To deliver a website screenshot, capture the rendered page at the viewport and page scope you need, save the image somewhere your destination can load it, then embed it with responsive sizing and a useful accessible name. Use a viewport capture for what a visitor initially sees, a full-page capture for the whole document, and an element capture for a specific component. For automated workflows, browser automation such as Playwright gives you control over the browser; a hosted screenshot API can return an image without requiring you to run browser workers.
Choose what the screenshot needs to show
Decide the capture scope before writing code. A screenshot is an image of a rendered browser page, so the browser viewport, page state and timing all affect the result.
Viewport capture
A viewport capture records the visible browser area at a particular width and height. Choose these dimensions to match the display context you care about. A mobile-width viewport can trigger a different responsive layout than a desktop-width one; it is not simply a smaller copy of the desktop image. Playwright documents screenshot capture modes at its screenshots documentation.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFull-page capture
Use a full-page capture when the entire document matters, such as for a release record or a page review. It can produce a very tall image, which may be awkward to read when embedded at normal content width. Consider whether a viewport image or a series of focused captures would serve the reader better.

Element capture
Capture a particular element when the subject is a panel, card, chart or other bounded component. This avoids including unrelated parts of the page. The element must exist and be visible when capture runs; for content that appears after interaction or loading, wait for it first.
Capture a website screenshot with Playwright
Playwright is a practical do-it-yourself option when you already use browser automation or want to control page navigation and capture in your own process. Its screenshot documentation covers viewport, full-page and element captures. The following Node.js example uses Playwright’s Chromium browser and writes a PNG file locally.
- Install Node.js, then create a project and install Playwright:
npm init -yandnpm install playwright. - Save the script below as
capture.mjs. - Run it with
node capture.mjs. It writeswebsite.pngin the current directory.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 1000 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
const response = await page.goto('https://example.com', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle',
timeout: 60000
});
if (!response || !response.ok()) {
throw new Error(`Page navigation failed: ${response?.status() ?? 'no response'}`);
}
await page.screenshot({ path: 'website.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Replace https://example.com with the page you are permitted to capture. The example waits for network activity to settle before taking a full-page screenshot. Some sites keep connections open or load content later, so that condition may time out or may not mean every image or widget is ready. In those cases, use a bounded wait for a specific selector or a short deliberate delay after navigation instead of waiting indefinitely.

- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
const card = page.locator('[data-testid="product-card"]');
await card.waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 15000 });
await card.screenshot({ path: 'product-card.png' });
Change the selector to one that uniquely identifies the element on your page. Waiting for visibility is useful when the component appears asynchronously; a missing or ambiguous selector should be fixed rather than hidden by taking a screenshot of the wrong content.
Make the rendering intentional
- Viewport and device scale: Set width and height for the target layout. A higher device scale factor can produce more pixels for sharper displays, but also increases image dimensions.
- Page state: If the screenshot must show a particular tab, menu or consent state, perform the needed interaction before capture.
- Fonts and images: If an image or font has not loaded, the capture can differ from the intended final page. Wait for the relevant selector or asset condition where possible.
- Long documents: Full-page capture may require additional time and memory, especially on pages with extensive content or lazy-loaded images.
For screenshot API implementations, controls are provider-specific. Cloudflare documents URL or HTML input, viewport settings, full-page and selector capture, and navigation wait options in its screenshot endpoint documentation. Screenshots.dev documents URL or HTML capture, dimensions, full-page mode and image formats in its API documentation. Check current provider documentation for its actual request fields, authentication and response format rather than assuming these are universal.
Deliver the image to its destination
A locally saved file is useful for a report or a documentation build, but a web page can only display an image that it can load. Put the image in the destination site’s static assets or another approved location, then use its publicly reachable URL or a path served by that site. If you generate screenshots dynamically, decide whether the consumer should receive binary image data, a stored image URL, or a temporary signed URL; those are different delivery patterns, and provider behavior varies.
For a release record, bug report or preview, retain enough context to interpret the image: the page or component, viewport or device context, whether it is full-page or viewport, and capture date when that matters. This helps distinguish a rendering change from a different capture setup.

