The simplest way to capture your desktop in Python is Pillow’s ImageGrab.grab(): call it, then save the returned image. Pass a bbox tuple when you need only a rectangular region. The exact dependencies, pixel dimensions and color mode vary by operating system and desktop session.
Capture the entire desktop with Pillow
Install Pillow in your project’s usual environment, then use the documented ImageGrab API:
from PIL import ImageGrab
image = ImageGrab.grab()
image.save("desktop.png")
grab() returns an image object. Saving it with a .png extension preserves a lossless screenshot suitable for later processing. These examples follow the documented API; capture support still depends on your operating system, Python build and active display session.
Capture a rectangular region
Use bbox=(left, top, right, bottom), where the coordinates describe the rectangle’s outer edges:

Choose between Pillow and PyAutoGUI
| Approach | Best fit | Capture behavior | Important notes |
|---|---|---|---|
Pillow ImageGrab.grab() |
A focused screenshot or image-processing script | Full screen by default; rectangular bbox; documented window capture on Windows (HWND) and macOS (CGWindowID); all_screens is documented for Windows |
Pixel dimensions and native display support vary by platform |
PyAutoGUI screenshot() |
A script that also controls the mouse or keyboard | Returns a Pillow image and saves it when given a filename | Its Linux screenshot guide documents scrot as a prerequisite |
If your program already uses desktop automation, PyAutoGUI’s compact form is:
import pyautogui
image = pyautogui.screenshot("desktop.png")
PyAutoGUI documentation gives a rough example of about 100 milliseconds for a screenshot on a 1920 × 1080 screen. That is a documentation example, not a performance guarantee for your hardware, operating system or package version.

Platform details that affect the result
macOS Retina displays
Pillow documents that Retina capture can produce pixels at twice the display’s nominal dimensions. If you need 1× sizing, its API documents scale_down=True. Pillow also reports RGBA pixels on macOS, while the returned image is RGB on other platforms according to the current reference:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
from PIL import ImageGrab
image = ImageGrab.grab(scale_down=True)
image.save("desktop-1x.png")
Check the actual image size and mode before handing the file to code that assumes RGB or a particular resolution.

Windows
The Pillow reference documents an all_screens option for Windows and window capture using an HWND. Whether a particular window or display arrangement is capturable can still depend on permissions and the active desktop session.
Linux and Unix-like desktops
Pillow describes X11 capture and fallback to gnome-screenshot, grim or spectacle when the default X11 display cannot provide a snapshot, if those utilities are installed. PyAutoGUI’s guide documents scrot for its screenshot features. Requirements differ among Pillow and PyAutoGUI versions, X11 versus Wayland sessions, and desktop environments, so check the current Pillow reference and PyAutoGUI screenshot guide for the versions installed in your environment.

Make failures easier to diagnose
- Import error: confirm Pillow or PyAutoGUI is installed in the same virtual environment that runs the script.
- Display or utility error: verify that the process has access to a graphical session and install the fallback utility named by your package’s current documentation when appropriate.
- Unexpected size: inspect
image.size; Retina scaling and multi-monitor layouts can change dimensions. - Unexpected colors: inspect
image.mode; Pillow documents RGBA on macOS and RGB elsewhere for this API. - Blank or incomplete capture: test the same code in the target desktop session rather than assuming behavior from another operating system.
print(image.size, image.mode)
The Python GUI FAQ explains that standard Python builds include tkinter and that Tcl/Tk is portable across macOS, Windows and Unix, but tkinter is not itself a general desktop screenshot API. See the Python GUI FAQ for that context.
