There is no single best image-generation API for every workload. OpenAI GPT Image is the broadest starting point for developers who need generation and editing; Google Gemini image models and Imagen fit Google Cloud users but require immediate lifecycle checks; Stability AI offers one of the widest generation, editing, upscaling and control surfaces; FLUX Pro through Replicate is a straightforward managed endpoint with a published per-image price; and Adobe Firefly is the strongest fit for Adobe-centered creative production.
The right choice depends on four questions: do you need text-to-image, editing or both; how important is typography and layout; which billing unit can your budget tolerate; and whether your team already operates in OpenAI, Google, Replicate, Stability or Adobe. The comparison below uses documented capabilities and prices available in 2026. It does not claim a universal image-quality winner because no comparable independent benchmark covers all eight services.
Quick comparison
| API | Best fit | Generation and editing | Pricing unit or listed price | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI GPT Image | General-purpose generation, revisions and multimodal workflows | Text-to-image plus image input through Images and Responses APIs | GPT Image 2.5: $8 per million image-input tokens, $2 per million cached image-input tokens and $30 per million image-output tokens; text tokens are additional | Per-image cost varies with model, quality, prompt and size because usage is token-metered |
| Google Gemini image generation and Imagen | Google Cloud teams and Gemini-native applications | Gemini image models and Imagen endpoints | Use current Google pricing documentation; the supplied figures do not establish one flat per-image rate | Gemini 2.5 Flash Image is scheduled to shut down October 2, 2026; Imagen 4 endpoints are scheduled to shut down August 17, 2026 |
| Stability AI Stable Image | Generation, editing, upscaling and controlled image workflows | REST v2beta supports all four | Credits: SD 3.5 Large 6.5, Large Turbo 4, Medium 3.5 and Flash 2.5 credits per successful generation; $1 buys 100 credits; Google sign-in grants 25 free credits | Documented limit of 150 requests per 10 seconds |
| FLUX Pro through Replicate | Managed FLUX access without self-hosting | Primarily generation; verify the selected revision for editing features | $0.055 per output image on the cited FLUX Pro page | Model revisions and prices can change; verify before deployment |
| Adobe Firefly API | Adobe creative-production and enterprise workflows | Generative image integration and image upscaling | Current quotas and commercial terms should be confirmed with Adobe | Best value depends on how deeply your workflow already uses Adobe tools |
| Ideogram through Replicate | Teams wanting marketplace access to an Ideogram model | Availability depends on the listed official model | Check the current Replicate model page | Marketplace listing does not establish a direct Ideogram API partnership or affiliate program |
| Leonardo AI | A lead for teams evaluating another creative platform | Not established by the cited material | Not stated | Authoritative API documentation was not established here |
| Amazon Bedrock | Teams standardizing on AWS-managed model access | Not established by the cited material | Not stated | A current Bedrock image-generation endpoint was not established here |
How to choose an image API
Start with the operation, not the brand
- New artwork: all five primary options can be investigated, but their controls and output behavior differ.
- Editing an existing image: OpenAI’s image-input workflow and Stability’s editing and control endpoints are the clearest documented starting points.
- Upscaling: Stability documents upscaling, while Adobe Firefly positions upscaling as part of its API.
- Accurate lettering: test the exact fonts, line lengths and languages in your prompts. Marketing claims are not a substitute for a task-specific test set.
Match the billing meter to your traffic
Token, credit and per-output pricing behave differently. A token-metered request can become more expensive when you send large reference images or request higher quality. Credit systems make model-to-model comparisons easier inside one provider, but you still need to translate credits into your expected number of successful generations. A per-output figure is simple to forecast, yet storage, orchestration and retries may be separate costs.

Check lifecycle dates before writing integration code
Google’s published shutdown dates make model-ID validation part of implementation, not an operational afterthought. Keep the model identifier in configuration, monitor provider notices, and maintain a migration path to the recommended replacement. Apply the same discipline to every provider whose model catalog changes frequently.

