco’s or the provider’s written terms.

Should I use the Tesco Labs endpoints from the old wrapper?

Only if Tesco independently confirms that those endpoints, credentials and intended use are current and approved; the wrapper is historical third-party code.

The Bottom Line

Build a Tesco product pipeline only from an endpoint and reuse scope you can document. Treat prices and catalogue fields as time-stamped, changeable observations, validate every response, and regard third-party API marketing as a claim to verify rather than a permission grant.
