Use SoundCloud’s registered public API, not an HTML scraper. Register an application, obtain an OAuth 2.1 access token (PKCE for user-authorized data), call the documented track, playlist, or user search endpoints, follow collection continuation data, and store stable IDs with attribution metadata. SoundCloud’s terms prohibit scraping platform pages, copying user content, bypassing controls, and using API data for an unauthorized competing service or AI training.
The examples below collect searchable metadata and links. They do not download audio or defeat playback restrictions.
What “scraping SoundCloud” can legitimately mean
For a developer, the safe interpretation is programmatically collecting API-exposed metadata—such as track, playlist, and user records—for an application whose purpose is allowed by SoundCloud’s terms. The API documentation describes authentication, track upload and playback, social features, and search. Its documented base URL is https://api.soundcloud.com.

SoundCloud’s platform terms say: “You must not employ scraping or similar techniques to aggregate, repurpose, republish or otherwise make use of any Content.” The API Terms of Use also prohibit using the API to “rip, capture, or copy any User Content” or to circumvent usage restrictions imposed by an uploader. Treat those rules as a design constraint, not something to work around.

Choose the access model before writing code

Prerequisites and application registration
- Register an application. SoundCloud requires an app registration and client ID. Keep the client secret outside source control and server logs.
- Decide whether the request is app-only or user-scoped. Search and other public discovery can use the token flow documented by SoundCloud. A user’s private or account-related collections require the authorization-code flow with PKCE.
- Implement OAuth 2.1. PKCE protects the authorization-code exchange. Access tokens expire in approximately one hour; refresh tokens are single-use, so replace the stored refresh token every time one is redeemed.
- Reuse tokens. Do not request a new client-credentials token for every API call. Client-credentials exchanges are limited to 50 per 12 hours per application and 30 per hour per IP.
SoundCloud’s current OAuth instructions define the authorization and token URLs and the scopes available to your app. Use those exact values from the developer documentation rather than copying an endpoint from an old code sample.
Search tracks, playlists, and users
The API explorer exposes searches for tracks, playlists, and users. Track search accepts a q query and supports filters such as genres, bpm[from], duration[from], access=playable, limit, and linked_partitioning. Apply only filters that answer your actual editorial or product question.

Set an access token obtained through SoundCloud’s documented flow, then URL-encode the search terms. The Authorization scheme is OAuth, not Bearer.

Use the corresponding documented search resource when you need users or playlists instead of fetching a web page and parsing its markup. For a known user, the API’s user and collection resources expose tracks, playlists, followers, followings, likes, reposts, and related collections. Confirm the current endpoint and field names in the API explorer before hard-coding them; SoundCloud can evolve resource schemas.

Persist the identifiers and provenance needed to refresh a record:

- the stable SoundCloud identifier;
- the resource type (track, playlist, user, and so on);
- the retrieval timestamp;
- the current
permalink_urlfor attribution and later refresh; - the query or user-authorized collection that produced the record.
Do not treat a display name as a primary key. Usernames and titles can change, while an identifier is designed for resource identity.
Pagination, caching, and incremental synchronization
Collection responses expose continuation information. Follow the continuation URL or field shown by the current API schema until there is no next page; do not manufacture page numbers when the response supplies a continuation link. Keep a maximum-page or maximum-record budget for interactive requests so a broad query cannot run indefinitely.
One-off export
For a small export, record the query, token subject (when user-authorized), retrieval time, and every returned identifier. Write the raw response to a protected location only long enough to transform it into the fields your application needs.
Scheduled sync
Store the last successful retrieval time and refresh only the collections or records that can have changed. Use a queue with bounded concurrency, exponential backoff, and jitter. If a user revokes access, stop refreshes and delete data when the applicable terms require it.

Cache metadata only for a defensible purpose. Define retention and deletion rules before collecting data, restrict database access, and encrypt tokens and any sensitive user information. A cache is not permission to republish a creator’s content indefinitely.