Embed a screenshot accessibly and responsively
Use an ordinary HTML image element for an image file. Give it alternative text that describes what the image conveys, not just the fact that it is a screenshot. Keep it within the content column and preserve its aspect ratio so it does not stretch:
<img
src="/images/pricing-page-desktop.png"
alt="Pricing page showing three subscription tiers and their monthly prices"
style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"
>
Replace the example source with the path or URL you actually publish, and write alt text that matches the image. If the screenshot is purely decorative or repeats nearby information, follow the accessibility implementation used by your site for that case rather than adding redundant wording.
Do not use an image so small that its text becomes unreadable. For a large full-page capture, consider linking to the original-size image or splitting the documentation into smaller focused captures. If the screenshot itself is linked, make the link’s purpose clear to users.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWeb app manifest screenshots are a separate feature
A screenshot listed in a web app manifest is not the same thing as an HTML image embedded in a page. MDN describes the manifest screenshot object’s descriptive label and notes that the property is optional and app stores may not display supplied images. That label does not replace HTML image alternative text. See MDN’s manifest screenshots reference when preparing manifest entries.

Browser automation or a hosted screenshot API?
Use browser automation when the capture belongs inside an existing test or browser workflow, or when you need to operate the page directly. A hosted screenshot API can be a better fit when a product or report needs URL-to-image generation but you do not want to operate browser workers yourself. Cloudflare lists previews, dashboards, reports, automated QA and visual regression among screenshot endpoint use cases; see its endpoint documentation. Other services document different capabilities, including AddScreenshots and its API documentation.
Before choosing a hosted service, compare the specific requirements your workflow has. Verify dynamic-page rendering and readiness controls, viewport and capture scope, authentication and cookies, output formats, whether you get bytes or a hosted URL, storage and retention, privacy, quotas and reliability. These are comparison questions, not capabilities guaranteed by every provider; check each one’s current official documentation.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A GET request with a URL returns an image or PDF. The following cURL example saves a WebP image:

Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and the example URL with the page to capture. Review the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters and response handling. It can accept cookie/consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts and failed loads are not billed, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
Troubleshoot common capture and embedding failures
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: The page may not have rendered the target content before capture. Check navigation errors and wait for a meaningful selector or for the relevant content to appear.
- The page never becomes idle: Analytics, chat or other long-lived requests can keep network activity going. Replace a network-idle wait with a visible-selector wait or a bounded delay suited to the page.
- The element screenshot fails: Confirm the selector matches an element, that it is visible, and that it is not inside a frame requiring separate handling.
- The mobile screenshot looks like desktop: Set the viewport dimensions to a mobile width before navigation or capture. The responsive layout follows the viewport, not the image’s later display size.
- The embedded image is broken: Check that the published path or URL resolves from the page, that the file is actually deployed, and that the destination is allowed to load it.
- The image is distorted or unreadable: Preserve its aspect ratio with automatic height and sufficient display width. For tall captures, provide a way to inspect the original-size image or use smaller captures.
- A hosted API response is not an image: Inspect that provider’s documented status, headers and error response instead of saving every response body as an image. Authentication, input validation and capture failures differ by service.
Performance, reliability and cost considerations
Captures consume browser time and resources, with full-page images and large viewports generally requiring more work than a small component capture. Keep readiness waits bounded, reuse browser setup when operating an automated worker, and avoid capturing more content than the destination needs. For repeated URLs, decide whether caching is acceptable: cached results can be faster, but may not reflect the latest page state.

For any production workflow, define what happens when navigation times out, a site blocks automation, or an image cannot be stored or delivered. A screenshot is a point-in-time rendering, not proof that every visitor sees the same content. Dynamic personalization, authentication, geolocation and changing data can alter what appears. For hosted APIs, check current limits, retention, privacy terms and prices directly; those details can change and differ between providers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a screenshot in a web app manifest replace an image in the page?
No. A manifest screenshot is metadata used by supporting app-store experiences; it is distinct from an HTML image element displayed in page content.
Recommended Free Tools
Should screenshot alt text include the word “screenshot”?
Only if that helps explain the image in context. Prefer describing the meaningful content shown, such as the page section or state, rather than naming the image format alone.
