AI deep research is a multistep workflow in which an AI system searches sources, reads relevant material, synthesizes findings, and returns a structured answer or report with citations or source links. It can help organize a complex investigation, but a cited report is not automatically complete or correct: check its evidence before relying on or sharing it.

What AI deep research means

“Deep research” is used for AI features and workflows that go beyond answering from a single prompt: they plan or conduct multiple search and reading steps, then synthesize material into a report. OpenAI describes its ChatGPT feature as multistep internet research for complex tasks; Google describes its Deep Research agent as planning, searching, reading, and writing; and Microsoft describes Researcher as producing a structured, source-cited report. These are descriptions of the vendors’ products, not independent evidence that their reports are accurate or exhaustive. OpenAI’s current ChatGPT help, Google’s API documentation, and Microsoft’s Researcher guide explain their respective workflows.

The useful distinction is between a research process and a polished-looking answer. An AI system may find and summarize relevant pages, but the user still needs to decide what question matters, whether the sources fit, and whether each claim is supported. Treat citations as a trail to inspect—not as a quality seal.

How to use AI to research a topic

  1. Define the decision and deliverable

State the question you need answered, who will use the result, and what form it should take: for example, a concise briefing, a comparison table, or a list of unresolved questions. Say what time period matters and what would count as useful evidence. For a comparison, name the dimensions you want assessed instead of asking which option is “best.”

  2. Set the source boundaries

Specify whether the system may use the public web, files you provide, workplace material, connected applications, or only particular domains. Tell it what to exclude when that matters, such as outdated guidance or promotional material. A tool’s ability to access connected sources depends on the product, account, permissions, plan, region, and administrator settings; naming a source in a prompt does not grant access to it.

  3. Provide context that changes the answer

Supply definitions, constraints, background documents, and the audience’s relevant assumptions. For example, a policy comparison may need a jurisdiction and effective date; a technical decision may need the existing stack and operating constraints. OpenAI documents support for uploaded files and certain connected sources in ChatGPT, as well as API workflows involving vector stores and MCP search/fetch integrations. The available path depends on the specific product and configuration. See ChatGPT’s source and access guidance and the OpenAI API deep research guide.

  4. Ask for an evidence-led investigation

Use a prompt that makes scope and output testable. For example:

Compare [A] and [B] for [audience and use case]. Use sources published or updated since [date], prioritize primary documentation, and distinguish official product statements from independent findings. Compare [dimensions]. Include links next to claims, identify disagreements and evidence gaps, and finish with a recommendation conditional on [constraints]. Return a table followed by a short explanation.

If the product asks clarifying questions, answer them before the research proceeds. Microsoft says Researcher can include an optional clarification step and recommends specifying the request and scope in its Researcher instructions.

  5. Check claims against the cited material

Open the cited page and check that it supports the exact claim, not merely the general subject. Verify dates, geography, edition, eligibility, and whether the page is a vendor description, a rule, an original study, or commentary. When a report compares products, check that comparable evidence is being compared: a feature listed in one vendor’s documentation does not establish that it performs better than a competitor’s feature.

  6. Revise for the actual use

Ask the system to address a specific gap: explain a disagreement between sources, add a missing stakeholder perspective, or reorganize the report for its reader. Then edit the result yourself before sharing it. Export, sharing, and revision options vary by product and account.

Choosing an AI research tool

Pick the tool whose source access and workflow fit your task. Official product documentation establishes what each vendor says its product supports; it does not provide a controlled head-to-head study of accuracy, completeness, or overall quality. The descriptions below are based on documentation reviewed on September 29, 2026, and availability can depend on account and workspace conditions.