Rate limits and reliability
Rate limits are calculated per client_id. Handle 429 Too Many Requests as a scheduling signal, not as a reason to retry in a tight loop.

On a 429 response, read the reset metadata returned by the API, pause until the indicated window, then retry with backoff. Also retry transient network failures and 5xx responses with a finite attempt count. Do not retry invalid credentials, forbidden requests, or malformed parameters without fixing the cause.
Publishing, licensing, and privacy boundaries
Do not copy or rehost audio
API access does not transfer ownership of User Content. The terms prohibit ripping, capturing, or copying content and prohibit circumventing uploader-imposed restrictions. Do not turn metadata endpoints or stream URLs into a download service.

Do not build an unauthorized substitute
SoundCloud’s API terms prohibit using API data to create a competing on-demand service and prohibit unauthorized AI training or development. Obtain every license and permission your product needs; an API response is not a license.
Give required credit
When displaying or streaming User Content, credit the uploader, credit SoundCloud, and provide a clearly visible backlink to the relevant SoundCloud permalink on your web page. Preserve the permalink_url with each record so attribution survives a redesign.
Handle personal data deliberately
Usernames, profile details, comments, likes, followers, and similar fields can identify people. Apply purpose limitation, least-privilege access, retention limits, deletion procedures, and an access or correction process appropriate to your jurisdiction and product.

Troubleshooting common failures
401 Unauthorized
Check that the token is current, that the header reads Authorization: OAuth ACCESS_TOKEN, and that your worker has replaced a single-use refresh token after renewal. A client secret or refresh token copied with surrounding quotes can also invalidate an exchange.
403 Forbidden
The operation may require user authorization, a missing scope, or an app that SoundCloud has restricted. Confirm the resource’s authorization requirement and review your app’s status; do not attempt to bypass the response.
400 Bad Request
Inspect URL encoding and parameter names. Bracketed filters such as bpm[from] must be encoded correctly by your HTTP library. Remove optional filters one at a time to isolate the invalid value.
Empty or unexpectedly small results
Check spelling, the selected resource (tracks versus users or playlists), and restrictive filters such as genre, duration, BPM, or access=playable. Log the exact encoded query and retrieval timestamp so a later comparison is meaningful.

429 Too Many Requests
Stop immediate retries, honor reset metadata, reduce concurrency, and verify that multiple workers are not repeatedly exchanging client-credentials tokens. Per-client-ID and per-IP limits can be reached by separate services sharing one egress address.
Token refresh loops
Refresh tokens are single-use. Serialize refresh operations, atomically store the newly returned refresh token, and let other workers read the new value instead of redeeming the old one again.
Access disappears after deployment
SoundCloud may revoke access by invalidating a client ID and client secret when it believes an app breaches the terms. Keep an audit trail of requested scopes, data uses, deletion requests, and attribution, then contact SoundCloud through the appropriate developer channel rather than creating replacement credentials to evade a revocation.
A practical implementation checklist
- Registered app, protected client credentials, and documented redirect configuration.
- OAuth 2.1 with PKCE for user-scoped resources and a safe token store.
- Searches limited to API resources and filters that match a stated purpose.
- Continuation handling, bounded concurrency, 429 reset handling, and finite retries.
- Stable IDs, resource types, retrieval timestamps, and permalink URLs persisted for refresh and credit.
- Retention, deletion, access-control, and revocation procedures documented before launch.
- No audio copying, restriction bypass, unauthorized AI training, or competing on-demand service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the same access token forever?
No. SoundCloud access tokens expire in approximately one hour. Refresh them through the documented flow and replace the single-use refresh token each time.
What should I do when a collection has more pages than expected?
Follow the continuation information returned by the current response schema and enforce a record or time budget for each job so a broad query cannot run without bounds.
Is a public profile automatically safe to republish?
No. Public visibility does not remove attribution, licensing, platform-term, or personal-data responsibilities. Collect only what your stated purpose requires and retain it for a defined period.