1. OpenAI GPT Image
OpenAI is the most balanced first test when one API must cover concept generation, iterative edits and application-driven workflows. The official image-generation guide documents GPT Image models, image dimensions including 1024×1024 and 1024×1536, and generation through both the Images and Responses APIs.
Where it fits
- Product teams that want one vendor for text prompts and image references.
- Applications that need conversational or multimodal orchestration around an image request.
- Workflows where output size is selected explicitly rather than left to a fixed preset.
Cost and trade-offs
GPT Image 2.5 is token-metered: $8 per million image-input tokens, $2 per million cached image-input tokens and $30 per million image-output tokens, with additional text-token rates. There is therefore no honest universal “cost per image.” Measure representative prompts at the quality and dimensions you will actually ship, and include reference-image tokens and retries in the estimate.
Integration checklist
- Keep the model name and requested size in configuration.
- Record prompt, reference-image dimensions, quality setting and returned usage for every job.
- Store the original prompt and edit instructions so a failed or disputed result can be reproduced.
- Put a queue in front of bursty traffic and implement exponential backoff for transient failures.
2. Google Gemini image generation and Imagen
Google offers Gemini image models alongside Imagen endpoints, which is attractive when your application already runs on Google Cloud or uses Gemini for surrounding reasoning. The important qualification is lifecycle: Google documents that Gemini 2.5 Flash Image is scheduled to shut down on October 2, 2026, and Imagen 4 standard, ultra and fast endpoints are scheduled to shut down on August 17, 2026, with migration to newer Gemini image models.

Choose Google when cloud alignment, IAM, regional deployment and Gemini-based application logic outweigh the cost of changing model IDs during a migration. Treat the dates above as planning inputs, not as a reason to freeze development: confirm the replacement model, supported sizes and pricing immediately before launch.
Migration safeguards
- Never hard-code a retiring model ID in multiple services.
- Run prompt and image-regression tests against the replacement model before the shutdown date.
- Compare typography, subject identity, safety behavior and latency separately; a replacement can change all four.
- Document the region and API version used by production, because availability can vary.
3. Stability AI Stable Image
Stability’s REST v2beta API is the broadest documented option in this shortlist for a pipeline that combines generation, editing, upscaling and control workflows. Stable Image Core returns a one-megapixel image by default at 1024×1024.
Rank #2
- Deck of 50 cards, each with a unique drawing prompt designed to inspire creativity and artistic exploration
- Uncoated smooth index-card-like 80# cover paper allows easy drawing with pencils, pens, or markers directly on the blank area of the card
- 2.5 x 3.5 inch size, similar to standard playing cards, fits easily in a pocket or bag
- Each card has a unique hashtag for sharing on social media
- Encourages creative practice and helps build a personal collection of art
Pricing and throughput
Successful generations consume credits: SD 3.5 Large uses 6.5 credits, Large Turbo 4, Medium 3.5 and Flash 2.5. The getting-started material says Google sign-in grants 25 free credits and additional credits cost $1 per 100 credits. The API documents a 150-request-per-10-second rate limit, so a worker pool should smooth bursts rather than send an unbounded parallel fan-out.
Why teams choose it
- Separate endpoints and controls for edit, upscale and guided generation.
- A credit meter that lets you compare several Stable Image models inside one account.
- Useful control surfaces when composition matters more than a one-shot prompt.
Before committing, verify the exact endpoint, input image requirements, output formats and current model availability in the API reference. Credit prices and model names are operational details that can change.

4. FLUX Pro through Replicate
Replicate’s official FLUX Pro page describes a maintained official model, predictable pricing and commercial-use labeling. It lists $0.055 per output image, which makes an initial budget spreadsheet easier than a token-metered alternative.
Strengths
- No need to provision or operate your own GPU service.
- A managed API surface with an official-model catalog.
- A clearly stated output-image price on the cited FLUX Pro page.
What to verify
Replicate’s catalog changes. Confirm the exact FLUX revision, price, output dimensions, latency behavior and commercial-use terms at implementation time. The official-model documentation also lists an Ideogram v3 Turbo model identifier; that establishes marketplace access, not a direct Ideogram API relationship.
5. Adobe Firefly API
Firefly is the practical choice when image generation must sit inside an Adobe creative workflow, with enterprise controls and handoff to established creative tools. Adobe’s API documentation also covers image upscaling.

