AggregatorHost.exe (also shown as Aggregator Host.exe) is normally a Windows component when the file is located at C:WindowsSystem32AggregatorHost.exe and carries a valid Microsoft signature. The filename alone is not proof of safety: malware has used the same name from temporary and user-writable folders. Check the executable’s location, signature, parent process and security-scan results before deciding what to do.

What the name means

You may see AggregatorHost.exe, Aggregator Host.exe, Aggregatorhost.exe or simply Aggregator Host in Task Manager, Reliability Monitor, Event Viewer or antivirus software. Spacing and capitalization are not security tests: Windows filenames are case-insensitive, and a malicious program can copy the visible name.

Microsoft includes an executable with this name in Windows, but it does not publish a consumer-facing technical description of its precise function. Microsoft Community reports have associated failures involving Aggregator Host.exe and Aggregatorhost.dll with Windows Security, while one response speculated that it could be an internal Defender-related component. That explanation is not formal Microsoft product documentation (Microsoft Community report).

Claims that it definitively handles telemetry, live tiles, taskbar previews, notifications or a particular Windows API subsystem are not established by an authoritative Microsoft description.

Is AggregatorHost.exe a Windows file?

A copy in C:WindowsSystem32 is consistent with the genuine Windows component. A copy in another directory could be legitimate third-party software, a renamed program or malware. Even a System32 path is an indicator rather than an absolute guarantee, because an attacker with sufficient privileges could place a file there.

What you observe How to interpret it
C:WindowsSystem32AggregatorHost.exe Consistent with the Windows component; verify the signature and behavior.
Valid Microsoft digital signature Strong evidence that the file was signed by Microsoft, but still check its path and activity.
File in %TEMP%, %APPDATA%, Downloads, Recycle Bin or a random user folder Suspicious and requires investigation.
Random scheduled task or Startup shortcut launches it Suspicious persistence mechanism.
It creates Microsoft Defender exclusions Highly suspicious.
Brief CPU use during a Windows operation May be benign; observe whether it stops.
Sustained CPU or memory use, unexplained network traffic or repeated crashes Investigate the path, signer, process tree and security logs.
Your antivirus detects it Follow the security product’s quarantine or removal guidance; do not restore it merely because the name looks familiar.

How to check the file location

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Open the Details tab and find AggregatorHost.exe.
  3. Right-click the entry and select Open file location.
  4. Check whether the executable is in C:WindowsSystem32.
  5. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and review Digital Signatures, Details, General, version and copyright information.

Task Manager can show multiple similarly named processes. Check the location of each one. On 64-bit Windows, system-folder redirection can make paths appear differently to 32-bit and 64-bit tools, so compare the actual executable path rather than relying only on a displayed label.

How to verify the Microsoft signature

Using File Properties

  1. Open the executable’s Properties dialog.
  2. Select Digital Signatures and choose the signer.
  3. Click Details.
  4. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer is Microsoft.

A missing or invalid signature, or an unexpected signer, is a warning sign. It is not by itself conclusive proof of malware, so continue with the path, metadata, process-tree and scan checks.

Using PowerShell

Replace the path if Task Manager shows a different location:

Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:WindowsSystem32AggregatorHost.exe"

A genuine Windows copy will normally show a valid signature and a Microsoft signer. Interpret that result together with the file’s location and behavior.

For an incident record or comparison with a trusted reference, collect a SHA-256 hash:

Get-FileHash "C:WindowsSystem32AggregatorHost.exe" -Algorithm SHA256

Do not treat one hash as universal. Windows binaries can differ by edition, build, architecture, language and cumulative-update level.

When the name may be malware

Dr.Web documented a malware sample, Trojan.Siggen29.26640, whose August 21, 2024 entry (description added August 23) used %TEMP%Aggregator Host.exe. The sample created a Run key, Startup shortcut and scheduled task, added Microsoft Defender exclusions, made network connections and used anti-analysis behavior (Dr.Web analysis). This demonstrates why “it has a Windows-sounding name” is not a safety verdict.

  • Unexpected location, especially a user-writable folder.
  • Subtle filename changes, extra characters or unusual spacing.
  • No signature, an invalid signature or an unexpected publisher.
  • Launch by a random scheduled task or Startup entry.
  • PowerShell command lines containing options such as -ExecutionPolicy Bypass.
  • New Defender exclusions, unexplained external connections or repeated relaunch after termination.
  • Security software stops working around the same time.

A clean antivirus result does not prove authenticity; it only means the tested file or behavior was not detected by that scan. Conversely, do not dismiss a detection because the filename resembles a Windows component.

If it uses high CPU, memory or keeps crashing

  1. Confirm the executable path and signature first.
  2. Determine whether the resource use is brief or sustained, and note the Windows edition and build.
  3. Install pending Windows updates and note any recent antivirus or system changes.
  4. Review Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer for matching crashes. A crash entry can reflect a Windows bug, damaged files or security-software interference; it does not prove infection.
  5. Run the Windows image and protected-file repairs below.
  6. Run a full malware scan with Windows Security or another reputable security product.
  7. If the file is legitimate, investigate third-party antivirus conflicts or recent startup changes. A clean boot can help isolate another startup application.
  8. Use Process Explorer for a deeper process-tree and command-line review.

Repair Windows components

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run these commands in order:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

Microsoft documents DISM’s /RestoreHealth option for repairing the Windows image and SFC for scanning protected system files and replacing incorrect versions where possible. Restart if prompted. These tools repair Windows files; they are not complete malware-removal tools and cannot clean persistence created by a third-party program using the same name.

  • Loaded DLLs and handles.
  • Network-related activity.
  • Relationships to Startup items and scheduled tasks.

Ending a process can be a diagnostic action, but it is not a removal method. Do not terminate it solely because the name is unfamiliar.

PowerShell can provide additional triage:

Get-Process AggregatorHost -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
Get-ScheduledTask |
  Where-Object { $_.TaskName -match "Aggregator" } |
  Select-Object TaskName, TaskPath, State

If a matching task exists, record its task name, path, action, executable, author and trigger before taking action. Do not delete tasks blindly; quarantine or remove them through a trusted security workflow.

Should you disable or delete it?

Normally, no. Do not manually delete or rename a copy in C:WindowsSystem32. Removing a legitimate system executable can cause Windows errors, and another component may restore or relaunch it.

If the copy is suspicious, do not launch it, add an antivirus exclusion or use a random “PC repair” uninstaller. Run a full security scan and follow the product’s quarantine and removal instructions. If the computer shows signs of active compromise, disconnect it from the network and change important passwords from a separate trusted device. Deleting only the visible executable may leave behind scheduled tasks, Startup entries, registry Run keys or Defender exclusions, as the Dr.Web case illustrates.

Bottom line

AggregatorHost.exe is normally safe when it is the Microsoft-signed file in C:WindowsSystem32, but the name can be impersonated. Verify the path and signature, then investigate the parent process, persistence, network behavior and scan results before repairing, quarantining or removing anything.