Tool What its documentation describes Check before choosing
ChatGPT Deep Research Public web and uploaded files by default, with supported connected sources subject to account and workspace conditions; reports include citations or source links. OpenAI Help Center. Are the connected sources you need supported and authorized? Can you review and export the result in a suitable form?
Gemini Deep Research The API documentation lists Google Search, URL Context, and Code Execution as default tools when no tools parameter is supplied, and describes long-running, multistep tasks. Google AI for Developers. Does the API tool set fit your application, and can your integration handle an asynchronous, long-running task?
Claude Research Anthropic says web search is required and Research can work across the web and connected internal context, including supported Google services. Anthropic Help Center. Is web search enabled, and are the connectors you need available and authorized?
Microsoft Copilot Researcher Microsoft describes a structured, cited report using web and accessible work content. Its support page says the former Deep Research experience has been retired and Researcher is now the in-depth experience for eligible subscriptions. Microsoft Support. Is Researcher available with your subscription and administrator settings? Does its access to work content match your task?

Google also documents a Gemini Deep Research Agent offering in its Cloud agent platform; that page labels the offering Preview and subject to pre-GA terms. That is a distinct availability qualification from the Gemini API documentation above. Check the Cloud documentation for its current status before building around it.

Across these products, compare source coverage, permission boundaries, how much control you have over scope, citation traceability, access to private material, output and sharing options, and account or workspace availability. Do not infer a winner for accuracy or time saved from product descriptions alone.

How to verify AI research citations

Review the important claims, not just a sample of links. A report can cite real pages and still overstate what they establish, combine facts from different dates, or omit a source that changes the conclusion.

  • Open the cited source. Confirm it loads and contains the passage or data the report attributes to it.
  • Match the claim’s scope. Check that dates, geography, product edition, population, and conditions in the source match the report’s wording.
  • Identify the source type. A vendor’s feature page establishes what the vendor says it offers; it is not an independent performance assessment. Distinguish primary documentation, regulations, original research, and secondary reporting.
  • Check consequential facts in more than one place. For decisions with financial, legal, safety, or operational consequences, seek an authoritative source or independent corroboration rather than relying on one generated report.
  • Inspect missing and opposing evidence. Ask what relevant source, counterexample, date, or perspective could change the conclusion. A citation list does not prove the search covered every relevant view.
  • Keep the trail with the report. Preserve source links and note when the information was checked, especially for facts that can change.

OpenAI explicitly advises users to check citations before using or sharing a delivered report. Its current guidance is at Deep research in ChatGPT. The general principle applies regardless of which research assistant produced the document: the cited page, not the citation’s presence, is what supports a claim.

Capture a web page as supporting evidence

A screenshot can preserve how a web page appeared at a particular capture, which may help document a visual layout or page state alongside the original URL. It is not a substitute for reading the source, checking its date, or confirming a factual claim. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not an AI research or source-verification system. Its API can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF captures; options include full-page capture, custom wait conditions, and cookies or headers. Details are in the ScreenshotNeo overview.

Or skip the browser setup

Make one GET request (replace the URL with the page you want to capture):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request details. Before capture, ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. These capture functions can support a research workflow, but they do not establish the truth of a page’s claims. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card.

Common failure modes and fixes

  • The report answers a broad or different question. Narrow the prompt to a decision, audience, time period, and deliverable; ask for clarifying questions if the tool offers them.
  • A connected document or work source is missing. Check that the integration is supported, connected, permitted for your account, and allowed by workspace or administrator settings. If access is unavailable, provide an authorized document or use a source the tool can access.
  • A citation does not support the sentence. Rewrite or remove the claim, find a better source, or ask the system to distinguish direct evidence from inference. Do not keep a claim merely because it has a link beside it.
  • Sources conflict or are out of date. Compare their publication and effective dates, scope, and authority; state the disagreement rather than flattening it into a single answer.
  • An API research task takes longer than a normal request. Google describes Deep Research API tasks as long-running. Design the integration to handle the documented task lifecycle instead of assuming an immediate synchronous response; see Google’s API guide.
  • The report is polished but thin on evidence. Request source links next to material claims, ask for unresolved disagreements and missing perspectives, then verify the sources yourself before using the result.

Use AI research as a draft, not the final authority

AI deep research is most useful when the question is scoped, source access is explicit, and citations are checked claim by claim. Choose a tool based on the sources and permissions your work actually requires; vendor documentation alone does not establish which system is most accurate. The final judgment—and responsibility for how the report is used—remains with the reader.