Evaluation questions
- Will designers continue finishing assets in Adobe applications?
- Do procurement and governance already approve Adobe’s enterprise environment?
- Are the current quotas, model availability and commercial terms acceptable for your region and workload?
Confirm those details directly in Adobe’s current documentation before making a purchasing commitment; the supplied material does not establish a single public per-image price.
6. Ideogram via Replicate
Ideogram is visible in Replicate’s official-model catalog, so it is a reasonable experiment for teams interested in that model family without building a separate hosting layer. The catalog listing alone does not prove a direct Ideogram API partnership, affiliate arrangement or a fixed price. Treat the Replicate model page as the source of truth for identifier, inputs, outputs and billing.
7. Leonardo AI
Leonardo is a name worth investigating for creative teams, but the available material does not establish authoritative API documentation, current limits, model IDs or pricing. Do not put it on a production shortlist until you can verify authentication, generation and editing endpoints, commercial rights, rate limits, data retention and support commitments from current primary documentation.
8. Amazon Bedrock
Bedrock is a sensible lead for organizations that require AWS billing, IAM and regional controls. However, a current Bedrock image-generation endpoint is not established here. Verify which image model is available in your target region, how requests are billed, what safety controls apply and whether image editing is supported before treating Bedrock as an implementation choice.
Testing an API before production
Build a small, repeatable prompt set
- Write ten prompts covering portraits, products, scenes, diagrams and long text labels.
- For editing, provide the same source image and three instructions: object removal, style transfer and precise replacement.
- Request at least one square and one portrait output where the provider supports both.
- Score prompt adherence, anatomy or object integrity, typography, composition, edit fidelity, latency and failure behavior separately.
Measure the whole request lifecycle
Record queue time, generation time, download time, HTTP status, provider request ID, billed unit and whether a retry produced a different result. A visually strong model can still be a poor fit if it times out under your concurrency pattern or makes cost accounting impossible.

- 60 hand-drawn cards - Original pen-and-ink illustrations exploring shadow, pattern, and perception.
- 132-page companion booklet - Brief, open-ended reflections for each card.
- Made as a creative and reflective tool - Useful for journaling, self-directed spreads, or any practice that benefits from symbolic prompts.
- Independent artwork - Entirely hand-drawn with no AI or digital rendering beyond basic contrast adjustments for print clarity.
- Printed for durability - Cards use 330gsm stock with a protective gloss finish.
Handle safety and rights explicitly
Read each provider’s current safety, commercial-use, training-data and retention terms. Keep user prompts and uploaded references isolated by tenant, remove secrets from logs, and require moderation or human review for public-facing content.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common integration failures
Unexpected cost
Cause: token usage, quality, image size, reference inputs or retries were omitted from the estimate. Fix: log usage per request and calculate cost from the provider’s current billing unit.
Retired or unavailable model
Cause: a model ID reached its shutdown date or is unavailable in a region. Fix: centralize model configuration, monitor lifecycle notices and keep a tested replacement.
Rate-limit errors
Cause: bursts exceed the provider’s limit, such as Stability’s documented 150 requests per 10 seconds. Fix: use a queue, cap concurrency, honor retry headers when supplied and apply exponential backoff with jitter.
Unreadable text in the image
Cause: the model treated lettering as visual texture. Fix: shorten the text, specify exact capitalization and layout, generate the background first, then render critical text with a deterministic design tool when accuracy is mandatory.
Best Value
Edits change unrelated details
Cause: the edit operation gives the model too much freedom. Fix: use a mask or control input where supported, describe what must remain unchanged, and compare the result against the source with an automated image-difference check.

If your actual requirement is a screenshot of a live website rather than generated artwork, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first. It accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
One GET request is enough:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the full parameter list and signed-link, PDF, async-job and MCP instructions in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Frequently Asked Questions
Which image API is cheapest?
There is no universal answer because OpenAI bills tokens, Stability bills credits and Replicate lists a per-output-image price. Compare the same prompt, size, quality and retry rate using each provider’s current meter.
Which API is best for editing an existing image?
OpenAI documents image inputs through its Images and Responses APIs, while Stability documents editing and control workflows. Test both with your own source images and masks because edit fidelity is task-specific.
Should I build on Google Imagen in 2026?
Only with a migration plan: Google documents Imagen 4 endpoint shutdowns for August 17, 2026. Confirm the replacement Gemini model, regional availability and pricing before production launch.
Can I use ScreenshotNeo to generate AI artwork?
No. ScreenshotNeo captures live webpages as images or PDFs. It is useful when your requirement is a clean website screenshot, not synthetic image generation.
